DERAILMENT NEAR I-55 & IMPERIAL EXIT

A train has derailed in Jefferson County near I-55 at the Imperial exit Monday afternoon. It appears more than a dozen cars have derailed. There are reports that two trains have sideswiped each other. Numerous cars are off the tracks, and the outer road is blocked off. Some of those train cars were carrying brand new cars and SUVs. Some of those cars are laying in the grassy area on the side of the interstate. Part of southbound I-55 is shut down. Traffic in the area is becoming very congested, maybe as far as 5 miles. Fire crews are looking for downed power lines in that area. There are no reports of evacuations. We'll have more information on FOX 2 News at 5.

Near as I can tell, it sounds like it was a collision of two Burlington Northern-Santa Fe trains.

The SUVs caused the accident.

MplsSteve, you are correct...

KSDK-Two Burlington-Northern trains collided near Interstate 55 and Richardson Road. The collision caused a train derailment, but has not affected traffic.

It's not clear what caused the collision, or whether there are any injuries.

Some of the train cars were carrying vehicles.

The derailment happened near Beck in Jefferson County, south of Arnold.

Just as UP announced the addition of six new engines today that would feature unique detailing describing personalities from the railroad's past ...

BNSF is not a part of the UP system. That line is a part of what used to be the St. Louis - San Francisco (Frisco) River Division that ran from Lindenwood Yards, in St. Louis, to Memphis.

I know. But the engines could have been UP engines. Turns out they weren't, but I didn't know that when I posted.

Never mind. It wasn't that good a joke anyway.
