A brain-dead pregnant woman who has been kept on life support for nearly three months to give her fetus more time to develop gave birth to a baby girl Tuesday, the woman's brother-in-law said.

There were no complications during delivery and the baby "is doing well," Justin Torres wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

The baby, Susan Anne Catherine Torres, weighs one pound 13 ounces and is 13 1/2 inches long, he said.

The infant was delivered via caesarean section, the hospital said.

Susan Torres, a 26-year-old researcher at the National Institutes of Health, lost consciousness from a stroke May 7 after aggressive melanoma spread to her brain.

Yes, she sure does. Read where the baby girl was born and is doing fine. Oh if we could only have a miracle. Logan prayers are in order for sure and will be said.

I wonder if there is any way to contact Dad to invite him here so we can offer support 'in person'?

And who appointed you the "all knowing"?????

I am the Nana of Logan, aka Texas Termite, and I will tell you that these infants have a very real chance at a good life. More important, this is a family decision. One made of LOVE, COMPASSION and trust in our God that His will be done.

Thousands of prayers helped bring our precious child to where he is today...... and thank heaven there weren't any of you that felt he shouldn't be! He and many like him are an example of prayers, miracles, modern medicine and LOVE.

Nana (and damn proud of it!!!)

I'm sure the NY Times would write a concerned editorial worrying that some woman would become brain-dead two days after becoming pregnant and be forced by her Christian fundamentalist

What thinking, rational being would care what the NY Times has to say on this subject?

Please, do you: enlighten me.

I thought the comment was over the top – even crass, considering the circumstances. I know you wished the child well and I am sure that is heartfelt and more representative of you then the Hillary did that comment, hence my post.

I think there are times when jokes are inappropriate; this is one of those times. Using a brain dead woman – and to some extent, intentionally or not, the pain of her family – to make a political point / joke seems, to me, to be inappropriate.

I pray for little Susan tonight, that she might be the emblem of love to her father and to her family - the physical reminder that love truly never dies.

May God bless this little child, even as her mother be blessed in Heaven.

"charity of strangers"

Who the hell are you to tell me or anybody else how to spend their own money? As for the rest of your pathetic diatribe that hoped for death against a joyful birth (which is intrinsically evil, by the by): A) this is a devout Catholic family, they acted in accordance with their faith--you also against freedom of religion? B)the family has insurance and people willingly (i.e. "free will", liberty, something with which we are endowed by our creator) filled in the gaps

If you ever go to the hospital, should we tell them that you'll refuse treatment because you don't want to be a burden to an insurance company?

Hard as it will be for me, I will pray for you. You obviously profoundly need it to heal your warped soul.
