Bush Taps (Zell) Miller to Oversee War Monuments
AP ^ | August 9, 2005 | JEFFREY McMURRAY

After snubbing his Democratic Party to deliver the Republican keynote address for President Bush, former Georgia Sen. Zell Miller seemed a good bet for an ambassadorship, adviser post or maybe even a Cabinet office. On Tuesday, the White House revealed Miller's choice: a seat on the American Battle Monuments Commission.

"I'm just an old man looking after cemeteries," Miller said in an interview Tuesday after President Bush tapped him for the job.

Although Miller has retired from virtually all aspects of public life since leaving the Senate in January, he acknowledged letting Bush know of his interest in the commission last year after returning from the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy.

"I got to thinking, 'Hey, this is something I've always been interested in — military history,'" Miller said. "It's not so much building more monuments but making sure the ones we do have are maintained correctly."

According to the group's Web site, the commission is responsible for commemorating the work of American armed forces since World War I. Among its duties are constructing military burial grounds around the world and designing and constructing monuments.

Miller fills a vacancy on the 12-member commission, which includes 11 commissioners and Secretary John Nicholson. He said the duties are extremely limited, just a few weekends a year, and doesn't anticipate a salary beyond travel expenses.

As for his other retirement tasks, Miller has been giving speeches, serving as a part-time commentator on the Fox News Channel and working on a book about Appalachia.

Yet another case where this POTUS has a heart of gold. I am sure Zell being a fine Marine will give it his all.

I am glad that Zell is happy....but Bush would have been better served by having him as a spokesman...

Zell sells Bush better than Bush does...

I think it's a great fit. He's pretty much retired, it doesn't sound too taxing, he's a Marine, and nobody looks after military graves and monuments like an old Southerner who knows his history.

I'd dream that Zell ought to be groomed for 2008 - and not as a Rat...

I've always felt that Sen. Miller is an honorable man and I believe he'll be perfect at this post. very wise choice.

Zell Miller probably the only decent, true democrat left.

A wonderful choice, despite the catty tone of the article. :-)

Zell Miller is a reminder of a time when, although it was still Republicans vs. Democrats, you didn't have to fear for your country when the Democrats won. Maybe you didn't like it, but you didn't have to brace for brutal assaults on traditional America and its families, either.

Zell is a perfect choice for this position.
I hope he serves for a long, long time.

"I'd dream that Zell ought to be groomed for 2008 - and not as a Rat..."

Dispite his honest and enraged feelings about "spit balls", he is a Demo from the past. I doubt he could dump the party line and switch effectively. Besides, we need some fresh right leaning republicans to take up the challenge. You can't ask the Republican voters to vote for a life time Democrat. It would not be fair. Let's honor him for his service to his country as a Marine and a perhaps somewhat honest representative, and let him do something for the military he loves. Old soldiers, sailors, airmen, aviators and Marines just slowly fade away..........glory spent but with HONOR.

Zell Miller is a sadly disillusioned man. He belongs in a time of that party's history that's long gone now. This is the only Democrat alive who I can stand to look at....He's comfortable enough in his own skin to know when it's time to close the door behind him.

Great for Zell! He will do a fine job facilitating honors towards our fighting men and women on the monument board.

But it would be even cooler if he were made an ambassador! Laura Ingraham this morning was commenting about how neat it would be if Zell were made ambassador to France. Wouldn't that be something to watch!

Hey!

Maybe I should get in contact with Sen. Miller about the WWI memorial idea?

What do you think, Noosey?
