Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

yeah, Im sure there was plenty of gas for 2000 buses to fill up.

This is a once in a century storm, you cant just get thousands of people on a buses, with long lines at gas stations onto already clogged freeways. Its easier said than done.

WDSU - There is a plan to try to seal the levy using helicopter drops of 3000 lb sandbags.

Sounds dicey to me, but I guess you gotta try.

Agreed. Also remember that storm surge isn't driven solely by the wind, it's also driven by the barometric pressure; it's basically a "dome" of water that expands upward under the low pressure near the center of the hurricane.

95% of a given storm surge is simply water piled up by wind, only 5% is caused by the water doming up due to low pressure.

If they had legs and a brain then they could have walked from the Quarter to the dome.

And it now appears we have to devote resources to evacuating people from the Dome. The dome wasn't a plan - it was the only remaining option.

When they say canteens, they mean 53ft trailers, with fully functional kitchens and washing facilites. They do the best work, and are usually the first on the scene.

Those canteens can do 20,000 meals/day per canteen. So, it's not like a mom and pop operation.

Tourists could have gotten cars to leave

I believe the reports said that there were no rental cars available. This makes sense - cars being available depend on cars being returned. If you had a car, would you return it? I've been in 'normal' situations when stranded overnight at an airport, and cars run out quickly. And, flights fill up quickly as well. I traveled for 8 years or so - you really have no idea how everything is 'just in time' in the travel industry.

WDSU - Superdome is surrounded by a knee deep moat (3 ft) filled with human waste, gasoline, debris, and red ants!

yeah, Im sure there was plenty of gas for 2000 buses to fill up.

Bus yards typically have their own gas pumps.

I'm tired of people making excuses for governmental incompetence - because we end up expecting nothing better. Most times it's annoying. In this case, it will be deadly.

He should probably avoid WDSU news personnel, who currently have a lot to say about his ilk.

Yep. I heard WDSU commenting on that!

Quote: Nobody was stuck. Tourists could have gotten cars to leave, could have gotten a plane before the airport closed

Nope. All rental cars were taken and flights were full or cancelled.

Kinda like the fall of Saigon I reckon.
