Isn't there an ancient Swedish/Asian connection, or am I dreaming that?

I have heard of Melungeons and I have seen something on the History channel about them. I wonder about my grandfather. He was born in Bonham Texas in 1879 but his family had just come from Arkansas and before that Tenn. He looked like they describe Melungeons. Black hair, fairly dark complexion and light eyes. I wonder where you could get a more complete list of surnames?

but I don't know what that surname list I posted to you means. you might try Googling "melungeon" and "surnames".

I have no idea. If true, it would be very interesting.

i haven't been able to find any Swedish/Asian connection via Google. must have gotten the "shovel teeth" some other way; possibly Indian, i guess

" If I could just see a photo of the blue people, I'd know for sure.'

I just checked google images and the only photos are pretty indistinct. The color photography of the day was pretty primitive

Anyone else ever hear that when Europeans first encountered the Mandan tribe, the Mandan were discovered to have blue eyes and could converse easily with the Welsh speakers in the European group?

My anscestors were Scotch Irish and settled in South Carolina. I found some of them there on the First US Federal census. I thnk they farmed or worked in turpentine.

Thanks for the lesson, I didn't know where the term "tar-heels" came from.

Read my link in post #30. These Welsh folks (when-ever they came) are the ones who are suppose to have become the Mandans.

There is a plaque (at Ft Morgan) here at the entrance of Mobile Bay commerating the arrival of Prince Madoc. He/they are reputed to have landed here in 1170AD and made their way up through Tenneessee, etc.

"What's the "Mandan" tribe?"

The dictionary definition is as follows;

A Native American people formerly living in villages along the Missouri River in south-central North Dakota, with present-day descendants on Lake Sakakawea in west-central North Dakota.

A member of this people.

Your self-admitted, steady diet of "too much TV" prior to 1992 is showing.

you're right. i've completely bought into the myth of inbreeding.

to your credit, 8 years of seeing James Carville on TV probably didn't help either

Thank you that is a very interesting site. I have looked at all the names but did not find any of my families surnames. Thanks, I will go back again anyway and I sent it to my brother.
