'Pot' bust yields catnip

WATERVILLE -- A cat somewhere might be in trouble with the law.
Police officers thought they had found a marijuana haul grown indoors -- but when they searched a Silver Street apartment Tuesday morning, all they caught was catnip.
Catnip is an herb of the mint family. Scientists say it provokes a "high" for cats -- but not humans.
Police went to Stefanie Glidden's apartment above Silver Street Tavern at 9:15 a.m., convinced that pot plants were growing on a window sill.
"I was in the restaurant at the time," said Glidden, 24, who works at Silver Street Tavern. "I was told by the chef that the police were at my apartment and they had a warrant."
Accompanied by James Richards, the tavern's co-owner and the building's leaseholder, Glidden showed officers her herb garden in a flower box.
"They kept asking, 'Where's the white plant pot?'" she said.
With Richards' cooperation, officers then searched the apartment above Glidden's -- where they found catnip in a white plant pot.
Police said the search was the result of a mistaken tip.
Officers who went to check the window saw what they believed to be the illegal plant, according to Police Chief John E. Morris.
They then sought approval from the Kennebec County district attorney for a search warrant, signed by a judge.
"(The search) was done with professionalism, and nothing was damaged that I know of," Morris said. "I'm not sorry we executed a search warrant, but I'd be happy to talk to (those affected) to tell our side of the story."
Morris said the search lasted about a half-hour.
Richards and Glidden said they believe the search was the result of a police officer moving into an apartment across the alley from Glidden.
"The kicker is, if you go by the alley between the tavern and pawn shop, you cannot see (her window) from the road,' said James Richards.
Glidden is both amused and irate.
"There's an incredible narcotics problem in the city, and they're worried about catnip?" she said. "It sounds silly to me."

Have you ever seen a cat high on catnip? Its a disgrace!
Here come the stoner viking kitties!!!
Ban it!
Cats are useless when they sit around purring listening to Pink Floyd's Animals all day.
We had a repairman in once when I was drying fresh basil and parsley in the microwave. He was freaking out thinking it was drugs, lol.
"Police said the search was the result of a mistaken tip."
Sounds like some moron thought they had caught themselves a pothead but wasn't smart enough to know what a pot plant looked like.
Some of my kitties are mean drunks on catnip.
I guess these cops don't know that PetSmart sells catnip plants.
This is amusing! INSANELY amusing!
"Ma'am, we have reason to believe you're getting animals high."
Puss-N-Boots --- "Eess not mine!"
Sounds like all you need to do to get the cops to harass someone you don't like is claim that one of their plants is pot.
"Maam, don't you know what this stuff does to your pets? They'll just sit around all day, doing nothing with their lives."
That's all it takes, just an anonymous tip.
I have a big cat (18 pounds, and not fat per the vet), and a little dog (14 pounds). I'll take a sock, and fill it with catnip, and the cat will roll around with it, get stoned, and then just lounge. That is, until the dog comes charging into the room, grabs the sock, and takes off through the house with it. The cat goes wild, runs off after the dog, beats the heck out of her and takes the sock back.
I keep telling the dog, "Don't mess with the junkie - he's bigger than you and meaner than you..." Stupid dog never listens - she'll go running right back and try to take the sock away.
I was watching an episode of "Good Eats" where A.B. takes his fresh herbs, places them between two cheap A.C. filters and bungee cords the filters to a box fan.
Looked like a pretty good drying method.
