PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: With the President, First Lady and the dogs relaxing at the ranch this weekend, there are no new photos to post. So I've selected a theme -- GWB and our Armed Forces -- and found many photos to let us enjoy a walk down memory lane. The theme photos are all from early in his presidency. They show GWB's closeness with our military both before and after 9/11/01.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Monday, the President travels to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He will be touring the Sandia Laboratory there, and then will be making remarks after signing the comprehensive energy legislation that passed recently.
Tuesday, the President is going to have his economic advisors to the ranch. He will participate in a briefing with them on the state of our economy. Afterwards, GWB will make some remarks and participate in a press availability.
Wednesday, President Bush will traveling to Aurora, Illinois, where he will sign the transportation legislation. Aurora is the largest town in the north-central Illinois congressional district of House Speaker Dennis Hastert.
Saturday, tentative, but the President usually participates in an RNC event in August at the ranch. As of yesterday, the President's schedule was not firmed up beyond Wednesday.

It's amazing how many established actors volunteered during WWII: Henry Fonda, William Holden, Glen Ford--Ford continued to serve in the Naval Reserves during Korea and Vietnam. And Fonda was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor--choke on that, Jane!
I also got In Harm's Way (John Wayne at Pearl Harbor with a host of other known actors.) When they run that on TV they edit out 20-30 minutes of the film so it doesn't make as much sense as the full length theatre version.
I wonder if that happen with Island in the Sky... cut down for commercials.
Ya have to love the expression of the secret service agent right behind the president in that photo. :o)
Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon were a wonderful movie pairing. Did you know that Garson had a torrid affair with the actor, Richard Ney, who played her son in that film? He was 11 years her junior. They married when the film was released and were divorced four years later.

You're gonna hate this, but they just finished Hondo! :) Now they're showing Red River. It's the usual movies that are always included in these marathons--except for Hondo. I missed that one. I'm glad that's it's coming to DVD--hear that, Nancy :)
Fort Apache is coming up at 8pm EST, followed by She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and The Three Godfathers. The marathon ends at 6am Sunday morning.
Don't forget one of the biggest of them all, Clark Gable. He joined up after his beloved wife, Carole Lombard, was killed in an airplane crash. Like Jimmy Steward, Gable joined the Army Air Corps, and he also flew combat missions.
I think her first deployment is supposed to be sometime next year.

times out off the coast for exercises and its air wing
doing touch & goes.
I was lucky to be one of the thousands that saw the
Reagan's home porting. Shortly is will be on its first
deployment.

I don't believe so. The movie lasted two hours and fifteen minutes with the commercials, and AMC is usually very faithful to the original versions of films--except for those darned commercials. Just when you get interested ...
And when they aired "The High And The Mighty" that was THREE hours! I couldn't watch it all.
LOL! Yeah...on film, Garson always played proper, somewhat matronly ladies. But she was married three times. The third time was the charm, though. It lasted almost 40 years, until the death of her husband.
Guess I'll have to wait for our new TV and the DVD release of Hondo to see it again....been many years.
I've seen Red River a couple times this year, before sending it on to the troops.
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (2 of them) will be coming in the mail this coming week.
Got to have the new TV by then.
That's a shame about Carole Lombard--she was traveling for the troops or something (USO?) when her plane crashed.
Good afternoon, Pol. I remember well when you went to see her steam into San Diego for the first time. Do you think the Reagan will deploy this year rather than next? Most of her fitness trials must be just about complete. Does she still have the same captain as the man who was at the president's funeral last year?
Do you like the way Red River ends? That's always bothered me. The movie is perfect except for the last two minutes.
He was always very distinguished, even in his later years, and he had a long, productive career.
Nice to hear Greer finally got it right in the marriage department.
My copy of the book Mrs. Miniver must be in one of the unpacked boxes in the garage....

As part of my cable I also get TCM as a regular deal.
I guess haveing a major local cable system, COX helps.
On occasion I may watch TCM. I prefer movies from the
1930s to early 1940s and those that take place in NY or
England. The other eve. they had several old Alac Gennis
movies made at the Ealing studio, Laverder Hill Mob.
One of the characters from Are You Being Served was in
that movie.
