Feds bust girl-smuggling ring in Jersey

An international ring smuggled girls as young as 14 into the U.S. from Honduras and forced them to work as virtual slaves in New Jersey bars - and endure brutal beatings if they protested, authorities said yesterday.

Some of the girls were raped by smugglers and those who became pregnant were forced to take abortion drugs so they could stay on the job, prosecutors said.

"This was inhumane and sadistic treatment of young women who were kept as virtual slaves," said Newark U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie. "These are among the most vile crimes I've seen."

The alleged ringleader, Luisa Medrano, 50, of Cliffside Park, N.J., and nine other suspects, some in Honduras, were charged yesterday with alien smuggling and other crimes that could get them up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

An indictment handed up in Newark alleged smugglers promised the victims jobs as waitresses - but instead forced them to drink and dance with customers at Medrano's three Hudson County bars.

The women were paid $240 for working up to seven days a week - but nearly all the money went to the smuggling ring, which charged $10,000 to $20,000 to bring them to the U.S.

Christie said girls who objected were treated brutally. "One 15-year-old was beaten so badly blood vessels were broken in her eyes and a 14-year-old was beaten with a belt that raised welts all over her body," he said.

He said 10 young women were victimized from mid-2003 until January, when the ring was smashed. But at least 20 others are believed to have been enslaved. The probe is continuing. The victims already identified and located are now under federal protection and getting counseling and schooling, Christie said. He said they're eligible to seek visas to remain legally in the U.S.

There's a swimming pool in Seattle they might want to rent out after the Muslim women are through using it. (unresistable sarcasm)

They knew they were entering the US illegally. Some may have been abused but they are still criminals. Send them home.

I agree, they all should be sent back home. They were willing to break our laws for their own benefit - they are criminals. What is so adorable or noble about them that we would want to keep them in this country? We have enough people and we certainly already have enough criminals.

Please allow me to be the first to apologize to these gentlemen for being insensitive to their beliefs. Unfortunately most Americans, unlike myself, aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate the rich cultural benefits you bring to our backwards country with rape, prostitution and abortion. For that, I'm sorry. From now on, I will attempt to appreciate your beliefs and practices even though many of my fellow Americans aren't as progressive as I am.

I know you were being sarcastic.

Frankly America has enough of its own existing to home grown backward culture of dysfunctional citizens, legal or illegal thanks in large part to the abuse of recreational drugs, specifically meth users. People need to stop using the term "recreational(fun and relaxing))", there's nothing recreational about volunteerly mutilating ones own brain the same way mad cow disease attacks the brain leaving permanent holes in it and emotionally/physically scarring innocent children who have meth parents.

In the DC area the gangs are growing and have spread into small Virginia towns, terrorizing people.

We need to protect our borders, and anyone who disagrees is either psychotic, out to harm this country, and/or paid off.

" In the DC area the gangs are growing and have spread into small Virginia towns, terrorizing people. "

In our area the last five years, many of us citizens didn't know what hit us until we learned through "communicating" with each other that the serious problem was rampant meth abuse. We were literally terrorized weekly until everyone shut them out. Shut them out, don't do business with them and they will leave. Communication among honest hard working citizens who are Pro-America is key to solving problems. Silence divides and conquers. People fear that which they do not know.

....Get used to it, the southern boarder is wide open, and what is the routine in the third world will soon be so here. .....

You are so right. Perhaps you also saw a Primetime or whatever about this slavery. It showed how girls from Russia and Eastern Europe and all over the world for that matter would be shipped to Mexico prior to being shipped to the U.S.A. They even a have a certain town in Mexico where the girls are broken in. Then they are, what seemed relatively easily, driven in cars across the Mexico/U.S. border and taken to cities even as far flung as New York City.

There was one Russian girl who had her wits about her and tricked her pimp. She and other girls were given strict orders to just say something like, "Si" if the border people asked them anything. But this girl knew it was her last chance to be that close to an authority and the first chance she got she began talking like crazy in Russian. That is the only thing that raised a red flag and thankfully the border official did get them out of the car and she got her freedom and the pimp was put in prison. He had done this so much.

I believe the girl is now living in California as a real estate person or something. I'm not completely sure about that. I don't get that. Maybe the circumstances make her eligible to stay.

But I was struck at how easy it is for people to not only get past the border in vehicles through the check points but to bring slaves across, too. They were not crossing via the desert on foot. Imagine multiplying these girls by the thousands.

>> You don't have to wait. You can enjoy this phenomenon in LA today.

I am talking about heavily armed groups that take over city blocks, rape, pillage and burn, while others hold a line and fight large scale gun battles with the police.

Happens in Rio all the time.

In the NJ court, they will be viewed as emancipated adults. 16 years of age is minimum but the court has discretion to grant emancipation early by form of special petition.

These young ladies have suffered enough to earn their right to stay here. They came here because they had nothing back there.

It's far more widespread than you'd think. Between the MS-13 and the 18th Street gangs--both predominantly Latin American illegals-- there are approximately 30-35,000 members in the States. They're on the West Coast; they're in the Midwest; they're on the Eastern Seaboard. If they continue to make it across the border, these two will rival and surpass the Albanian crime syndicates and possibly knock al-Qaeda from the top of the domestic threat list.

"How remote an incident is this?"

Not remote at all. In CT... most (70%) new "strippers" in Strip Joints are recently smuggled in from Eastern Euro-Peon countries.
