Sharpton Evades Police for 9 Miles

A driver for the Rev. Al Sharpton led Ellis County sheriff's deputies on a nine-mile chase at speeds up to 110 mph before state troopers stopped the car, authorities said.

The driver was rushing Sharpton to the airport after his visit with anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan on Sunday at her camp outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford. The car carrying Sharpton and two other passengers was clocked doing 110 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 35 in Ellis County in North Texas, said Lt. Danny Williams.

The car ignored deputies' attempts to stop it and continued speeding and weaving in and out of traffic before it was stopped, Williams said.

Calls Monday to Sharpton's spokeswoman were not immediately returned. A spokesman for his attorney, Michael Hardy, referred inquiries to the spokeswoman.

Deputies arrested Jarrett Barton Maupin, 43, of Phoenix. Maupin told the officers he was hurrying to get Sharpton to the airport. Deputies impounded the rented 2005 Lincoln.

Williams said his officers offered Sharpton and the other, unidentified passengers a ride to a hotel across the highway, but they declined and walked there instead.

Maupin posted a total of $1,000 in bonds on charges of evading arrest with a vehicle and reckless driving.

Maupin with Sharpton in Phoenix,
October 2003: "Some people call
me his 'Mini Me.'"

Phoenix News: "Kid Sharpton"

Race Racketeers: There’s A New Generation!
By Bryanna Bevens
Al Sharpton, what does he do? Seriously, what does he list
for occupation on his tax returns? Professional Protester?

He was an ordained minister at the age of 10.

He ran for the Senate in New York four times, for mayor of
New York City and for President on the Democrat ticket,
but has yet to win an election—or even make a good showing.

He was a tour manager for James Brown, a youth volunteer
for Jesse Jackson and organized his first protest in high
school. He protested cafeteria food and the dress code.

One of the few things that gave me comfort where Sharpton
is concerned: there's no Al Sharpton, Jr. (As far as I
know.)

But then I saw the cover story picture in the recent
Phoenix New Times and gasped.

There he was: a miniature Al. [Kid Sharpton, by Jimmy
Magahern, February 3, 2003]
His name is Jarrett Maupin II. The resemblance is uncanny,
but he is not a blood relation. He is Sharpton’s new
protégé.

It began with a protest rally at Saguaro High School.

The dress code at Saguaro does not allow students to wear
baseball hats backwards, gangsta-style. [See p.9 of this
PDF]

One student, who happened to be black, was asked to turn
his hat around.

He refused and began to argue with school security and
administrators. When threatened with everything from
detention to expulsion, he accused the staff of racism. He
was being singled out.

The student was suspended and arrested for trespassing,
which suggests that he refused to leave campus after being
suspended. (School officials are not allowed to comment.)

Maupin is President of the Phoenix chapter of National
Action Network, Sharpton’s organization, while attending
an elite private school, St. Mary’s High. He organized a
protest rally in front of Saguaro High School.

Twenty students marched and chanted "No more racism in the
schools." Maupin chatted with reporters, offering such
insightful clichés as "Racism knows no borders."

The school district caved.

The Saguaro student’s punishment was reduced—from three
days suspension to one.

The squeaky wheel may get the grease. But that doesn’t
mean a wrong has been made right. More often than not, it
just stops the noise.

17 year-old Jarrett Maupin is emulating his idol, Al
Sharpton, and even refers to himself as "mini-me." Maupin
became an ordained minister at 14 and is now seeking a
city council seat in next year’s election.

It would be kind of sweet, actually…if it were not so
terrifying.

So what does America’s future hold in the way of young
political minds?

As reported by the Phoenix New Times in remarkable if
credulous detail, Maupin’s tale is one of racial
profiling, special treatment and racism.

I found a lot of truth in this—but with Maupin as the
perpetrator, not the victim.

Before transferring to St. Mary’s Maupin attended Brophy
Prep School, a private school known for its

rigorous curriculum and impeccable community standing.

The circumstances surrounding his sudden departure seem to
be a matter of debate. In his junior year, Maupin claims
he was attending a school dance when a janitor approached
him and accosted him with racial epithets.

He transferred to St. Mary’s—bringing several other black
students with him.

Two of them were star basketball players. They now wished
to compete against Brophy for St.Mary’s.

But the school district has a no-compete policy. Student
athletes are prohibited from joining more than one school
team in a 12-month period.

"He was only pulled over because the police were profiling."

In Ellis County if you're driving a car you're profiled period. Any driver is suspect in this part of the State.

”The driver is responsible for not pulling over, not the passengers.

True but he was obvously taking orders from someone in the car.

That may be true, but in this capacity as a driver, they'd have to prove he was a direct employee, and was on *his* payroll at the time. Who knows, maybe he was. Someone ought to find out, and if so, by all means, go after Sharpton. But be advised, it won't be easy, and it would be even harder to prove without a subpoena for records.

I wouldn't go there yet. Prove he was an employee, on Sharptons payroll, and then by all means, go for it.
