Dr. Coburn's Statement on Nomination of John Roberts to U.S. Supreme Court

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) today released the following statement regarding President Bush’s nomination of John Roberts to the United States Supreme Court.

“It is imperative that the next Supreme Court justice help restore the Constitutional balance of power between the branches of government and leave legislating to Congress and the states,” Dr. Coburn said.

”Judge Roberts is entitled to a thorough, fair and civil confirmation process. I look forward to the opportunity to interview Judge Roberts and I support the right of Senators to ask any appropriate question. The only litmus test the Senate should consider is Judge Robert’s loyalty to the Constitution and its strict construction,” Dr. Coburn said.



Dr. Coburn Comments on Anti-Meth Bill

(OKLAHOMA CITY) – United States Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) today made the following comments regarding pending federal anti-methamphetamine legislation.

“Unfortunately, in Oklahoma, we know the terrible toll methamphetamines place on our society. I support our state’s efforts to wipe out this problem and I will oppose any federal legislation that will nullify the gains already made by local officials,” Dr. Coburn said.

The bill now before the Senate (S. 103) would preempt the anti-meth laws passed by Oklahoma and other states. Currently, 44 states have either passed some form of legislation restricting access to meth ingredients or are working toward that end.

“Oklahoma and other states have successfully enacted tough anti-meth legislation. We do not need the federal government to step in and impose unproven rules and regulations on our state,” Dr. Coburn said.

Oklahoma Congressmen Tom Cole and Dan Boren have introduced legislation in the House that is patterned after Oklahoma’s successful anti-meth laws.

“It’s my hope the Senate can agree on some form of legislation like that proposed by Congressmen Cole and Boren,” Dr. Coburn said.






Our Troops Need and Deserve our Support July 4th column by U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D.

As Oklahomans prepare to celebrate July 4th, many families have loved ones serving overseas who need our prayers and support. Our mission in Iraq, in particular, is at the forefront of our hearts and minds.

As I was putting my thoughts together about the need to support our military in advance of July 4th I came across a moving and eloquent letter from a young Oklahoman serving in Iraq than is more profound that anything I could say.

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Jesse Young. I was born and raised in Tulsa, graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, attend the University of Oklahoma in Norman, and am currently serving my country as a soldier in the US Army outside of Baghdad, Iraq. I am writing this letter, to you, the American public, during what I feel to be a crucial point in this nation’s War on Terror . . .

Naturally, I cannot currently watch the nightly news in America from my station half the world away, but I am still able to follow politics and current events through the internet, and frankly, what I hear, see, and read scares me.

I am not writing this letter on a political front, and therefore will not begin to proselytize my political leanings during this letter. I will leave that to the politicians battling it out on Capitol Hill. I am writing on behalf of my brothers and sisters in arms, as these are the men and women I serve with daily, and whose work directs me most directly . . .

We are battling a foe who knows no leniency . . . These “freedom fighters” walk into cafes in Baghdad filled with innocent civilians—including women and children—and detonate themselves with suicide vests, killing dozens . . . My real purpose in writing this letter, however, is not to persuade or dissuade anyone’s belief or support of this war . . . I am truly writing this letter as a plea, on behalf of all service members, to the people most important to us: the American public.

Whether or not we agree with this war, we are fighting it. We are putting our lives on the line twenty-four hours a day. We do a job daily that most at home wouldn’t consider. We put our lives in line for a nation that’s never known freedom, for people we’ve never met.

In a war that no one can truly see the end of, the support of all Americans becomes increasingly important, and weighs increasingly heavy on the shoulders of the Americans here fighting it.

Please don’t forget, that while you are at home sleeping in your beds, there are many over here who would love to do the same. Just as you need support, backing, and love from your families and friends in your life, we too need it in ours. The only difference for us is, our family is all Americans.

I believe that all Americans can be very proud of not only our soldiers like Jesse Young, but our overall mission in Iraq. In Iraq, we overthrew a genocidal dictator, freed an entire nation from tyranny and made the world more secure. Iraq is not the front line between America and the Islamic or Arab world; it is the front line between freedom and the tyranny of violent Islamic extremism. We have two choices in Iraq. We can turn tail and run and wait for another 9-11 type attack or we can win and change the future for the Middle East and for future generations of Americans.

Make no mistake, the battle to defeat terrorism will be long and arduous but we cannot lose our resolve. I know families miss their soldiers, especially during this holiday in which we celebrate our freedom. But calling for a timetable for withdrawal would only emboldened the terrorists and strengthen their will to wait us out.

On Independence Day we celebrate our Nation’s victory over tyranny and oppression, but those dark forces are again trying to take root in a fledgling nation and will take root in any nation that chooses appeasement. Like our founding fathers, our brave men and women in uniform again have taken up the fight to protect freedom and, with the American people’s support, we will succeed.

Inhofe is sort of a putz. He is trying to have love field in Dallas shut down so that American Airlines won't have competition from Southwest. I just can't see Coburn doing that sort of thing.

He is correct. On another thread, another Senator had a different opinion about litmus tests, although she was not courageous enough to identify it as such! Instead, she hides behind the false premise promoted by her Far Left colleagues that the only candidates to be feared are those who might have what they call "pre-existing" notions as to how they will decide cases (as if the only candidates who might have such notions are those appointed by Republican Presidents).

Here's what she said:

"'Unfortunately, the people who are being appointed to the courts all too often have a pre-existing idea of what they're going to decide,' she complains." If they are scholars of the Founders' Constitution, why wouldn't they, one might ask.

Clinton's remark exposes the illogical, tyrannical, and hypocritical mindset of Hillary and her Far Left associates. Such a blunt admission relies on what they believe to be the ignorance of citizens, else why would she risk such exposure of the Far Left's agenda?

If her remark is intended to discredit the current President's potential choice of nominee, then is she saying that the two appointees of her husband had no such 'pre-existing idea' on key issues?

Or, is it more likely she is saying, "the people who are being appointed to the courts all too often have a pre-existing idea of what they're going to decide that differs with what I and my ideologues demand!"????

In other words, the Far Left has set up a litmus test that totally excludes, censors, and bans from consideration for the Court any person whose judicial decisions on certain specified issues chosen by the Far Left might be perceived to differ from the agenda they, not the Founders' Constitution, have pursued and are intent upon imposing, regardless of its sound basis in the Constitution's principles.

Perhaps the Senator never quite understood the thrust of the Founders' total ban of government's power to intrude upon the rights of conscience of each citizen, including those in positions of executive, judicial, or legislative power in the government!

More likely, however, it is that having read Jefferson and Madison and others, Senator Clinton and her ilk have chosen to part ways with the Framers of the Declaration of Independence/Constitution's foundations in Creator-endowed, unalienable rights in order to impose another idea that relies on the judiciary's "creation" of government-granted (therefore, alienable) "rights."

The history of civilization demonstrates that the latter is a counterfeit idea that leads only to domination and power for the political elite, and oppression and tyranny for the people!

New Meaning to 'Pro-American'

Southwest Airlines (search) is planning more direct flights out of its home base at Love Field in Dallas. But the popular carrier may be forced to close up shop there if Senator James Inhofe (search) gets his way.

The Oklahoma Republican wants to end commercial flights at Love Field, moving all the traffic to the larger, more modern Dallas-Fort Worth airport outside the city — despite complaints about the airport's layout.

Inhofe says the bill will protect DFW-based American Airlines, which employs thousands in his home state. A spokesman for Southwest calls the proposal a "scare tactic."
