... in 1999 Joe Wilson was just a year or less into his new venture with his own consulting company.

And Iraq sent a delegation to Iraq in 1999...

Maybe Iraq should have saved some trips & money and arranged for Wilson's firm to be their front company. He seems willing enough...

My thoughts on Kelly are that he did speak illegally with reporters and did give the "sexed up dossier" phrase which was then used to brandish against Blair.

I believe he recognized his transgressions although he sought to deceive during the hearings a bit, he finally confess the truth (at least part of it...see the where he spoke with a female reporter and tried to say how it was once in passing at an event---but then admitted he'd spoken with her just a few weeks before over the phone).

I think after his role was exposed he killed himself. Must have been unstable to begin with.

Here's the text of the hearing where he testified:

In fact, it was Wilson's 1999 trip that was the basis for Intelligence saying what he had to report actually buttressed not debunked the Iraq-seeking-uranium story.

Wilson has obviously lied to a fawning and eager Walter Pincus. What a dolt.

How would Wilson know who allegedly approached Novak on the street if it wasn't Wilson himself- or Valerie? Did he have a detective following Novak around or what?

Wilson tells how his friend made a beeline from Novak to he, the great and glorious Joe, right after talking to Novak.

nevermind:

In chapter 17 of the book, Wilson traces the Novak/Plame affair to Tuesday afternoon, July 8, 2003. On that day, he writes, an unnamed friend of his showed up at Wilson's office in Washington and told him he had just bumped into Novak on the street. When Wilson's name came up, Novak allegedly told this man that his wife "works for the CIA."

Wilson's friend just "happens" to bump into a reporter on the street who is doing a story about Wilson.

Odd coincidence, no?

You're right, I'm sure Cooper et al told Wilson (and/or his close associates) after speaking with Rove.

Notice how Cooper basically mocked Rove's correct and accurate warning that Wilson's story was not truthful and instead Cooper ran with the Wilsonian version.

Timmerman noted that, in his reports for the Post, Walter Pincus consistently sought to debunk the Chinese espionage allegations.

2002 : (ITALY PASSES TO THE UK INFORMATION ABOUT SUSPECTED ILLICIT TRADE IN NIGER URANIUM INVOLVING LIBYA, IRAN, N KOREA AND CHINA) When the intelligence gathered in 1999-2001 was thrown into the diplomatic maelstrom that preceded the US-led invasion of Iraq, it took on new significance. Several services contributed to the picture. The Italians, looking for corroboration but lacking the global reach of the CIA or the UK intelligence service MI6, passed information to the US in 2001 and to the UK in 2002. -- "Evidence of Niger uranium trade 'years before war'," by Mark Huband, FT, (Financial Times UK), Published: 06/27/04, Last Updated: June 27 2004 21:56, http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1087373295039&p=1012571727085

You're right, I'm sure Cooper et al told Wilson (and/or his close associates) after speaking with Rove.

But then that raises the issue, how did the information get to Rove? And why did Wilson make the claim that his trip to Africa was triggered by inquiries from Cheney's office, when that false and could eventually be demonstrated to be so ... unless that was put in specifically to generate a response from the White House?

...but Thompson? He's crazy and has been for a long time.

True. But Thompson knows something that nobody else knows. He knows the true identity of Terrance J. Wilkinson -- who seems to have known what Joseph C. Wilson IV knew even before he published it.

The more I think about this, the more I think Wilson's stated desire to see Karl Rove frog-marched out of the White House is key.

I am in full agreement. And that may be where Judith Miller gets involved in this story. As I posted on another thread:
******************************************
1. Once Novak published the name -- Valerie Plame is a CIA agent -- Joe Wilson immediately identifies Karl Rove as the leaker, soon to be "frog-marched" from the White House. Evidently without any aforethought, and with stupefying certainty. He proclaims this version loudly, to anybody who will give him a forum, for a couple of weeks -- then begins to backtrack.

2. Judith Miller refuses to reveal her source and goes to jail.

Now, consider that:

a. Judith Miller is a Washington-based reporter for the NYTimes, who specializes in WMD.

b. Valerie Plame is a Washington-based employee of the CIA who, likewise, specializes in WMD. Plus, she and her husband are known to travel in circles frequented by the media.

Is it not likely that Miller knew Plame...and knew what she did? Is it not likely that she had cultivated Plame as a source? Indeed, perhaps, received some story guidance in the past from Plame? We now know, for example, that Miller knew and worked closely with David Kelly in the UK.

What if Plame (or Wilson) were to purposefully let Miller in on a little secret about ol' Joe's trip to Niger? What if it was suggested (or planned or hoped) that she pass this word along to Rove once the balloon went up with Wilson's op-ed?

It makes sense, doesn't it? The pieces fit, don't they? There is certainly no shortage of motivation (or ambition), is there?

All along, the main objective of this little scheme is to "damage the President's credibility" by attacking the SOTU message and the underlying premise for an Iraq war. But if Karl Rove should end up being "collateral damage", what would be wrong with that?
*************************************
I'm also inclined to believe that the true identity of Doug Thompson's "Terrance J. Wilkinson" would be very illuminating.

Larry Johnson, Vince Cannistaro, whoever, is another key player in this "scandal".

Thanks. My thinking is either he may have been the leak or he may have had a good idea who it was, and in either case he was probably talking to Miller about it.

Thompson may have created Terrance J. Wilkinson out of vapor and smoke. But he didn't make up his story -- somebody fed it to him.

Who?
