Pat Robertson gives religion a black eye
The Japan Times ^ | Aug. 29, 2005 | Cesar Chelala

NEW YORK -- Statements... by... Pat Robertson throw a disturbing light on the influence of religion in American politics.

<--snip-->

Who is Chavez and what has he done to incur Robertson's wrath? Although one may dislike his vociferous and authoritarian style, it is obvious that Chavez has more support from the poor and dispossessed in his country than any other Venezuelan president in recent memory. After clearly winning his re-election, he embarked on a pro Latin-American crusade that won him popular support in several countries on the continent.

<--snip-->

Chavez is as disliked by the elites in Venezuela as by members of the Bush administration, many of whom have been favorite targets of Chavez' scorn.

<--snip-->

Dislike for Chavez among Venezuela's elites has to do with his curtailing their benefits. It may also be due to his being of a darker color (he has been called by them "monkey" or "Negro") than the ruling classes, who are mainly white. Chavez's concern for the poor is obviously ignored by Robertson, who claims to be a defender of Christian values. His statements that Chavez should be assassinated are not only unworthy of a religious person; they also give religion a bad name.

Notice the guy writing this drivel isn't even Japanese. He is a Chavez, if not a Castro stooge. I heard the same crapola about how life was so wonderful under Castro with free medical care that they were stampeding to get in leaky flotillas heading for Florida.

Just to get a perspective on the credibility of Cesar Chelala the "award-winning writer on human rights issues" (according to the caption at the bottom of the article) who wrote this column, this stalwart defender of "human rights" had nothing but glowing praise for Castro's Cuba in this little piece.

Of course, he blames Cuba's problems on the U.S. "blockade", and has no words at all to suggest that Cuba's atrocious human rights record might possibly be contributing to the problem. Pretty odd for a writer who supposedly focuses on human rights issues.

What do you expect from someone, talking about a Hispanic--who has a Hispanic surname? If they were in Los Angeles, theywould probably be in the same Hispanic street gang
...(For illustration, see movie "Falling Down")

Pat Robertson throw a disturbing light on the influence of religion in American politics.

What a diaper load.

Let me see..

Religion has an influence on American politics.

A religious leader puts his foot in his mouth.

Therefore, the influence religion has on American politics has a disturbing light on it.

Perfect example of lefty logic.

Pardon me, but did Mr. Cesar Chelala (author of this op/ed) pitch an unholy fit over every Islamofascist death sentence as well?

No? Well, then...just another asshat hypocrite.

How long do we need to squeeze this turnip. Dr.Robertson said something intemperate, although I agree with him, and his lynching continues ad nauseum. I think all communist leaders should be removed and let the light of liberty shine in, but I guess that is wrong. Sheeeeesh.

Not compared to the Traitor Religious joining the Traitor Media to lie about and undermine our fight against Terror.
Most of our major denominations fall into that catagory.

I'm with you. I can only wish this sort of outrage followed every Leftist and Islamofascist death threat against our President and other good people. But noooooooooo...the Leftist media won't have anything to do with that. Not in the least.

Keep in mind that both the author AND Robertson could be in the wrong.

The writer is a liberal bigot. And Robertson DID give Christians a black eye.

I'm no fan of Pat Roberston - but I have to admit to suspecting that those who are screaming the loudest are those whose previous writings on Robertson were suggesting that he was not important. Now that he stepped over the line he has importance and influence with the White House. Either he is unimportant and his recent blunder is not worth great notice - or he is important and these same critics shortchanged him in their previous treatments. You cannot have it both ways.

But the Grace & Mercy & Depths of Forgiving Blood shed for All of Mankind's foolish words & Sins covers and washes them away.
