CINDY SHEEHAN - Very Interesting Background Information on Cindy and the company she keeps!

Antiwar extremist Cindy Sheehan has captured headlines by camping out in front of President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. There, the 48-year-old founder of Gold Star Families for Peace claims she is hounding the president to end the Iraq War in the name of her beloved son, Casey, who died in Iraq, and in the name of grieving families everywhere. The image of a grief-stricken mother traveling by caravan from California to Texas, then living in a tent, merely so she can have a brief meeting with the president has deep propaganda value for the antiwar Left. Thus, the New York Times noted longingly in its headline Thursday, "One Mother's Loss Becomes a Problem for the President." However, none of the mainstream media accounts of this beatified mourner recognize her long history of extremist rhetoric, her close association with far-Left and anti-Semitic figures, or the way she has seemingly rewritten her own history when it suited her purposes.

Sheehan says if granted a (second) consultation with President George W. Bush, she wants to ask him, "Why did you kill my son?" Both the question and the blame are misplaced. Sheehan and the media have emphasized that Iraqis killed 24-year-old Casey Sheehan in Sadr City last April, just five days after his arrival in Iraq. Cindy Sheehan's tale of motherly grief is gripping. She told the leftist blog Buzzflash:

Casey told me, "Mom, this is what we trained for. I'm ready. It's my job. Because the sooner I get there, the sooner I'll come home." And he came home three weeks later in a flag-draped coffin.

However, the media have ignored two important facts. First, Casey initially signed up in May 2000 and voluntarily re-enlisted in the service in August 2003, knowing he would likely be called into active duty in Iraq. Secondly, as a mechanic in the 1st battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, Casey did not have to go into the battle that claimed his life. When some of his fellow soldiers encountered resistance, he and others in his unit chose to go into combat to save his friends. Cindy Sheehan herself recounted it this way:

"
[T]he sergeant said, "Sheehan, you don't have to go," because my son was a mechanic. And Casey said, "Where my chief goes, I go."

Where this young man went, tragically, was to an early grave. But his death was an act of patriotism and human compassion, one which should tinge her understandable maternal grief with deep pride.

Instead, Cindy Sheehan threw herself into shrill, anti-Bush and anti-American activism. Shortly after his death, she founded Gold Star Families for Peace, an "antiwar" group whose first stated purpose is "To bring an end to the occupation of Iraq." (Emphasis added.) She presently has a blogspot on MichaelMoore.com and spouts extremist rhetoric alongside many of the Hate America Left's most potent bomb-throwers.

A Legacy of Leftist Anger

One might speculate that her son's death freed Cindy Sheehan to take a more prominent role in stating the convictions she long held. Her hatred of President George W. Bush apparently harkens back to well before her son ever set foot in Iraq. In "An Open Letter to President George Bush," published in the Not In Our Name newsletter shortly after the 2004 presidential elections, she wrote:

"
George, in 2000 when you stole that election and the Democrats gave up, I gave up, too. I had the most ironic thought of my life then: "Oh well, how much damage can he do in four years?"

A
ccording to San Francisco-based talk show host (and acquaintance of the Sheehan family) Melanie Morgan, Cindy Sheehan's antiwar animus dates to well before her son's death.[1] The Sheehans always opposed U.S. involvement in Iraq. Asked about the views she and her husband, Pat, had toward the Iraq War before their son's deployment, she answered: "We didn't understand why the United States was there. We never thought that Iraq was an imminent threat to the United States."

S
he has taken advantage of her status as an aggrieved mother to spread her poisonous brand of far-Left politics. Her natural target was the Iraq War. Sheehan testified at John Conyers' "impeachment hearings" on June 16, regarding the Downing Street Memo. She said, "The so-called Downing Street Memo dated 23 July, 2003, only confirms what I already suspected: the leadership of this country rushed us into an illegal invasion of another sovereign country on prefabricated and cherry picked intelligence. It appears that my boy Casey was given a death sentence even before he joined the Army in May of 2000." To be sure no one missed the point, she added, "I believed before our leaders invaded Iraq in March, 2003, and I am even more convinced now, that this aggression on Iraq was based on a lie of historic proportions and was blatantly unnecessary."

However, she has branched out into denouncing the military and the United States itself. According to FPM contributor Lee Kaplan, Sheehan likened convicted terrorist lawyer Lynne Stewart to literary hero Atticus Finch at a rally at San Francisco State University. Stewart passed on messages from convicted 1993 World Trade Center bomber Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman to his terror cell in Egypt and often pledged her belief in the morality of anti-capitalist violence. According to Kaplan's account, Sheehan's rhetoric that evening could as easily have been written by the "Blind Sheikh" himself; she, too, regarded America as the "Great Satan": "America has been killing people on this continent since it was started. This country is not worth dying for."

She furthered this belief with a pronouncement on her official website, in which she describes her vision of a utopian future in America: "I will rejoice to hear the sounds of the collective Mea Culpa and the beating of breasts."

