An effort was made to release the controversial documentary "Winter Soldier" during John Kerry's failed 2004 presidential campaign, but industry insiders decided to hold the film back fearing a backlash against Kerry.
But with the election safely behind them, "Winter Soldier" -- a documentary which alleges atrocities by U.S. troops in Vietnam -- is set for re-release and is once again causing a stir.
The Village Voice reports that last year a movie executive balked at screening "Winter Soldier during John Kerrys run for president for fear that it would do him more harm than good.
After Kerry won the Democratic nomination, Film Forums Karen Cooper considered showing the 34-year-old documentary, which briefly features young Vietnam vet Kerry.
But even though a filmmaker used footage from "Winter Soldier to lionize Kerry in a biographical movie underwritten by Democrats, Cooper was concerned about its possible negative effect on Kerrys campaign, New Yorks Village Voice reports, and decided not to screen it.
Milestone Film and Video co-founders Dennis Doros and Amy Heller then picked up the film, which has been discredited by many vets.
But, said Heller, "because the right is well funded and very litigious, it became clear that the best way to release it was to have a separate corporation that would protect the assets of Milestone just in case the Swift Boat Veterans want to make trouble.
Now Heller and Doros say they can take on riskier material and are set to screen the documentary in several cities.
And according to the Voice, they can thank "the fragility of the Kerry campaign for landing them distribution rights.

Summation: Hollywood has taken license, once again, to put their liberal bias into the film.
"Hollywood has taken license, once again, to put their liberal bias into the film."
- Even though the Republicans (via Nixon) has taken virtually all of the liberal heat for the Vietnam mess that he inherited from Kennedy and Johnson, in retrospect it was the Democratic Party that was gutted by that experience and remains so to this day.
Not only did they drive Nixon from office but the Democrats in Congress and the Senate denied funding for South Vietnamese aid after the US withdrew. The South fell shortly after and then we had the boat people, Laos and the mountains of skulls in Cambodia.
At some level the liberals involved in that betrayal realize that their actions directly led to the deaths of millions and they have been in denial and seeking to justify their actions ever since. This film is but another example of that attempt.
"This film is but another example of that attempt."
You didn't finish the sentence... ;-)
Essentially, it's another Michael Moore-type of film.
since they ALL look so silly, I didn't keep too many of THOSE...
