Christopher Hitchens rips Cindy Sheehan a new oneon Hardball today (Wednesday)
Hardball on MSNBC ^

Posted on 08/17/2005 9:45:04 PM PDT by Charlesj

Wednesday's "Hardball," which was NOT hosted by Chris Matthews, had Christopher Hitchens REALLY laying into Cindy Sheehan. He called her a liar and otherwise stated, in many different ways, she was emotionally over the edge, a coward for lying about what she's said in the past and then not owning up to it, etc.

Im wondering if she is compelled to be the potty mouth that she is? I guess i know where her compelling comes from if it results in that kind of rhetoric. She is an idiot who is using her sons death in the same sickening way that Len Bias's mom did with the crack death of her son. Going on a national tour to prove that tradegy even befalls complete idiots and jackasses.

SHEEHAN: I don't think so, Chris, because I believe that Afghanistan is almost the same thing. We're fighting terrorism. Or terrorists, we're saying. But they're not contained in a country. This is an ideology and not an enemy. And we know that Iraq, Iraq had no terrorism. They were no threat to the United States of America.

This chick is nutty as a fruitcake.

Did you see Nora's repulsion at Hitchens comments? Fineman was desperately trying to downplay things but Hitchens would have no part in it.

If there's such a thing as a 'classic' 'Hardball' episode... this was it.

Dying to find a video clip of this. He went biblical on Sheehan. Best line was calling the Crawford Circus "Camp LW Fruitcake nutball", he might have even said moonbat. it was classic. Howard Fineman said "tell us how you really feel".

This was a classic Hardball the same as Zell Miller challenging Matthews to a pistol duel at the 2004 RNC.

I have to say it's interesting when I see and hear my fellow conservatives giving props to an avowed Marxist, who once produced a movie about Mother Teresa entitled "Hell's Angel." But, politics makes strange bedfellows, as they say.

Question: what is the difference between Sheehan's "America is NOT worth dying for" and the 60's slogan "Better Red than Dead?"

when I see other children who have been killed and I know what their families are going through

It's "all about the children"! Except for the small, annoying detail that these aren't CHILDREN!

I get my dose of MSM propaganda almost everynite from 'Hardboiled'.

Mathews is shameless in his adoration of the Democrat Party... if Clinton gave him a blue, cocktail dress... he'd don it without breaking to a commercial.

That is of course... if he could wrest it away from Andrea Mitchell.

Embarrassing as it is for me, a 10 year reader on Free Republic, I don't know how to Ping. I'll try to find out, or probably I'll just post the transcript as a new item.

I missed Hitchens but caught the beginning when Nora O'Donnell introduced a new bit of lunacy "Should Bush send Laura out to meet with Sheehan?" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to see Laura go out and throw her in that ditch for calling her husband a murderer, warmonger, terrorist, etc.

best part

O‘DONNELL: I‘m sure also the president did not anticipate that while he was spending a five-week vacation at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, that he would be witnessing a mom, Cindy Sheehan, who has been camped outside his ranch now, demanding a meeting with the president, saying she won‘t leave until that happens.

Christopher, do you think that this represents—or she represents some sort of tipping point in public opinion in America?

HITCHENS: Certainly not. She has, just today, lied about a statement that she made several times before to the effect that her son was killed in a war run by a secret Jewish cabal within the administration. She now says she didn‘t make that statement. She did make that statement. So as well as being an hysterical paranoid ideologist, or at least being manipulated by people who are, turned this into camp fruitbag and nutbag, she has decided not to have the courage or maybe the cowardice of her conviction. She now says she didn‘t make a statement that she definitely did.

FINEMAN: I think, Christopher.

HITCHENS: And she is also inviting a terrific riposte. What if we were to say, very well, the conduct of this war will depend on an opinion poll which we‘ll take of relatives of the fallen in Iraq, only they can decide, only they have the authority. She would lose.

Do I favor such a thing? No. I‘m pro-war but I would be totally against that. It would be handing our policy over to an.

(CROSSTALK)

O‘DONNELL: Howard, what about her.

HITCHENS: . minority which she has allowed our profession, disgracefully, to be used as a megaphone for a fraud.

O‘DONNELL: What about her statement? She is a private citizen to some degree. And yet she has made these comment about U.S. policy toward Israel and Palestine. And she says she is no longer going to pay taxes in the United States. Is she fair game, like a politician is, now that she makes these statements?

HITCHENS: Certainly.

FINEMAN: And I would agree with Christopher on that. I think he should be honest in his feelings about these...

HITCHENS: Well, I think there should be. I think our profession should stop acting as her megaphone.

I think our profession should stop acting as her megaphone.

Hitch isn't quite right here. In addition to the press acting as Sheehan's megaphone, Sheehan is also acting as a proxy for much of the press - she is saying the stuff they actually believe but can't get away with saying themselves.