To deprive this evil empire of a sufficient military, Cindy endorsed the San Francisco citywide measure known as "College Not Combat," which would encourage the city's high schools to deny military recruiters access to their student directories, from which they seek military enlistments. The fact that the cause she championed in the name of "the children" would be a violation of section 9528 of the "No Child Left Behind" Act, an infraction punishable by the revocation of federal education funds, did not cause her or her ideological comrades to bat an eye. The "College Not Combat" coalition includes a host of socialist and anti-American organizations, including International ANSWER, Code Pink, the National Lawyers Guild, the International Socialist Organization, Socialist Organizer, the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (which hails convicted cop-killers as "political prisoners"), and others. Such left-wing organizers often speak of the need to reduce the number of young people joining the armed forces, in order to frustrate "imperialist" U.S. foreign policy.

One such radical leftist is Medea Benjamin, the founder of Code Pink, Global Exchange, and the mastermind behind the violent anti-World Trade Center riots in Seattle. Benjamin enjoys a close working relationship with Cindy Sheehan as part of the professional antiwar fringe. Medea, a longtime admirer of Fidel Castro, with the help of fellow Castroite Leslie Cagan, founded the International Occupation Watch. Established in the city of Baghdad during the height of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Benjamin said its stated goal was to get as many U.S. troops as possible to declare themselves conscientious objectors and be sent home. Through Code Pink, she even managed to take $600,000 of cash, medicine, and supplies to "the other side" in the Iraqi terrorist capital of Fallujah (possibly the whereabouts of Casey Sheehan's murderers). In an essay in Nation magazine, Benjamin spelled out a long-term strategy to deflate the U.S. military presence in Iraq and around the world.

Benjamin's anti-American foreign policy views are seemingly shared by Kathy Kelly, with whom Cindy shared the stage during antiwar protests. Kelly is the Director of Voices in the Wilderness, which violated UN sanctions against Saddam Hussein's Iraq in the 1990s. Kelly visits "political prisoners" held captive by the United States…in Iraq. She has spoken at numerous campuses, often with radical Islamists, and has supported the Nicaraguan Sandanistas. In late 2003, Kelly received a three-month sentence for trespassing at Ft. Benning, Georgia, during a massive protest against the anti-Communist "School of the Americas."

David Fenton has been laying the propaganda groundwork the Left needs to justify its anti-American policies for nearly a generation. A one-time photographer for the Weathermen, a left-wing terrorist organization, as well as a partisan calling for the "liberation" of South Vietnam, Fenton went on to angle the U.S. media on behalf of the Nicaraguan Sandanistas and the Marxist regime of Grenada. Fenton Communications was soon enlisted to popularize the George Soros-funded MoveOn.org and the Win Without War Coalition. In 2004, Cindy Sheehan appeared in an anti-Bush TV commercial, paid for by a 527 group known as "Real Voices," which were distributed by…Fenton Communications. Coincidentally, David Fenton also promotes the September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, another organization of left-wingers making political capital from the death of their loved ones.

Fenton is not Sheehan's only public relations conduit. Her statements are also distributed by the Institute for Public Accuracy, the organization that sponsored Sean Penn's trip to Baghdad on the eve of war. The day after September 11th, this taxpayer-funded entity offered "expert" testimony on terrorism to credulous media outlets. One IPA-sanctioned spokesman said Osama bin Laden's handiwork "holds up a mirror to U.S. policy of causing massive civilian suffering in Iraq…[W]e hope that along with the grief, we can…form deeper compassion and understanding." The IPA is a member organization of United for Peace and Justice, the "mainstream" face of the antiwar movement, which held many of the major antiwar demonstrations in 2003 and was founded by…Communist Party member Leslie Cagan.

It appears Sheehan embraces the anti-American views of the far-Left, possibly even advocating that soldiers disobey their officers. An online interview reveals that after defining "supporting war and killing" as "anti-Gospel, anti-religion, and anti-Christ," she told American troops they were being "misused," and finally exhorted them: "Refuse to kill innocent people." Yet no U.S. officer can legitimately order someone to kill "innocent people"; it seems she has joined Medea Benjamin and Leslie Cagan's crusade to mint ranks of conscientious objectors who will study (anti-terror) war no more.

Blame the "Murderous Thugs" (Jews)

Sheehan does not just lay the blame for her son's death on evil America, though. She recently wrote: "my first born was murdered. Am I angry? Yes, he was killed for lies and for a PNAC Neo-Con agenda to benefit Israel. My son joined the Army to protect America, not Israel." Such rhetoric echoes the line being taken by David Duke and his ilk at their most recent recruiting website, NoWarForIsrael.com: neo-cons run foreign policy; neo-cons are Jews; therefore, the war on Iraq was cooked up by a "cabal" of rapacious Jews to benefit the nation of Israel.

Sheehan also applies dehumanizing rhetoric to "neo-con" officials in the Bush administration. In an antiwar speech this April, Sheehan said of a well-known Jewish conservative, "As soft-spoken and sincere-sounding as Paul Wolfowitz is, is there yet any sane adult in this country whose skin does not crawl when this murderous liar opens his mouth and speaks?" She fumed, "Our country has been overtaken by murderous thugs....gangsters who lust after fortunes and power." It is possible her target is "merely" capitalism. But her vicious rhetoric leaves open the possibility that she makes room at her altar of hatred for Jews, as well.

Take the Left's Bus to Crawford

This extremism has not kept Cindy Sheehan from becoming an overnight star, endowed with all the righteous mysteries of suffering motherhood. Nor has her rhetoric and continued association with fringe figures barred her from enjoying the fellowship of the larger Left. After she began her multi-week camp out near the president's ranch, legendary leftist agitator Ralph Nader dispatched a letter declaiming, "This rogue regime, led by two draft-dodgers and officially counseled by similar pro-war evaders during the Vietnam War, is not 'our country.'"

