Governor: New Orleans Needs to Be Evacuated Tuesday, August 30, 2005

BATON ROUGE, La. — With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco (search ) announced late Tuesday that people now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers need to be evacuated.

"The situation is untenable," Blanco said during a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

You need not drive a hurricane to drive the events. Rudy G wasn't driving (or more accurately flying) the planes on 9-11, but he took charge of the situation rather than have the situation take charge of him.

That's all I am saying - it's gut check time and the leadership missed the gut check. That has nothing to do with driving a hurricane, and everything to do with how you react to a hurricane.

that's what I've been asking for awhile. May be akin to the reason we don't have a Civil Defense agency anymore.

During the Cold War, congressional hearings concluded that it was just too difficult to evaccuate an entire city. One high ranking CD official whose name I've forgotten wrote a book titled: "With Enough Shovels" (I kid you not) It suggested that radiation wouldn't penetrate three feet of soil, and if memory serves, even suggested digging a "hidey hole" using a door commandeered from ones house to cover the hole dug, and covered with the requsite amount of soil. Now I'm jusat waiting for the one titled, "With Enough Buckets."

One more time: Government is not our friend. And: "What's everybody's business, is nobody's business.

How do you get to them will all that debris?

I know it's probably not impossible, but unlikely they would take the risk of damaging the liners.

Who knows what's underwater!

Bush to NO right now would be little more than grandstanding, and he'd be impeding rescue efforts by even being there. Such a style over substance move rings of Clintonism.

The Mississippi River at New Orleans is normally about 90 feet deep. A cruise ship draws about 25-30 of water, so plenty of water depth to bring them up the river. In fact, cruise ships normally dock at New Orleans. Even if the dock structures suffered, it should be possible to find some place to tie the vessels up long enough to load them.

Cruise ships are self sufficient, and have excellent communications equipment. They could supplement the facilities of the city greatly until some normal services are returned.

That's fine, but it complements the failure on the part of Nagin and Blanco to react poorly. It isn't an excuse for them.

I like your idea of the cruise ships.

Fema for years has advised people to make plans for such
disasters, survival packs, know where to go, etc....

but somebody needs to take charge of the situation and the first step is taking charge of Nagin and Blanco.

The FEDERAL government should declare martial law (not thelocal govt), and get those two wothless RATs out of the picture. Either that, or draft Rudi Guliani or some clear thinking non-RAT to run things.

Would have been nice if she had felt this way as ardently BEFORE the hurricane. It was plain as day then.

Call the military, tell them you need 100,000 people moved out of N.O., tell them they have a blank check, sit back and watch.

Since that is the job of the Commander in Chief, why hasn't he done that yet?

"We're not even dealing with dead bodies," Nagin said. "They're just pushing them on the side."

If the eye's of the nation were not con New Orleans, it would rapidly deteriorate into New Mogadishu. Nagin would have no problem playing Aideed with any food relief brought in from outside.

This is what happens when liberalism meets reality and children have to assume the responsibilities of adults. Perhaps while these people are waiting for the flood waters to recede they could read a copy of "Lord of The Flies."
