White House drops 'war on terror' slogan

WASHINGTON, July 26 (UPI) -- The Bush administration has begun downplaying the "war on terror" in favor of "a global struggle against violent extremism," the New York Times reports.

Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the National Press Club that if something is a war "then you think of people in uniform as being the solution."

Myers said that while the military may be in the forefront now the long-term solution is more diplomatic, economic and political.

"The Anti-Jihad" would be so much snappier.

What we need is a War On Political Correctness. And to continue the War On Old Media, its cheerleader.

Well, according to the vast majority here on this forum, people in uniform are the solution to everything. After all, they are the ones who gave us every freedom we enjoy today.

"war against fanatic islam"

"war on terror"

"a global struggle against violent extremism"

"a global struggle for peace"

"struggle against ignorance"

"struggle for diversity"

Signs of mission creep to come.

Fundamental Christians and opponents of globalism beware.

Hey bill.........I TOLD you not to get your info from the NY Times.

Far enough right = left = billbears

You trust YOUR sources. I'll trust mine (i.e. the U.S. military regarding the WAR they're fighting).

So an active general and the Secretary of Defense aren't reliable sources on the specifics of the WOST (GSAVE)? Well I could have told you that years ago.

Not interested in continuing a discussion with a so-called conservative who agrees with Jane Fonda and Dennis Kucinich on matters of national security.

Sorry, billy. Leave me alone. I prefer talking to people who share my values about freedom.

Take your arrogant, ignorant sarcasm elsewhere. I'm not susceptible to the influence of leftists.......or you.

LOL!! Last post to you then

I prefer talking to people who share my values about freedom.

By freedom do you mean the 'right' to invade other nations? Or by freedom do you mean the 'right' to enforce what version of government you feel is best on them even if they don't want it? Don't worry yourself though. With Islam being an integral part of the new constitution, the 'freedom' you praise won't be there for long, perhaps a generation. Hey maybe we'll be able to send our grandkids to 'fix' it again!!

Take your arrogant, ignorant sarcasm elsewhere.

Not once have I insulted you. But I expect insults and personal attacks from those that have little to no argument to back up their 'feelings'

And as for your ridiculous statement that because I don't support every decision that comes from the administration I somehow can't support the troops, it's ridiculous. I spend time volunteering support for the troops and in prayer for them. I want them to stay safe as long as they're over there and come home to their families safely. But to blindly support civilian leadership without question is not patriotic. It's flat out stupid.

Agreeing with Dennis Kucinich and Jane Fonda on the War in Iraq is what's flat out stupid.

Right meets left. Dumb. Dangerous. Short-sighted. Self-centered.

What's the WOI?

This is really meaningless. What we call this problem doesn't matter as much as handling it properly. It certainly won't affect the functioning of these terrorist networks.

This is really meaningless

Just like the left, these people are grasping at straws to try to derive some 'meaning' by parsing words (that they're getting via the NYTimes).

Doesn't work for them any more than it does for the left, though.

What matters is what's being done, and what's being done is that we are fighting an international war on terror against an enemy that wants to destroy civilization.

Destroy civilization? That is not their goal. How ridiculous.

How then would you describe randomly and wantonly blowing up innocent people all over the world?

I have NO intention of arguing with you about your definition of liberalism. You made some very good points.

But, I was somewhat amazed to see the Heritage Foundation AGREES with this new WH policy.

Are they liberal too?

Terrorism. It's a very serious and deadly problem. But they're not trying to destroy civilization, which would be impossible for them to do anyway. Even if they set off a series of suitcase nukes, civilization would not be destroyed. On the other hand, it would see the end of their own civilization.

There isn't much point in our arguing what the goal of the terrorists is, since neither of us knows what's in their twisted minds.

Perhaps 'destroy civilization' is an overstatement..........but they want to do a whole lot more than scare people.

btw, I also wasn't addressing the chances of their success. I was speaking of what their goal is.......to destroy infidels, which is pretty much all of the civilized world.

Saying they want to destroy civilization is a bit much. They have different goals. Some just want us out of the Middle East, some hate the West and dream of destroying it, some are motivated by revenge, some are religious, some aren't. Some can be reasoned with and will put down their arms under the right circumstances. Some will never do so. No large group of people, even terrorists, are monolithic.

It's very important to understand their goals. Doing so will help us solve this problem, if possible, without having to suffer a Third World War.