Former Howard Dean presidential campaign strategist Joe Trippi made an appearance in the flesh. Trippi joined with Jodie Evans and the website Democrats.com to produce a web broadcast hailing Sheehan. (You can listen to it here. N.B.: Cindy, like, totally sounds like she's from Vacaville.)

In this podcast, Sheehan's venomous vacuity is on display in its every facet. She intimated the Secret Service might have murdered had she not placed a notice with the blogosphere, saying the Secret Service told her she would get run over by a car if she stayed there. "Thank God for the internet, or…we would already be a fascist state," she foreswore. "The mainstream media is a propaganda tool for the government." Sheehan likewise derided "the elections, um, you know the 'elections' quote/unquote, that happened in November."

Then came the callers. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, D-IL, who described herself as a member of the "Out-of-Iraq Coalition," called in for the broadcast. Rep. Schakowsky, a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, gushed, "I'm just so proud of you…My heart is with you." (Schakowsky, like Medea Benjamin, gushes over Fidel Castro, as well; Schakowsky has consistently tried to ease travel restrictions to the island gulag. For these and other "progressive" efforts, Schakowsky received an award from the Democratic Socialists of America.)

Sheehan also received a question from "journalist" Greg Szymanski, who has covers Sheehan for the ArcticBeacon.com and the American Free Press. According to its website, ArcticBeacon.com is dedicated, in part, to covering the "Alien Presence on Earth and UFO Phenomena." American Free Press is the newest incarnation of THE SPOTLIGHT newspaper, which the Anti-Defamation League classifies as "the most widely read publication on the fringe Right." Both were published by Willis Carto's Liberty Lobby, an organization with ties to neo-Nazism and anti-Semitism that is "presently the most influential right-wing extremist propaganda organization in the United States." Szymanski has written numerous articles for the publication, including one hinting President Bush was complicit in 9/11

Perhaps this constellation of anti-American extremists explains her blog entry for Day 5: "We had a little bit of trouble with locals today. We are beginning to feel a little unwelcome here."

Bush Far Too Amenable

Despite the fact that Cindy Sheehan and an entourage of 50 rolled into town in a bus with the words "Impeachment Tour" emblazoned upon it - fresh from attending a Veterans for Peace convention, no less - the Bush administration has not given this odd woman an icy reception. National Security Adviser Steve Hadley and Deputy White House Chief of Staff Joe Hagin spoke with Sheehan for 45 minutes.

This high-level (and unwarranted) meeting has not satisfied Sheehan's leftist friends. Code Pink founder Diane Wilson is leading a hunger strike until Bush meets with her in person…for a second time. The website AfterDowningStreet.org also demands a face-to-face meeting. That website's coalition members include Code Pink, Global Exchange, Rainbow/PUSH, Louisiana Activist Network, the Earth Island Institute, Historians Against the War, Veterans for Peace, Radio Left, and others. Notable individuals offering their support to the website include Daniel Ellsberg, of Pentagon Papers infamy; Robert Shetterly; and Joel Wendland, Managing Editor of Political Affairs, a journal of the Communist Party USA.

And some 40 Congressional Democratic have signed a letter urging President Bush to meet Sheehan, as well. Among its signatories: Reps. George Miller, Barbara Lee, Zoe Lofgren, Mike Honda, Lynn Woolsey,  and Pete Stark (all those listed, Democrats from California).

The Second Time Around

As noted, Cindy Sheehan already met with Bush last June, two months after Casey's death, along with a delegation of grieving military families. After that meeting, Sheehan initially said President Bush was caring, and the two spoke of their deep religious convictions. "I now know he's sincere about wanting freedom for the Iraqis," Cindy declared. "I know he's sorry and feels some pain for our loss. And I know he's a man of faith." She says she and her husband thought about broaching their discontent with the war but held back out of respect for what they thought their late son would have wanted. She instead enjoyed the commiseration of the also-bereaved. She concluded by saying, "That was the gift the president gave us, the gift of happiness, of being together."

Sheehan has begun telling another tale in recent days. During her podcast this week, Sheehan told Greg Szymanski, "Your account, that you wrote, is a true one." In one of Szymanski's two identical accounts, Cindy Sheehan claimed during their visit President Bush was "acting cocky and it was probably one of the worst experiences in my entire life." He bounced around the room in a jovial manner. Szymanski quotes Sheehan as saying her 25-year-old daughter, Carley, "told me that after he made [a] remark, he gave her one of the filthiest looks she had ever had gotten in her life." And, she says, Cindy was not alone; every other family felt this, as well. Cindy sums up: "Looking back, all I can say is that the meeting with Bush was one of the most disgusting experiences in my life." (She also referred to President Bush as the "Führer" and called the War on Terrorism "blatant genocide.")

When asked to rectify these varying statements - which, for the most part, she isn't - Sheehan said she was "still in shock" when she met President Bush in 2004 and could not recount her horrible ordeal properly for nearly a year after the fact.

