DeLays' Chief of Staff Bags (PETA) Award for Being Nice to Mice

Washington —PETA has sent U.S. Rep. Tom Delay’s chief of staff, Tim Berry, an overnight express package, which—while it might not make a blip on the radar screens of Capitol Hill watchdogs—will help him in his quest not to hurt or kill two mice who have taken up residence in the House majority leader’s Capitol Hill office. According to an article in the Capitol Hill magazine Roll Call last week, Mr. Berry gave the order that the animals "are not to be harmed in any way," inspiring PETA to dispatch a "thank you" card to him for his compassion, along with some state-of-the-art humane mousetraps that he can use to catch the mice and release them safely outside, despite the Hill’s abundance of "hawks."

"Berry’s defense of the mice is not only humane, it’s fiscally sound," says PETA’s wildlife biologist, Stephanie Boyles. She points out that glue traps, snap traps, poisons, and other lethal methods of rodent control are as ineffective as they are cruel, because more mice will simply move in unless whatever is attracting them—such as unsealed food and overflowing trashcans—is removed. The result is an endless trap-and-kill cycle that can be as time-consuming and frustrating as judicial nominee hearings.

"We commend Mr. Berry for defending even the smallest animals," says Ms. Boyles. "Compassion is always a sign of strength."

"...poisons, and other lethal methods of rodent control are as ineffective as they are cruel..."

Warfarin isn't cruel. Ever seen a mouse, rat, etc. that's eaten it? They wobble around like they're drunk for a while, then die peacefully. They have no idea what's happening to them.

They need to keep a cat there. One would think that there are more than two mice in the building. Besides, the mice do not have security clearances [high time to start a big scandal about this gross national security breach. The Rats might even go for it].

I hate mousetraps. They make me sad. Kudos to him for not killing the mice.

This coming from the people who shipped them in an overnight package.

Does this mean we can count on the PETA vote for Tom Delay?

I would return such an award to an "animal-friendly" organization which kills and dumps dogs and cats (including puppies and kittens) in dumpsters behind shopping centers.

PETA. Sodden arseholes, the lot of them.

We live in central New York State and we have lived in Manhattan. The Manhattan mice were not as cute as the upstate mice who are really cute. We also try to save them, but we have a female cat who sometimes gets to them before we can. We also had two male cats who were not as vicious as this female cat is concerning mice. The two male cats definitely were not into mice.
