ACLU of Ohio says no to United Way funds

CLEVELAND (AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio said today it will no longer accept funding from the United Way so as not to complete a required counterterrorism compliance form.

Christine Link is ACLU of Ohio executive director. She says the decision won’t make much of a difference to the Cleveland-based nonprofit legal organization’s finances. It is not a United Way agency, but it can receive United Way funding if designated by donors.

Link estimated ACLU of Ohio receives about $10,000 a year from United Way. ACLU of Ohio’s annual budget is approximately 700-thousand dollars, mostly from individual donations.

At issue is a counterterrorism form the ACLU believes can be intrusive on individual liberties.

This is just one more on the list the ACLU has refused.

In October of 2004, the ACLU turned down $1.15 million in funding from two of it’s most generous and loyal contributors, the Ford and Rockefeller foundations, saying new anti-terrorism restrictions demanded by the institutions make it unable to accept their funds.

“The Ford Foundation now bars recipients of its funds from engaging in any activity that “promotes violence, terrorism, bigotry, or the destruction of any state.”

The Rockefeller Foundation’s provisions state that recipients of its funds may not “directly or indirectly engage in, promote, or support other organizations or individuals who engage in or promote terrorist activity.”

I've never liked the way the United Way collects money or the way they distribute money, but otherwise, they're a fine charity.

But aren't we finding out how flush this crowd is with cash? What a racket!

You can join the fight against the ACLU and their ilk by becoming involved with and supporting the following organizations:

American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) - http://www.aclj.org

The Rutherford Institute - http://www.rutherford.org/

Stop the ACLU Coalition - http://www.stoptheaclu.org

Here are a few examples of how two of those organizations are fighting back:

I guess I'm just suspicious by nature, but I very much doubt this.

When it comes to the ACLU, I'm skeptical about everything.

Not even.

ACLU: Destroying the Constitution in order to "save" it.

or more precisely...

Paying lip service to the Constitution in order to destroy it.

They won't sign the form because if they did so without
perjuring themselves, they'd end up in Club Gitmo.

The UW gives big bucks to eco-terrorist groups like the sierra club, earthshare, wilderness socialists etc and that really burns my hide.

I quit giving the UW ANY money after they cheated the boy scouts and now they are just another leftist socialist scam.

Interesting to see this so soon after it came to light that the Supreme Court of Florida was allowing the ACLU to collect the interest off all those judgments to fund itself.

Good reading and one for the files. There is a lot to know about the 52 state organizations and their different methods. For instance, in my Red rural state, they are actually the front and funnel for another major organization that does most of their work for them without showing the ACLU banner. And there is another non-profit that follows their course exactly, a proxy organization on civil rights that is mostly harmless or good at civil rights education.

The ACLU is a Hydra of an organization and is not as conveniently monolithic as, for instance, the RKBA outfits.

Actually, if you search on "Boy Scouts" and "United Way", you'll see numerous stories about local United Way chapters that are supporting their local Scouts. Only about 1 or 2% of local UW chapters are not supporting Scouting.

Exactly!

My first reaction after reading the article was...WTF?!

The ACLU is as non-deserving of an organization as I can think of to receive money thru the United Way.

This is the same ACLU that wants to dictate to the Boy Scouts to change their charter to its liking. I guess the ACLU has a different view of freedom of association when it comes to its own affairs than it does for others. More liberal hypocrisy on display.

I wonder if anyone has ever filed a Freedom of Information Act against the ACLU? I think that since they receive funds from the public, they should be liable, but I'm not sure...

While driving home a week or so ago, I was listening to BOR on the radio (a repeat of the show earlier in the day). Bill was talking about the ACLU and how he's going after them and those connected w them. A guy called in and said that the U Way's web site after 9/11 showed some of those funds going to the ACLU. Bill wasn't aware of this and asked his staff to research it. Said if it was true, he'd have it on his TV show. He would probably be interested in some of the items on this thread; and, since he seems somewhat passionate about the ACLU, he may be a good one to file the FIA. (Whether you like BOR or not, he has pounded on the ACLU, now and then).

"The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio said today it will no longer accept funding from the United Way so as not to complete a required counterterrorism compliance form."

That just says it all: you can't be in compliance with a requirement that forms the basis of your existence!

Maybe they should be prevented from taking any federal or state funding, as well as compensate victims of their frivolous lawsuits.