Despite the fact that she has apparently lied about one of their meetings already, and despite the fact that she willingly forfeited the right to raise the subject of politics with him, President Bush took a conciliatory tone in a press conference Thursday. In a move that was both compassionate and politically brilliant - a suspension this president has proven adept at mixing - he told the press

"
I sympathize with Mrs. Sheehan. She feels strongly about her position, and she has every right in the world to say what she believes. This is America. She has a right to her position, and I thought long and hard about her position. I've heard her position from others, which is: Get out of Iraq now. And it would be a mistake for the security of this country and the ability to lay the foundations for peace in the long run if we were to do so."

To do so, he rightly noted, "would send a terrible signal to the enemy." President Bush noted the sympathy he feels for anyone who has lost a loved one in a war. (I believe that in Bush, unlike his predecessor, this feeling is genuine; this president is notorious for offering glimpses of his deep-seated emotions, especially around the military.) He has stated that he understands her political position, has given it due consideration (which should have been three seconds), and concluded it is not in the best interests of the country. Thus, he can show the country he has no need to meet with this quite sympathetic character who is sleeping in a pup tent in the Texas summer heat for several weeks. It is a beautiful political maneuver - far more eloquent than Moonbats of Sheehan and Medea Benjamin's ilk deserve.

Disavowal

The fact that Cindy Sheehan has used her son's coffin as a political soapbox has not set well with many members of Sheehan's extended family. In a backlash, patriotic members of Casey's father's family have distanced themselves and their late, heroic relative from Cindy's anti-American ways. KSFO-AM radio talk show host and Move America Forward leader Melanie Morgan received the following e-mail from Cherie Quarterolo, the late Casey Sheehan's aunt and godmother, and is sent on behalf of Casey Sheehan's family:

Hello again Melanie,

Our family has been so distressed by the recent activities of Cindy we are breaking our silence and we have collectively written a statement for release. Feel free to distribute it as you wish. Thanks - Cherie.

In response to questions regarding the Cindy Sheehan/Crawford Texas issue: Sheehan Family Statement:

The Sheehan Family lost our beloved Casey in the Iraq War and we have been silently, respectfully grieving. We do not agree with the political motivations and publicity tactics of Cindy Sheehan. She now appears to be promoting her own personal agenda and notoriety at the expense of her son's good name and reputation. The rest of the Sheehan Family supports the troops, our country, and our President, silently, with prayer and respect.

Sincerely,
Casey Sheehan's grandparents, aunts, uncles and numerous cousins.

Thank goodness someone in the Sheehan family puts family, country, and dignity above political motivation. At last we see where Casey got the heroic sense of duty and patriotism that led him to lay down his life for his friends. R.I.P.

ENDNOTES:1. I was privileged to be a guest on "The Lee Rodgers and Melanie Morgan Show" on KSFO-AM on Thursday morning, when Melanie read the e-mail from Casey Sheehan's aunt. She noted Cindy Sheehan's long opposition to the president's foreign policy at that time.

If you go back to the A-10 suicidal crash (out of Tucson) back in the early 90s...that Air Force Captain was a product of a very similiar family. The minute he finished college and joined the Air Force as a pilot...his religious conviction mother got all hyper and constantly "harass" him about that. When he finished pilot school...because he was a very capable trainer...they kept him there strictly as a trainer of the A-10 aircraft. His mom cooled slightly after that...but when he eventually got his first unit assignment...to be sent overseas and possibly drop bombs...she got extreme on him getting out. Her pressure eventually got him to the point where he committed suicide. The Air Force was very careful at the end when they wrote the entire report. They didn't say that parental pressure was stressed upon the guy...but it was obvious that she constantly made this issue number one.

I think Casey would be greatly upset at this entire episode now. This is not the kind of thing you'd want to see. Its both sad and tragic that this woman has lost total grasp of reality and lives in some dreamworld. And its even more sad that CNN sits there and attempting to make a story out out of this.

I just saw Cindy on TV next to a giant IVAW banner. The IVAW is an offshoot of the VVAW which is the communist leaning/supported group that John Kerry was involved in. Remeber Winter Soldier? Same people helped set up IVAW. Maybe we can call this Summer Soldier.

Here is an old swiftvet post about the passing of the torch from VVAW to IVAW. If anyone has a way to get a screen save from Anderson Coopers show tonight that shows the picture of Sheehan next to the IVAW banner , I would be appreciative.

Taken from www.Swiftvets.com-

While researching the VVAW & Kerry, I came across a website for Jan Barry and then followed various threads that led to this hasty post. Sorry for the length, but I have cut it down as much as I can, it being after midnight and I’m out of steam….. This is but a cursory look at the new anti-America propaganda machine, same people/same plan (same logo) -- seems they are after our young soldiers now and out to cause another US surrender if they can. Need military personnel, families and friends to discuss the IVAW & VAIW with our soldiers, active and inactive, and to warn them about the true nature of these organizations. Need a blitz of info. and hard work to counteract this destructive and dangerous movement. [Please note that I have no problem with any civilian or soldier being a pacifist, protesting war and/or being against U.S. military intervention anywhere for any reason. Just want our soldiers to be informed about just who these people really are so they know what they are getting into and what they might be doing to America by helping these people…]

(NOTE: The article "Vets Pass Torch at High Ground Reunion in NYC" is at the end of this post, after data on 'Stephen Noetzel')

