Let me explain a little game theory to you - the police had basically two high-risk scenarios. One, the guy was suicide bomber and not doing anything would have resulted in the deaths of a number of people. Two the guy wasn't a suicide bomber but through sheer coincidence was behaving like one - one guy dies but others are saved. If you only have a few seconds to decide what course of action do you take?
Give due consideration to the fact that if you choose course one, whiners (probably many of the same screen names as we see here) will complain about your incompetance even given the same set of observations that led to the incident.
But didn't they have more than a split second? They said they followed him to the station, from a "suspicious" apartment complex. Why isn't anyone pissed that, if he was truly a suspect, they let him get down into the subway?!
...it will be far too late for the young man from Brazil.
Yeah, I'd like to know who that guy was.. was he a Pakistani Brazilian ??
Yahoo listed the London low yesterday at 60 F when I checked yesterday, today's intellicast.com archive lists the low temp @ 2AM at 55 F but greater than 60 F from 8 AM forward with a high of 70 F with a 3 kph wind and broken clouds.
Why would one be wearing a heavy coat in those temps with no wind? Convince me he was he doing a BO test on his deoderant perhaps?
thanks for the info.. so he was innocent afterall.. lucky him.. he is of my age and got off this goddamn planet so quickly.. May his soul rest in peace.
It is sad the Brazilian guy died, but he ran from the cops. What did he expect, a hug?
Sad, but at the time, it seemed like the only thing that could be done.
Hope so. Shooting innocent people to death isn't a desirable outcome, unless you believe in Nazi, Communist or maybe Islamfascist police action.
So that gives the cops a license to shoot someone to death? All this police-state advocacy of some militant freepers will turn round and bite you in the butt if Hillary even becomes president. The traditional democratic belief in limited government - including restraint by police - is based on the justifiable understanding that the government, and the police, won't always be in the hands of people we support or agree with.
you know guys, the moment I heard he is of my age, a sudden chill ran down my spine.. I'm not sentimental or stuff, and I never even seen any brazilian folks till now, but somethings got to do with this guy.. am just a bit freaked out I guess.
You bet the cops had the right to shoot him. It's not simply that he ran. You're purposely over-simplfying the issue.
1. He was seen coming from a suspected terrorist safe house that was under surveillance.
2. He was wearing a thick winter jacket. Pretty unusual for 75 degree weather.
3. When the cops told him to stop, he ran.
4. When he ran, he ran for the subway and jumped a turnstile, during a terrorist alert, mind you. The bombings of 7/7 were still very fresh in everybody's mind. He didn't run for an alley or a crowd of people to mix in with, he ran for the subway.
That's a lot of strikes against a guy. Any one of those things may not have been a big thing but this guy did nothing to break the error chain. After a recent terror attack and the law on alert, that's not a time to go test the system to see how far you can push it. If he would have given himself up, it all would've been over. The cops did the right thing and I have no sympathy for the guy. He did everything he could to get shot. It must have been a suicide thing, probably an al Qaeda suicide ploy to buy some breathing room for the existing terror cells. If he wasn't a terrorist, what was he doing hanging out at a safe-house full of suspects?
What are you twelve and in macho fantasyland? Police officers don't excute people for running.
That depends on the circumstances.
Let's look at the scenario.
A major metropolitan city is being targeted for mass casualty suicide bombings by Arab individuals. A few dozen citizens died less than a week ago in such a bombing. An individual that looks Arab and is wearing bulky clothing runs from the Police into the subway packed with innocent citizens and is chased down by a cop.
Now, put yourself in the cop's place.
You have two "Mississippis" to make the right choice.
If this man who was running away in a very suspicious manner is a terrorist, you will die in the next 2 seconds along with a few dozen citizens when he detonates his bomb vest.
What do you do?
One Mississippi. Two Mississippi...........
The cop made his choice. He made sure that he did not have the chance to detonate the bomb vest he may have had.
The cop may have been wrong but he could very easily have been right.
Soldiers don't usually shoot drivers for speeding. However, under certain circumstances, as with the Italian agents speeding towards a U.S. military checkpoint in Iraq, speeding will get you shot.
If you are going to act extremely stupidly in the subway, don't do it a couple of days after a mass casualty subway terrorist bombing.
A cop, given the choice between the potential deaths of dozens of innocent citizens along with his own death and the death of an idiot will choose the death of the idiot every time.
Excellent post (453). It needs to be stressed that it is now reported that this man was fluent in English. So all the hero-bashers can drop the line of attack that the poor soul had no idea to stop, being a humble Brazilian and all.
Yeah, that's the ticket. A comedian as role model. Go for it!
So you believe every word of a vague America-hating media report over the people who are actually fighting terrorism? Are you still clinging to the "me no speaky English" defense too? If your logic holds, why weren't there mass executions of dark innocents in jackets this or bacpacks this weekend in London? Why over-simplify this?
Why stop at men ? women covered with Hijabs have been an effective suicide weapon in Israel.. so, lets make all human beings -both euro and non- a legitimate target ;)
The cops themselves now say he wasn't guilty of anything. But you say they had a "right" to execute him. Seig Heil.
