Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

Bourbon Street must be giving up...Shep said that a lot of the businesses along that street haven't even boarded up their windows!

Winds are now too high and variable for any aircraft takeoff or landing operations.

Anything still at the NO airport when this hits is going to be trashed, but you can't get them off the ground in this stuff.

During the storm it should be bearable, as the outside temps will be much cooler.

its madness. do they have so little faith in their populace, that they have to do weapons and contraband searches for a public emergency like this?

I feel like I am watching the Titanic sink. The mayor of NO just doesnt recognize and iceberg when he sees it staring him in the face.

TWC just said possible weakening, but still catastrophic

I'll never forget the pictures of all those people waiting to get into the SuperDome.

I am praying for each and every one of them.

I can't see them using the ground floor of the super dome.

If the water starts coming in those people on the ground floor are going to try to climb into the stands.

The vision I am seeing is very ugly if that happens.

I, too, have a foreboding feeling that nothing will ever be the same again in New Orleans. I go there about 8 times a year for four days at a time for my work. Was supposed to go this week, and supposed to go in October. Now I wonder, as I pray and pray for my many friends from that area and my own beloved Mississippi Gulf Coast.

They had better open most of the doors at the Dome during the storm or it could crush like a tin can from the pressure.

Interisting how no official has mentioned that.

They have been talking about most windows blowing out in high rises. But no talking about the dangers at the Dame.