Quick view of some info pulled regarding IVAW (Iraq Veterans Against the War) which has “received the torch” from Kerry’s old VVAW (Vietnam Vets Against the War) and from the newer VAIW (Vets Against the Iraq War). See other posts for more info on the VVAW - basically far-left with connections to communist groups; anti-war; anti-US military intervention in the world (US deemed “imperalist”); anti-capitalist; seditious - met with and planned US surrender regarding Vietnam; held many WSIs in the 70s to prove US soldiers war criminals due to US policy; etc… - and now they are after our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and setting up new WSIs and anti-war demonstrations. Their old method was to be helpful, to befriend vets on active duty and in processing them out -- to be around to help soldiers with discharge papers, medical claims, place to stay, etc, and work on brainwashing them against the gov’t., get them to join the org., feed them propaganda against our gov’t. Same people, & might be same plan... [all emphasis/abbrev. used in below data are mine]

I have found some old-time VVAW names & others, involved now with VAIW & IVAW:
--Jan Barry (Jan Barry Crumb)
--Joe Bangert
--David Cline
--William Crandell
--Daniel Ellsberg
--Michael Hoffman
--Bobby Muller (Mueller?)
--Stephen S. Noetzel
--Barry Romo

Note that the old organization, the VVAW (Vietnam Veterans Against the War), Kerry's old group, is still alive and well today and associated with those listed below. This post is primarily about the 2 new organizations, since 9/11:

Quick Reference on the two new organizations which involve people from the old VVAW:

(1) “VAIW” - Veterans Against the Iraq War WEBSITE--Google VAIW.org and you get “VAIW: Vets Against the Iraq War,” -donations payable to same.
--CONTACTS: David Cline, Barry Romo, Jan Barry, etal (Cline & Romo are also VVAW contacts)
--The “Pass the Torch” to IVAW rally article (last item on this post below) is posted at the VAIW website.
--Some Links at this site: IVAW (Hoffman); Veterans For Peace (“VFP”- Cline); VVAW (Cline, Romo); “Bring Them Home Now” (Cline- VFP)
--Endorsers list is 11p long, included are: Cline, Bangert, Ellsberg, Barry, Romo, Vazquez

(2) “IVAW” - Iraq Veterans Against the War WEBSITE
--Google IVAW.net and you get “Mission: Iraq Vets Against the War,” -- donations payable to “Veterans for Peace” with IVAW in memo line (Note: Cline is Pres. of VFP and is contact at VVAW & VAIW)
--CONTACTS: Michael Hoffman, Ivan Medina, etal
--IVAW appears to be a separate entity (specifically: Vets from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom) with ties to VFP. Note that the IVAW was with the VVAW and VAIW at the “pass the torch” rally -- so these 3 groups are all associated (Cline being in all 3).
--Some Links at this site: “Not in Our Name-GI Special” (this is Urgo, VVAW-AI (anti-imperalist)-- the group “warned against” at the VVAW website. This particular link provides our troops with severe anti-US propaganda); Vets For Peace (Cline); VVAW (Cline, Romo, etal).
--No endorsers list
--Note that the VAIW is NOT a link at IVAW.

Activities start before the Iraq War: Complete Press Release, a portion of which is shown below: SOURCE

VETERANS AGAINST IRAQ WAR
PRESS RELEASE: IMMEDIATE -- DATE: MARCH 18, 2003
ELLSBERG, MULLER, VETS TO LEAD TEACH-IN AT AM. UNIV. IN NATION'S CAPITAL

Daniel Ellsberg of Pentagon Papers fame, Bobby Muller, a leader in the Vietnam Veterans community…under the sponsorship of the Veterans Against Iraq War Coalition will lead and conduct a "Teach-In" on the impending war in Iraq at American University in the Nation's Capital, Saturday, March 22…… According to David Cline, Nat’l. Pres. of the Veterans For Peace, "The most important decision that our elected officials can make is to send our troops to war… The voice of America's veterans who have fought in past wars must be heard on this issue"…

Couple of facts about: JAN BARRY CRUMB, now known as “JAN BARRY”
--1967: founder of VVAW; moderator at WSI in Detroit, Jan/Feb 1971.
--2004: attended "pass the torch" to IVAW rally
--2004: listed as contact at VAIW website
--2004: has his own website. Below is portion of a ltr (& I did some abbrev.) that I pulled from the “Discussion” section of his website regarding a reunion of Kerry and his VVAW folk - you can go to the website to see the full letter--I put a lot of it here, but there is much more (I think ltr refers to March 2004):

Jan Barry website - “Discussion” section, scroll down to find: LINK

“Dear Jan, I just returned from campaigning on behalf of former VVAW member and MA JR. SENATOR JOHN KERRY in NH… It also included over a half dozen men whom Kerry served with on Swift Boats up the Mekong… Cape vet, Kerry renew ties by Jack Coleman staff writer. Delivering his victory speech in NH Tues. night, U.S. Sen. John Kerry said he was indebted to a specific group around him on stage. "In the hardest moments of the past month, I depended on the same band of brothers I depended on more than 30 years ago," said Kerry, with his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, beside him. "We're a little older now, a little grayer, but we still know how to fight for our country. "And if I am president, I pledge that those who wore the uniform of the United States of America will have a voice and a champion in the Oval Office."

A few feet away, wearing the Marine Corps cap he has owned since serving in Vietnam, stood Brewster resident JOSEPH BANGERT [see below] - one of the proverbial boys in the band. Back on the Cape, Bangert's twin brother, John, was watching Kerry's televised speech … "I think that John (Kerry) never forgot his friends and last night was an indication of that," John Bangert said yesterday.

