SPID crossroads becomes a circus
An animal rights protester went topless because of the big top Thursday at one of the busiest intersections in Corpus Christi.
Allison Ezell, 24, of Indianapolis, crouched on a brick median wearing only pasties, black underwear and shackles during the lunch hour Thursday at the southeast corner of Staples Street and South Padre Island Drive.
She turned her back to traffic, showing three imitation scars slashed along her ribs, symbolic of allegations that circus animals are regularly beaten.
"A naked woman laying on the sidewalk is symbolism," Ezell said of the theatrical presentation. "She's very vulnerable and these animals are shackled and beaten."
Ezell is an employee of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She flew to Corpus Christi to protest the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus scheduled for Aug. 1014 at American Bank Center. About 10 local PETA members joined her and held posters of animals that have allegedly been abused in circus training.
In protest of PETA, disc jockeys Mark Wintrow and Chris O'Brien, of country radio station KRYS-FM 99, staked out the same median to grill hotdogs and give away circus tickets and animal crackers. They donned shirts with iron-on letters "DJETA" - disc jockeys eating tasty animals.
Police Capt. Dave Cook, who observed the scene, said he did not arrest Ezell for near nudity because she was not disorderly and didn't significantly disrupt traffic.
Ringling Bros.' national public relations director Darin Johnson said the circus company has veterinarians, handlers and trainers who make sure the animals "get the very best care."
After the protest, O'Brien took Ezell on what he called a "date." Asked about the odd juxtaposition, Ezell said she merely accepted an offer for a free salad.

Allison Ezell, 24-year-old PETA employee (left), and Megan Hoch, 19-year-old PETA member, protest Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Thursday at the intersection of SPID and Staples Street. The circus, in Corpus Christi Aug. 10-14 at American Bank Center, has been accused of abusing animals.
Next the will be protesting household pets, if they haven't already.
Nice try. Not even sex sells their load of sh*t.
Unlike PETA, who has been killing animals while lying about it.
Very very good one. RFLMAO
Man, I love Texas.
Some friends and I went to a PETA protest last year. We set up a pit grill across the streeet and cooked ribs and brisket. We drew a larger crowd.
She has a future posing for S&M porn sites....
Guess she didn't have a body that stopped traffic . . .
I do so amuse myself!
At least it looks like she's got the body for it.
Oh man.
PETA needs to be disbanded.
brought to you by the same people who love to torture animals.
HA! I was there just a week ago--my son is going to attend TAMU-CC. I'll have to show him what he missed!
Didn't I read something about PETA gassing unwanted pets that they'd been give by animal rescuers?
Thanks for the link; I'd heard about the scandal but had not seen posted details.
No Texas gals up for this? They have to ship in the air-heads from my hometown?
