Dylan Song 'Changed the World' - Poll

Bob Dylan's song "Like a Rolling Stone" topped a poll on Friday to find the 100 songs, movies, TV shows and books that "changed the world" in the opinion of musicians, actors and industry experts.

Dylan's 1965 single beat Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" into second place in the survey for "Uncut" magazine.

Paul McCartney, Noel Gallagher, Robert Downey Jr, Rolling Stone Keith Richards and Lou Reed were among those who gave their views for the poll.

"I absolutely remember where I was when I first heard it. It got me through adolescence," rocker Patti Smith said of the winning song.

Ex-Beatle McCartney picked "Heartbreak Hotel" as his number one choice.

"It's the way (Presley) sings it as if he is singing from the depths of hell," McCartney said. "His phrasing, use of echo, it's all so beautiful. Musically, it's perfect."

The Beatles' song "She Loves You" ranked at number three, followed by the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."

Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" emerged as the most influential film at number five, followed by "The Godfather" and "The Godfather II" films in sixth place.

"The Prisoner" was the top-ranking TV series at number 10, while Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road" was the highest-ranking book, in 19th place.

Actor Edward Norton and ex-Beach Boy Brian Wilson also took part in the poll, marking the magazine's 100th issue.

Could they have possibly found someone less significant than Patti Smith to interview? I mean, really. A nobody.

I kind of prefer Gounod but I'm not fussy.

This album has them all

You can even sample a few :-)

Peter Ilich Tchaikovski Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beehoven may have "changed the world".

Bob Dylan did not. Even if he did change the world, everyone who thought so was so stoned out they did not care or did not remember.

Well if these lyrics don't make you proud to be an American, give you goosebumps and bring a tear to your eye then you'd better check your pulse.

"Johnnie get your gun, get you gun, get your gun,
Take it on the run, on the run, on the run,
Hear them calling you and me;
Every son of Liberty
Hurry right away, no delay, go today,
Make your daddy glad to have had such a lad
Tell your sweetheart not to pine,
To be proud her boy's in line.

Chorus:

Over There, Over There
Send the word, send the word,
Over There
That the Yanks are coming,
The Yanks are coming,
The drums rum tumming everywhere
So prepare,
Say a Prayer
Send the word,
Send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over.
And we won't be back till it's over over there!

Johnnie get your gun, get you gun, get your gun,
Johnnie show the Hun, you're a Son-of-a-Gun,
Hoist the flag and let her fly
Like true heros do or die
Pack your little kit, show your grit, do your bit,
Soldiers to the ranks from the towns and the tanks,
Make your Mother proud of you and to Liberty be true.

Chorus:

Over There, Over There
Send the word, send the word,
Over There
That the Yanks are coming,
The Yanks are coming,
The drums rum tumming everywhere
So prepare,
Say a Prayer
Send the word,
Send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over.
And we won't be back till it's over over there!"

"Over There"
George M.Cohan
1917

Check your SSN recently?

Yeah and I am one of three people still alive that saw the ending of the program when it was first broadcast.

Honestly. Bob Dylan can't carry a tune in a bucket with a lid on it.

Do you like other religious classical music? My faves in that sub-genre are Requiems. Have you ever heard Berlioz's? Grandiose and awe-inspiring, yet a deeply personal expression of grief and ultimately peace (no, I didn't steal that from the liner notes).

while Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road" was the highest-ranking book, in 19th place.

Huh? Let's see if I can come up with more influential books (both positive and negative): the Bible, the Koran, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Mein Kampf, Das Kapital, the Communist Manifesto, the Joy of Sex, the Joy of Cooking, and the FairTax Book.

>> Dylan DID NOT take part in the antiwar movement.

Better than any of his music, I relish a little epiphany he had for libertarians: "If you live outside the law, you must be honest."

That's from memory -- not necessarily perfectly quoted, but in the ballpark.

Personally, my life changed forever when the great musical prophet Borry McFerrin told me that no matter what happen to me, "Don't Worry, Be Happy". I can't imagine where I'd be today without that sage advice.

You correct, but if that is all you "hear" you don't understand Dylan.

BTW, my favorite Dylan is I Believe In You off of Slow Train Coming.

I'll admit to that.

It's a curse of having a musical ear. I can't get past the sound to get to the words. Same thing with Janis Joplin.

Yes, I do, and much other classical music. Or, wth, Peggy Sue.

I'm pretty sure I have a CD of the Berlioz (Grande Messe des morts). My tastes run to the romantic, so he's a favorite on other fronts. Brahms's Ein Deutsches Requiem is likewise haunting, but hardly the sort of thing to cheer you up :-)

Like a Rolling Stone is a great song but changed the world?????

I know.  Seriously, no SONG changed the world, these fools are too caught up in their own self-delusional importance.

Between Dylan and Joplin, I'd rather spend the afternoon in a steam foundry :-)