Joe Bangert, 55, a decorated Marine who met Kerry in 1970 after both became activists against the war, spent five days working as a volunteer in Kerry's campaign. Bangert returned home yesterday... "I woke up this morning and I noticed all these guys my age were putting their military hats and jackets on," Bangert said… Kerry's candidacy holds potential as "catharsis for the Vietnam generation," he said. Bangert, of the Veterans for Kerry contingent, said Kerry has drawn together a formidable coalition of veterans, past and current anti-war activists & even some conservatives disenchanted with President Bush. What they share, Bangert said, is anger at Bush and the federal gov’t for cuts in veterans services and doubts that things will improve under the current commander-in-chief. Bangert …may rejoin the campaign with other veterans heading to SC from Boston this weekend….Anybody have ideas? SC for a long weekend sounds mighty fine to me. Yippie! Joe (Dioxin) Bangert!

Mon. night at 10, Kerry returned to campaign headquarters in Manchester for a final rally before the primary. Kerry spotted Bangert and called out his name, then embraced him. VVAW-70-73 (Deserted at Wounded Knee) branded and banished. VVA -1980-1986 National Board of Directors… former member the MGen Smedley Butler USMC Brigade, and Boston Chapt of VFP - 1987-1990 Owner of Cafe 1945- Hanoi, 1995-1996, founder of SE Asia Airlines Vietnam- USA based in Hanoi 1992-1997. Snuffie since then again. I hear the Clash- 'Should I stay or should I go'? No money…. Hoa Binh send money and suggestions, Love, GI Joe”

Couple facts about JOE BANGERT: former VVAW.
--9/07/70: With Kerry/Fonda at Operation RAW (Rapid American Withdrawal), Valley Forge, PA
--1/31/71: Testified at WSI: “..the men were afraid to complain about such atrocities because those who complained were subject to harsh discipline by company commanders.”

Complete article: “Vets Pass Torch at High Ground Reunion in NYC” - by Stephen S. Noetzel - 9/7/04 SOURCE

Quote:
ABBREV. PORTIONS OF ARTICLE (emphasis, mine):

The PAST (Sunday Reunion #1, 8/29/04.): Funny how most of them haven’t changed all that much in over 30 yrs. “on the barricades"… Despite having grown “rotund”, most of the Grizzled Vets still managed to squeeze into the remnants of the bestraggled uniform “artifacts” they had saved for important Protest Events, for many years, even decades… The same stuff they wore when they took over the Mall, in Washington DC, in the spring of ’71 when they emerged as the heroes of the Anti-War movement. The Vietnam Veterans Against the War.

And I was right there with them. Wearing my wool Green Beret; modified only slightly, to announce my Political Stance while at the same time stopping the beads of sweat trying to roll off my now bald head. Instead of the regulation Special Forces Patch that originally commanded attention directly over the left eye, there was a round Veterans for Peace “Patch”, splashed with the red/yellow colors of Vietnam; yet held in place by my original 5th Special Forces Pin with its swaggering Logo-Phrase written in Ironic Latin: “De Oppresso Liber”. Liberator of the Oppressed, my a**. Like all of the Old Experienced Ones who have been through the fires of the Anti War struggles for decades, I knew better.

So we marshaled .. for One Last Parade. For 2 hours we waited at the head of the “Line of March”, while politicians and celebrities made speeches in front of us, and a half million Protestors against the Bush War Machine gathered behind us. We carried our signs aloft: IRAQ is ARABIC for VIETNAM. Vietnam Veterans Against the War – AGAIN! Vietnam Vets Action Plan: Job 1; Fire BUSH; Job 2: EXIT IRAQ. And mine: Vietnam Vets for Kerry – LOVED him in ’71; Support him in ’04

..As the Line of March “stepped off” at noon, one could read it all in the eyes of the spectators pressed to the far side of the barricades. From the under 40 crowd; “Wow…Cool… Look at Those Guys”. From the other side of 40, a somber closed-mouth slight nodding of the head. Déjà vu, all over again. But there WAS something new “walking point” at the very head of the parade. Carried by a small squad of clean-cut YOUNG American men, their signature banner read: IRAQ VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR! …. the young band of Veterans of “Operation Iraqi Freedom” strode forward with the Military Posture & the serious faces that only hinted at the courage required to make their Statement. But make it they did “in spades” for all the world to see. We were proud to march behind them. For us, they represented the very soul of our life-long sentiment; articulated anew. We marched the Parade Route together. Two Generations; One message: Peace. NOW!..

They pulled the rumpled handbills from their pockets, and re-read their “orders”. VETS REUNION at SUMMIT ROCK; 1700 hours in Central Park! LET’S TAKE THE HIGH GROUND! This INVITATION goes out primarily to ALL the VVAW troops but also just as warmly to Vets for Peace, VVA, Citizen Soldiers COs, Deserters, Just Plain Ole’ Vets, Vet Groupies, & most assuredly to members/Potential Members of the (brand New) IRAQ VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR….Shall we TAKE THE HIGH GROUND together?

