Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

What is with all these "thread police"? There are many aspects to everything, especially the Katrina disaster, including politics, foreign aid and much more.
Where do people on here get off demanding that others limit themselves to talking about only certain aspects of this disaster in this thread?
It just didn't happen as they expected. The lake did not overwash the levees...the levees failed after the storm.
Saw the looting video, and heard about the riot in the Superdome. Before the storm, heard the Superdome temps would soar to 120º without air conditioning.

..he's getting out of NO....says life cannot be sustained there...and everyone is told to try to leave.
Folks staying in his hotel were giving him their business cards so he can get in touch with their families.
Martial Law has been declared in NO....
..the water is rising, and the authorities aren't sure why.
Shep says there is no potable water, no food, no electricity....
..soon the mosquitoes will be everywhere, and there will be much illness.
He just reported that he and his crew are leaving - too much of an additional burden on the community. He did announce that for families of the workers at the hotel where he was staying - they are all fine, have water for several days.
I was thinking the same thing. Get every living soul out of that city, find housing for for them in neighborhoods in other cities and towns across the US, and let them live with friends and family in relatively safe conditions until NO is cleaned up. Then let them decide whether they want to move back.
Perhaps they will decide to rebuild their lives in safer areas...

wondered about airlifts too. Also wonder how many people are still holed up in their attics thinking they're safe. And now the water's rising. Just heard on another thread that martial law has been declared.

Looks like the dire predictions were right on...it's just that the levee breaches occurred 12-18 hours after the peak of the storm, instead of during the storm.
That was going on all day yesterday. Some people, (the thread police) seriously need to get a frickin life.
The best thing you can donate is cash. It actually costs more money to handle clothes than it does a cash donation. Plus, then they can spend it on whatever is needed most, and they have the power to buy in bulk.

Harrison Cty, MS. Probably where most deaths have occurred. 80 deaths and probably still counting.
NO: People need to stay put. Shelters are overflowing. Angry ppl demanding to get back in. A few who snuck back in are now calling for help and rescue for themselves. If they only knew what is going on perhaps they could reach way down and find a shred more patience. People are still dying right now.
I disagree. If there are four major breeches in the levees, by this time tomorrow New Orleans will be at the same water level as Lake Pontchatrain. Pumping water back into the lake is useless if there is open communication between the lake and the city.
And if fires break out, it's over. Recall what happened to Grand Forks when it flooded. This is far, far worse.
One of my relatives by marriage belongs to this organization. He's been in Iran, went to the Tsunami, was in NY after 9/11. His group left yesterday for NOLA. He is very modest, but it sounds like they are the first responders along with the PD and FD.
I usually give to the Savation Army, too. They have very low overhead expenses, so more of the donations actually get to the people in need. They will get canteens in as fast as possible. They will serve both the rescuers and the refugees.
Folks tend to focus on the immediate threat which, Sunday night, was the eye of a Cat 5 storm. Once that missed NO, a lot of folks breathed a big sigh of relief -- and that is why they thought they'd dodged the bullet.
But the folks on the ground in NO, and many folks on the live threads (Dog, dirtboy, and several others) were very clear on the fact that today would be the bad part, and they were right.
