everyone is celebrating...

Not everyone, just Shep.

The thing has barely made landfall and everyone is celebrating...

I don't understand it either. I'm wondering where they are getting their info from.

"Just got up...and saw Shep.

He sounds like this is going to be SO much less of a storm for NO than he thought yesterday..."

Just got up too!

I hope he is right - and I hope it was all a bunch of doomsayers fed by all the people wanting to send the price of oil up.

Like someone posted earlier, if a seagull pops on an off shore rig, oil goes up 10%

"I'm afraid this will go down as ANOTHER example of media over-kill, which someday will lead to disaster."

Yes, God forbid people get out of harms way. Lets have them all sit in their homes next time and maybe they'll really get hit...ARE YOU KIDDING? I'm glad they evacuated and besides it's a VERY GOOD DRILL for the people of LA state if this hurricane doesn't cause mega damage. Now they'll see the pros and cons for future evacuate plans.

NO has dodged this bullet.

I'm not so sure about that. The eye is still about 60-70 miles from the mouth of Lake Ponchatrain. There's still the storm surge issue.

In other words, if this storm does not flood NO, then the odds of any storm having the exact conditions needed to flood NO, is almost zero.

This statement is valid for today.

Unfortunately, the Mississippi River is not static, and brings more silt every day, so eventually the storm needed to breach the levees will be much smaller than what would be required today.

Western side is weakened slightly, storm's proabably going a bit more to the east of NO, and it's trucking along about twice as fast now as it was last night. That's really important because there's less time for it to sit and spin and dump. Less rain and wind damage. Still possibly horrific, but not catastrophic. Here's hoping :)

The Weather Channel agrees with the 45 mile distance, looks like it to me. FNC is still reporting about 90 miles.

Hiya. Shep's been saying that all the hype hasn't panned out. Sounds good but is this only because the worst hasn't reached him or has Katrina fallen apart?

The best news for NO is that the storm is moving north quickly. That reduces the west side wind speed by it's forward speed reducing the surge of water from the lake into NO.