The PRESENT (Sunday Reunion #2): Truth be told, no one knew if anyone would show. It was WAY uptown. ..By 5:15pm there were 85 of us.. “Where you in from?” Mpls, IA, Seattle, SF, PA, NJ, Upstate NY, Brooklyn. The Old Guard comparing notes. “Were you at Dewey Canyon III in D.C. ?” “Sure was, but I had long hair back then”. “Were you in the Hearing Room with Kerry when he testified before Senator Fulbright?” “Negative…I was still in The Nam. Got back in ’72 and joined VVAW as soon as I got back to The World”.

..the inevitable Speech…. one grizzled ex-Marine climbs a shelf-rock and yells out “Let’s hear it for IRAQ VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR!”. Joe goes on to cite the Announcement of the Founding of IVAW… “7/24/04, in Boston MA!” “Come on up here Mike, and say a few words”. This call interrupts a historic moment, taking place just a few yards away. Mike Hoffman, founder of Iraq Veterans Against the war, is engaged in quiet conversation, with the ever understated Jan Barry, founder of Vietnam Veterans Against the War. The Passing of the Torch. Then Mike is up on stage… introducing addn’l. members of IVAW, and thanking the Vietnam Vets for their Inspiration and Mentorship. Each of the New Vets takes their turn at “a few words for the brothers”.. “Just like you guys”, says one, “we are growing like wildfire because, like yours, our leadership has failed us, and our cause is JUST”. “Just like you guys”, says another, “we answered The Bell, and did our job. Now it’s time for THEM to do right by US!”.

Dave Cline says a few words to define the Moment. Like many old Vietnam Vets, he recognized long ago, that the Invasion of Iraq had DEEP parallels with our sad mis-adventure in Vietnam. For starters, yet another immoral, illegal war. He’s been working tirelessly since the very start of the Bombing of Baghdad, to bring the collective experience of VVAW to the grunts in uniform, doing the dirty work of our Government, in the heat, and sand, and chaos, that is Iraq. “The torch is being passed”, says Dave. “Right here, Right now, my long-time dream is coming true, and the Torch is being PASSED!”. A mighty cheer arises in Central Park….“That doesn’t mean your job is done.” He shouts to the Old Vets within earshot. “You’re not ‘Retired’ yet! ..We are Still in Service, & we need to continue to support these guys, and ALL the troops still over there, and Bring them back Alive… and Right NOW!” Dave closed his remarks with a call for a Moment of Silence for the Fallen. The Extended Line of Fallen. From Vietnam to Iraq. The warriors doing their job for Dubious Leaders, cowering in safety. The civilian populations, who couldn’t find safe haven. In that moment of silence, the Torch was being passed.

A few more vets said a few more words. A Vietnam Vet from San Francisco told everyone about how the IVAW movement was growing on the West Coast, and how Seasoned Vets were mentoring Iraq vets back there. A few words were spoken by Parents of Troops in Iraq right now. Anxious words that promised to swell the ranks of these new Winter Soldiers. if they can only make it back home, alive. To close the Reunion, the assembled vets huddled together, young and old… The Torch won’t be visible in those photos, but it sure as hell was there. You had to be there, to FEEL it being passed from one generation to another.

By 7:30pm the High Ground Reunion was breaking up…and there was still one more Reunion to attend…..tonight. The FUTURE (Sunday Reunion #3): The final Vets & Friends contingent re-assembled at 9pm; back again in Lower Manhattan. A young crowd lined the sidewalk outside Joes Pub in the Park… at New York’s famous Public Theatre, at Astor Place. It was to be a Concert for Peace, presented by a cooperative of many artists, performing during the week, to raise funds for numerous groups dedicated to Peace, and Regime Change in the US of A.

Tonight, Singer-Songwriter Stephan Smith was performing to raise funds for IRAQ VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR. ….After these introductory songs, Stephan introduced VVAW leader Dave Cline, who in turn introduced THREE of the Founding Members of IVAW. Primary founder Michael Hoffman, took the stage, along with xxxxx, and xxxxxx. The audience grew stone quiet as Mike told the story of his Introduction to Iraq. “The truest words I’ve ever heard”, he said were told to him and his Marine platoon, on the night before they embarked for their Mission in Iraq. Hoffman recalled the speech almost verbatim: “I want you guys to know why we’re going over there and why we’re NOT going over there”, said his battle seasoned Platoon Sergeant. “I want you all to get this straight. We are NOT going over there to get Saddam Hussein. We are NOT going over there for Regime Change or to ‘Free’ the people of Iraq”. “We are NOT going over there to capture Weapons of Mass Destruction. There are none, and we won’t find any. Marines, we are going to Iraq for one reason, and one reason only. and THAT reason is OIL.”…

After his introductory “bombshell”, Hoffman passed the microphone to another young vet… The casualties we took were not about our commitment to Watching our Buddies Backs but more about a lack of overall protection by the command structure above us.” The third young vet put the “lock” on the argument. “We want it to be perfectly clear to all. By forming IRAQ VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR… we are not turning our backs on our Contract, OR our Mission. Quite the contrary. By telling our story of a War Gone Wrong… we are STILL covering the backs of our buddies… by calling for an immediate end to the Occupation, and the safe return of each and every precious life…”

The presentation could have ended right there…but there was a live telephone hook-up…from yet another Veteran of Iraq, who wanted to tell his story, to the 250 people gathered at the Pub. ..everyone could hear XXXXXX loud and clear…..”. The evening went on… the concert continued. Stephan sang “Slash and Burn”, and more. We must help these brave young men carry the torch of truth. We must help them complete their Mission. We must stop the carnage, and bring their comrades home to safety.

