Governor: New Orleans Needs to Be Evacuated Tuesday, August 30, 2005

BATON ROUGE, La. — With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco (search ) announced late Tuesday that people now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers need to be evacuated.

"The situation is untenable," Blanco said during a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

Did the esteemed Governor propose a plan?

No, there has to be a good natural leader in the state. Rudy isn't a genie who we should call on in a jam. To do so doesn't give the fine people of Louisiana enough credit.

Someone mentioned retired Sheriff, Harry Lee, on one of the live Katrina threads. He could do it, and he's well respected by everyone.

I have to agree with you on Ed Koch and Oscar Goodman, but you won't find many of them in the Democrat Party. Both Koch and Goodman are old time New York Jews raised to be responsible and accountable in both good and bad times. Democrats such as them are a dying breed.

"The plan was clearly inadequate."

Yes. And I'm not talking about moving out 500,000 48 hours. Just the levee breech. Nothing done, nothing explained why.

This is what happens when you are elected to a position that your not qualified for.... people need to pay attention to who they vote into state and local governments....

It's the Peter Principle in action. Unfortunately, for my precious home state of Louisiana, it's going to be a very hard lesson.

I just heard today that a president going to the scene of a disaster has only been "policy" for a dozen years or more...was not the norm until recently. Probably when the third political party (the media) started using it against presidents such as Reagan and the first P. Bush--you know those two evil bastards who did not feel anything for the poor weedle folks.

My daughter called me from Eunice Sunday. They were ok. She told me it wouldn't do them any good to want to evacuate...the town was sold out of gas.

Good to hear.

I didn't mean to sound insensitive. My remarks were aimed at the Mayor and Gov not acting sooner and not at the victims.

"Oscar Goodman"

Oscar would be good.

Just keep an extra eye on him with the reconstruction money.

Man still does not control Mother Nature.

Mother Nature wasn't responsible for maintaining a levy system, for zoning, nor for putting together the response plan. There are plenty of man made contributions to this disaster; and the repercussions are going to be with us for a long time.

What is your concern? It is hardly possible to scew this up any then it already has been. The President agenda is going to drown in New Orleans, if he doesn't visibly get in there to assume responsibility and take charge. That is what the executive is supposed to do, and he is not doing it. This is not the kind of thing you wash your hand of and turn your back on.

Are you kidding me? I'll tell you what my concern is. It will divert resources from the rescue effort. I'm sure the President understands that. The important thing right now is getting people out of there, not political grandstanding. Get your priorities straight.

GW went back to DC early to coordinate rescue and cleanup efforts related to Kristina.

Arcadia is a resident Bush hater on FR. If Bush had been there today, he would be complaining about the resources being wasted.

You learn pretty quickly who the damned if you do, damned if you don't people are on FR.

I was only involved in one natural disaster. It was the Blizzard of '78 that paralyzed the coastline of New England for three weeks.

I was at BU at that time, what a mess. If that counts as a natural disaster, then I've got 2, that one and the Maine Ice Storm of 97 or 98... no power for about 10 days.

I just heard today that a president going to the scene of a disaster has only been "policy" for a dozen years or more...was not the norm until recently.

When I was a kid I remember Nixon going to Xenia, OH, which had been largely destroyed by a tornado. He showed up on April 10, 1974, a week after the tornado hit.
