CNN: Gulfport: Interstate is impassable, littered with all sorts of household debris (refrigerators, etc.), downtown was at a time under 12' of water, 2+ miles of town is still flooded, devastating damage(according to the reporter), several rescues, a-hole looters already striking.

I thought that was only emergency aid, not the kind of payouts associated with rebuilding.

why am I paying for federal flood insurance then, if they would pay for my losses without it anyway?

"Actually, if you check into it, you'll likely find that your flood insurance is actually through the National Flood Insurance Program run by FEMA."

So when I bought car insurance from State Farm (or whomever it was, it was years ago) that covered floods, it was actually a joint policy with FEMA? That's weird.

"There are three kids in here," the woman said. "Can you help us?"

That's really brilliant. Don't evacuate and keep three children in the path of a hurricaine. Oh right, they didn't have the money to leave. sure.

What is an oil rig, exactly? Is it a platform?

There's a lot of confusion about that, and the press doesn't help.

In general, a platform is a permanent structure for the production of oil and gas, although it generally has the facilities built into it to allow a drilling rig to drill additional wells from the platform.

A rig (when not on a platform) is something temporary, which basically floats like a boat. It can either have its legs extend to the seafloor for extra stability, or it can have sophisticated computers and engines to keep it stationary while drilling is underway.

It appears that this story is referring to the latter type of rig.