It is both sad and tragic at the same time. But, there is something nefarious about the company Cindy keeps.

I just read an article about her. It is far from flattering, and actually scary. Her list of "friends and associates" is a litany of far left wing groups, Marxists, and America haters. She is associated with these groups LONG before Casey went to Iraq.

It seems as if she's had an agenda all along!!

I did too, but apparently I caught a "sensitive" mod on duty at the time. We have all seen worse on FR, but it ain't my call.

After reading this article I am convinced that this traitor never really grieved a moment for Casey; instead she probably thought he got just what he deserved for serving what she viewed and views as an evil cause. After all, there are many parents who would not grieve if a reprobate son was killed perpetrating one of a series of home invasions. This is how Cindy probably viewed Casey.

Now she fraudulently, loudly, and lugubriously "grieves" about his death every time a TV camera is pointed at her, just like Bill Clinton "grieving" over Ron Brown's death. Even more vile, she's crassly appropriated Casey's heroic death and twisted it to attack everything he honorably stood for. In effect, as a way to express her real hatred for him and get posthumous revenge on him for his patriotism, she's installed a toilet on top of his grave, copiously used it herself, and invited thousands of other traitors to do the same. Utterly contemptible.

Well, I can't go so far as to say that she did not mourn her own son's loss at all. I will say that what she is now doing and trying to pass off as grief has is in fact nothing to do with respectful or loving grief for that loss and is one of the most despicable and disgusting things I have ever seen...and I have no qualms saying so.

Her views are willingly representative of the extreme far-left/marxist/hate American crowd in this country, using the very freedoms that are purchased by the blood of people like her son to tear down and destroy our Republic. She is in fact a part of that far left, anti-American movement. It is not just that they are using and taking advantage of her...it is that she is willingly, purposely working with them as one of their chief lieutenants in that mis-begotten cause.

The thing that gets me is she so obvioiusly hated everythng Casey stood for and worked for, and did everything she could to undermine him and his mission while he was alive. There were probably other very serious issues between Cindy and Casey before he joined the Army, an act that must have really galled her, let alone the extent to which she must have been infuriated by his re-enlisting contrary to her deepest desires. From her view of America, he'd basically married the Devil's daughter and started having children with the Devil's daughter. That being the case, it would be very easy for her not to feel much real grief at all, but to be anxious to parade as much false "grief" as possible and use it as a weapon to slime Casey's memory and mission, which is exactly what she's doing.

I have no doubt that there were serious disagreements...and I have no doubt that she was, and still is angry at him over it.

She has chosen to let that anger overcome what should have been true motherly grief...even if she did disagree with him. That anger shows in her speech, in her insults, in her hate-filled diatrebes. It is sad...but it is also a reproach.

I've heard that Casey actually joined the military to get away from his mother.

I can see why he would do that. She's a loon.

My wife just received the following as a forwarded e-mail. I have made no attempt to validate it. but was considering posting it here as an article for folks to disscuss/critique.

When I searched to see if it had been posted already, I did not find it, but found this excellent thread, instead. So, instead of posting it as an article, I am first posting it here as a comment/addendum to this thread.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About Cindy Sheehan
What is most interesting to me is that the press gives this
little bunch of people who are protesting with Cindy so much air time without
discussing Cindy's background. This is a case of more press bias.
It has been pointed out on just a couple of media outlets that Cindy divorced her
first husband and left her son with him to be raised while she became a political
activist for the Democratic Party.
She had very little to do with her son in his
growing years.
She remarried. The 1st husband remarried. The
original father raised the son with his new wife. They miss their son and mourn
the loss of his life. They have stated that they are very proud of their son and
that they agree with the stance of America in Iraq and on terror. They said that
their son was eager to serve and to go fight the terrorists in Iraq.
He volunteered. How many news stations carried their interview? Not many.
So the son dies in Iraq and then Cindy shows up to make a stink. She gets an
audience with Bush. That was not enough. She goes to Crawford and demands another
audience. How many news stations carry the ongoing saga of Cindy? Practically all
of them. Cindy didn't care about her son. She let another woman raise him. Cindy
doesn't care about the other soldiers in Iraq.
Cindy cares about her liberal, feminist agenda and about using the death of her
son to lobby against Republicans and Bush. And the press is helping her. Why? Then few days ago, Cindy's 2nd husband filed for a divorce from Cindy. Cindy sounds
like a feminist opportunist who did not have the sense of responsibility to even
raise her own son. It looks like her 2nd husband is fed up with Cindy. We middle
Americans should be fed up with Cindy also. We should be fed up with the press.
They manipulate us into their "group think" and into the responses that they want
on their polls.
H. A. Brown
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I have no idea who "H. A. Brown" is, but, if there is any truth to his claim that Cindy is raising all this ruckus about the loss of a son she had little part in raising, then perhaps this (with improved formatting) might, indeed, merit its own thread...

Comments, anyone?

Thanks for debunking the "didn't raise her son" story! FR is one of the best "scam filters" in the world. You can get a straight answer on most any subject here...

A long time ago, I learned that "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't". IMHO, FR is a far better "urban legend debunker" site than Snopes -- and you don't have to filter out Snopes' left-wing bias!

Thanks again!!!
