Houston Game Store Worker Finds Newborn Among Trash CPS Says Girl Probably 1 To 2 Hours Old When Abandoned
UPDATED: 12:38 pm EDT August 1, 2005
HOUSTON -- A judge will decide Monday who will get custody of a newborn girl found abandoned among trash in a west Houston alley.
Representatives from Child Protective Services will ask a judge to grant them temporary custody of the baby.
CPS spokeswoman Estella Olguin said the 6-pound, 6-ounce, full-term newborn was only a couple of hours old when Chris Patten, an employee taking out trash at the Cyberium Game Center, spotted the baby.
Patten said that at first, he thought the girl was a doll on a blanket that someone had thrown out.
"She started to move a bit," Patten said.
However, after a closer look, Patten said he saw the baby moving her arms and went to tell his boss.
"She wasn't crying. She was just kind of moving her arms a little bit. There were some ants kind of nearby," Cyberium Gaming Center employee Ethan Getz said.
Investigators said the baby's umbilical cord was cut off and tied with a rubber band. The baby was wrapped in a yellow blanket with a pacifier.
"If this citizen hadn't come along, most likely we would have found this baby dead," Houston Fire Department spokesman Melvin Wallace said.
Houston police and firefighters took the infant to Columbia West Houston Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition, officials said.
CPS officials said it would be difficult to find the child's mother with several apartment complexes and schools nearby.
CPS, which has emergency custody of the baby, is urging the girl's parents to come forward.
"Maybe there was a hope that someone would pick her up, but there was nothing here for her. There was no care package, no note or anything -- just a baby in a blanket, Patten said.
The Baby Moses Law, enacted by the state Legislature in 1999, allows mothers to legally leave their baby at facilities that can provide emergency care such as fire stations and hospitals.
I take it this is Houston PA, not Houston TX.
Stories like this never cease to blow my mind. I can't say anymore. Too disgustipated.
Sorry, no, Houston TX
I don't even think there is a game store in Houston, PA, it's so tiny!
Please let her enjoy & be blessed with a Daddy and Mommy to Love and Care for her deeply/passionately/fully.
I thought this is what Roe v. Wade was supposed to prevent.
Sorry, I saw the link to "pittsburgh channel" in red at the top of the article, and thought it was Houston PA.
Naw, Roe v. Wade is there to prevent women from perforating a uterus with a coat hanger while killing their gestating offspring.
Looks like the baby made her saving throw.
I'm glad the baby is safe, and I hope she finds a good home.
I have to laugh, though, at the reaction of the two young men from the game shop who found her.
"Hey, Dude, what's this in the trash?"
"I don't know, man, it looks like a doll in a blanket."
"But Dude, it's waving at me".
"Man, look at all those ants nearby!"
Well to start off with, I forgot to mention that I was glad that the baby was found and is alright. To the woman that did this, this is the worst kind of abortion, in my book.
I don't know if you've seen the documentary on TV yet called "In The Womb", I did last night on the National Geographic Channel and I believe it has aired on discovery and or the learning channel as well. This was the first time I had seen it, and I was BLOWN AWAY by it. Job well done by whoever put it together. Anyway, I'd sure like to see this program become part of education for young girls particulary those contemplating an abortion. I'm not a gambling man but I would bet money that had this program made it into various education programs that we'd see abortion numbers drop dramatically.
Nope, Houston, TX. Amazing, isn't it? Even with a "baby Moses" law (allowing mothers to drop off babies at fire stations and hospitals without prosecution), you hear about this kind of stuff.
Wasn't aborted or murdered (after birth)...all is well. A scared mother. Pray that a good home is found
Since the left pretty much controls education, and abortion is one of their primary sacraments, those who need to see it most never will.
Sad, but you're probably right.
I wouldn't give the mother any credit. The baby was thrown in the freakin' trash. It was attempted murder.
It just sickens me. One day I would like to find out why some of us cannot have children while these people have them to, literally, throw away.
The few times people have dropped babies off at firestations, C.P.S was able to track the mother down and place the baby in the care relatives.C.P.S. should allow women to give babies up annonymously.A woman ,who must abandon a baby, probably comes from a bad and abusive family.I'm happy the baby was found.I hope C.P.S. never finds the mother. It may be this babies only chance of having a good family and a happy life.
The Lord's hand was evident in the happy ending to this baby abandonment.
