Dozens arrested at peaceful protest at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

LIVERMORE - Dozens of activists were arrested this morning in front of the west gate at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory as part of a protest honoring the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

The march and rally, entitled "Nagasaki Never Again!," drew nearly 100 protesters -- about half of the number that showed up for a similar rally Saturday evening at the lab.

That protest was one of four nationally coordinated rallies held that day at major U.S. weapons labs or test sites. All of the protests called for abolition of nuclear weapons and marked the 60th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing.

Although the marchers were peaceful, many protesters failed to disperse when asked to by Alameda County Sheriff officers and were arrested. David Schwoegler, a spokesman with the lab, said the protesters would be booked and released, unless they lacked identification or have warrants. Schwoegler was still awaiting final numbers late morning Tuesday on those arrested.

The rally was organized by the "Seeds of Change Coalition," which includes the Livermore Conversion Project, Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment and the Western States Legal Foundation.

i agree, "nagasaki never again!" we put the crew of those bombers at too much risk. next time we should use ICBMs or remote controlled planes to deliver a nuke.

I guess they had trouble hitchhiking from the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station to the lab. ;)

Then they weren't so peaceful after all, huh.

Yup, never again. Next nation that tries to sack our cities and navies will find that their home nation is a radioactive wasteland, even before they get back.

What's funny is that LLNL didn't even exist until the 1950's. If the idiots wanted to protest, they should have gone to Los Alamos. However, that would have required them actually taking real time out of their lives, getting up before noon, and probably missing a few trips to Starbucks.

Well... it's been almost four years and I don't see any radioactive wasteland.

Osama's kinda skinny to be considered a nation, but if you've the address, I know a few folks who would be most happy to test out some new hardware on him.

Around these parts, it's called "Slap a Jap Day".

Or, at least it WAS, until the PC Police got involved.

Now it's just simply called, "Guilty White Men Must Forever Apologize For Doing the Right Thing to End a Terrible War Day"

I'm not sure what it is about protesters. Here's an idea: try VOTING. If you win, great! If you lose, marshal your voting base and try harder next time. Don't walk around with signs like homeless people asking for handouts.

When I worked at AVCO in the early 1980's about once a month protesters who stood at the front gates daily would make a run for it and get into the plant proper to attempt to destroy the weapons of war. We were the prime contractor for the Mk 21 reentry vehicle for the MX missile and the deployment module as well as the protective deployment shroud system. One time they entered with hammers and fake blood and squirted the blood all over the place and beat some instrumentation with hammers. They were dragged out and prosecuted for trespassing. The press was denied spokesmen so in essence the effort was not reported well. Since many of the employees held secret clearances and even those who didn't were not allowed to discuss the events as we were warned in meetings or memos to not answer reporters questions.

This happened several times and the protests outside the gates lost interest among the peaceniks over time. In the end the USA deployed the MX, USSR realized that the MX was a superior weapon system with first strike capability, and the USSR went bankrupt in attempts to keep pace. It is good that the protesters were unsuccessful.

Too bad there wasn't a mountain lion nearby!
Last year on Good Friday, the nuts did their yearly sit-in at the lab. As a cop was putting out the cones to block the street at 7 AM, he sees a mountain lion 10 ft away! It went behind the sign at the entrance to the lab and stayed there. They told the nuts about it and they still held their sit-in. After it was over, the cops shot the lion.
