TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State University doesn't plan to change its "Seminoles" nickname.
The NCAA decided today to ban schools using Native American names and symbols from hosting championship events. But Florida State President T-K Wetherell says he'll sue the NCAA for its - quote - "outrageous and insulting" decision.
Wetherell says - quote - "This university will forever be associated with the "unconquered" spirit of the Seminole Tribe of Florida."
The NCAA decided to ban the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments. And nicknames or mascots deemed hostile or abusive won't be allowed on team uniforms at collegiate tournaments after February First.
The Seminole Tribe of Florida has issued a resolution supporting Florida State's "Seminoles" nickname.
It's obvious the NCAA just has too much time on its hands.

PETA is protesting the use of animals as college mascots. In particular, the Oregon Duck holds water fowl up to ridicule. In Arizona, the United Wiccans are protesting the nickname "Sun Devils" and in California, Greek-Americans picket USC, saying the "Trojans" is a hurtful belittling of their heritage.
And so on for ever. The world is going to hell in a handcart and we are obsessed with trivia.
If they are that offended, then I think the story of the indians should not be in text books used in state schools. I think we should bury the NCAA too. Who says they should be able to tell teams what to call themselves? Why not start another college league?
I can always spot an FSU person because they always forget to ask me if I want fries with my orders,....but gotta' tell youall, this new rule really sucks, and so does the NCAA. Even though FSU hasn't done too well in Academics is no reason to punish the Native Americans by making them change their names. I mean after all my school mascot is an insect, and we are all in trouble if the Yellow Jacket community becomes offended too!
Someone on another thread suggested just that. The top 200 schools should tell the NCAA to go pound sand and start their own organization. What would the NCAA do?

I agree with you, it is patently ridiculous. Any thinking person sees it for what it is and I intend to do my part and write/call the National Clique of Arrogant Anuses (TM) and lodge my protest with their social engineering scheme. What a bunch of laughable losers.
The NCAA has gone whacko because of the whackos that are in charge. This is from their site:
"The presidents and chancellors who serve on the NCAA Executive Committee have adopted a new policy to prohibit NCAA colleges and universities from displaying hostile and abusive racial, ethnic, and national origin mascots, nicknames or imagery at any of the 88 NCAA championships."
What is meant by "hostile and abusive?" "The NCAA objects to institutions using racial/ethnic/national origin references in their intercollegiate athletics programs," said NCAA President Myles Brand.
So it's the PC academic crowd that's making the rules. There is a need for a collegiate athletic organization. But its board should be made up of former coaches, refs, players and alums. And of course, Indians :)

Good for them! The Seminole tribe supports their nickname. Someone at the NCAA went insane about political correctness, and they're going to catch a lot of heat about this.

My high school was a victim of this PC crap. I graduated an Indian. Now everyone graduates as a Bengal.
The Seminoles ought to replace their regular jerseys with ones that say "NCAA Sucks" during the playoffs. But then, it would be hard to tell them apart when they play the Braves, Aztecs, and Illini. Maybe they can change their name to the "NCAA Pantywaists".
