Good question. Noah's Flood, and Saddam (sic) and Gomorrah come to mind...

when we feel mildly threatened

Flying airplanes into buildings and threatening to kill all Westerners is well beyond "mildly."

Just damn.

If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...

God "would" do what He does. In this case he has empowered us with reason to figure out the problem and weapons to destroy the enemy. And He has left us with the choice, as He always has, to defend or betray His people.

Nothing's blown up lately in Germany, has it?

( Ignoring some of the "fun" activities that used to happen before the Soviets fell....)

"What would God do?"

Wrong question. The right question is, "What would God have us/me do?"

When you ask yourself "What would God do?" how do you know your answer is correct?

It's hard to answer exactly what God would do, because the context of every situation is different. There was constant blood-letting in the Old Testament, much of it on God's direct orders.

Then along comes Jesus and gives us the radical, crazy order to LOVE our ENEMIES...

But even Jesus went into the money changers at the temple and trashed the place like Elliot Ness at a speakeasy. And you need to only read Revelation to see what God and Son have planned for those who refuse them/him.

BOTTOM LINE: God wants us to be slow to anger, a lot slower than is in our nature to be. But he does NOT want us to be reflexive, unthinking pacifists. He does not want us to show off our clean hands while our neighbor's blood is shed...

What would God do?

Pretty much as he is doing, I reckon.

Tell me what is so mild about the empty space in lower Manhatten where 3000+ people died in one shot, the hole in the field in Pennsylvanian, and the hole plowed into the Pentagon.
Tell me how that is mild.

Then tell me what is so mild about what happend to the U.S.S. Cole.

Tell me what is so mild about people saying "Allah the merciful, so that your will be known and for your greater glory, death to the infidels!" while cutting off someones head.

We can try to guess what God would do and attempt to apply it to our own behavior. But we aren't God. He can do lots of things we can't.

If we all want to avoid a war of incomprehensible destructiveness, we are going to need to learn to work with them to share the resources and discover how to keep making ourselves richer while using a sustainable amount

Hmmm. . .God used 'incomprehensible destructiveness' a time or two to perform a major cleaning and get rid of a lot of evil. If we are to ask ourselves 'what would God do,' we can't dismiss that as an option.

What would God do? Use his omnipotent powers and total knowledge to change the situation with a thought. By definition anything God decided to do would be the right solution.

And yet in my own life this doesn't work very often.
