WSJ: The Other War - The ACLU thinks cops are a bigger threat than terrorists.
opinionjournal.com ^ | August 11, 2005 | DOROTHY RABINOWITZ

Posted on 08/11/2005 5:09:54 AM PDT by OESY

...Among other lessons of 9/11, we have learned the cost of squeamishness that prevented closer scrutiny of young Arab men entering the country even when their behavior raised suspicions.... [A]n airline ticket-taker recalls being stunned by the strange look on the face of customer Mohamed Atta--particularly the unsettling fury the man exuded. Still, he could not bring himself to raise any alarm: indeed, when he heard later that the plane Atta was on had been one of those that crashed in the terror attacks, the agent felt terrible. Terrible because he had been suspicious of the passenger and thought he could be a terrorist and now the poor man was dead.... [and], in fact, hijacker-in-chief and pilot of the plane.

As the admirable Tony Blair is now discovering after announcing his determination that "multiculturalist concerns" will not be allowed to impede the struggle to rid his nation of terrorists, a thorny road lies ahead. Islamic civil rights organizations and others immediately warned that... his efforts would... "alienate" young Muslims....

Ethnic/racial profiling may not, in fact, work very well as a security strategy--but the frenzy of the attacks it has excited tells more.... Large numbers of citizens of every religion and ethnicity lost their lives in the terrorist attacks. Today, a strategy designed to help ensure that such a calamity will not again occur has been converted to a bizarre race-discrimination issue, subordinated to the concerns and ambitions of politicians. This won't, in the end, do much for the office-seekers and -holders now competing for the honor of delivering the most hysterical denunciations of ethnic and racial profiling. What, after all, can citizens (black and brown among them) think of leaders still prepared to argue that young Arab males receive no more scrutiny than the famous 80-year-old little grandmother...?

Where did you find those quates? Really good in showing th nature of this "peaceful" religion. If the west had left them alone they would be at war with themselves, even more than they are now.

If the west had left them alone, you're neighborhood might be an ash pile. That's stupid thinking.

> Where did you find those quotes?

They are at the beginning of Rabinowitz's column and bear repeating:

"Blood must flow. There must be widows, there must be orphans."--jihadist Fayiz Azzam addressing a gathering in Atlanta, 1990

"We conquer the land of the infidels, and we spread Islam by calling the infidels to Allah."--from a speech by Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman, outlining the plan for Islamic world rule, at an event sponsored by the Islamic Charity Project International, Detroit, 1991

Characterizing the war properly will put it in perspective. We are indeed at war with a theocracy. Their version of the future is in direct conflict with the God Given Rights our nation was founded on. Until we clearly define this enemy, we and the rest of the world will remain in this quagmire that is the Islamic Crusades. These islamic extremists are the voluntary militant foot soldiers of the mosque.

Mosque leaders have and are using our own PC rhetoric against us. We are twisting ourselves into the knots that bind our ability to deal with the enemy. It is not wrong for us to defend our nation from the tyranny of a theocratic regime, again that is one of the things our founding fathers fled among the many. It was also the motivation for declaring one of our Rights as that of Freedom of Religion.

The enemy would have us as Islamic and under the governance of Sharia law as soon as see the infidels killed. All mosques have this is a final goal, the establishment of an islamic nation on earth, the whole earth. That is the goal understood by each muslim and each muslim understands his own unique role in accomplishing the mission. Some are suicide bombers, some create the propaganda, some grow the food, some send the money, etc. We must understand the war is more than suicide bombers, the war is to protect one of our solemn Rights.

Islam is not a religion in our western sense of religion, we are better to call it a theocracy and each mosque is an outpost, embassy, and safe haven for the regime.

You are perhaps giving them way too much credit. And what I meant is that there is an incredible amount of internal turmoil between arabs in the middle east. If you know anything of middle eastern history you'd see what I was saying.

When I read Dorothy Rabinowitz's column this morning, I had the impression that she had picked up the ball...but didn't run with it. Yes, she gets fight to the heart of the matter--the NYCLU's interference in fighting this war on the domestic front, and the larger issue of profiling. Nevertheless, she avoids the tough questions: How can the ACLU be neutralized? What will it take to put profiling in place?

Hopefully, not another attack. But I'm afraid the terrorists are going to hit the subway before Bloomberg figures out what he's got to do.

Ms Lieberman would rather risk a few people getting blown up now and again as long as she is safe from the police accidentally finding her stash.

The real danger of terrorists is that they lead to an increasingly militarized and unbridled law enforcement body, which is the standing army our founders feared.

Good to see that Dorothy is still writing. Since dropping my subscription to the WSJ I hadn't seen Dorothy's writings -- wondered if she had retired.

Thanks.
