It is with heavy heart I write this...
I have finally reconnected with my best friend who is a paramedic who was sent from Georgia 2 days ago to Gulf Port, Mississippi before the hurricane hit.
He just reached me within the last 10 mins via emergency cell phone to tell me he was alive.
Thousands of bodies have been discovered throughout Mississippi in Gulf Port, Waveland,Hancock County,Bay of St.Louis.
They are hanging in trees and they are pulling them out 30 at a time. Entire families found drowned in their homes and washing up on shore.
The stories he could tell me were brief. National Guard is on the scene and arresting anyone seen on the streets.
The numbers are staggering and what I have been told tonight will shake people to their foundation as the numbers will be coming out in the next 24-hours of just how many people have actually perished in these and 3 other beach communities.

There is a reason it's been so quite. FEMA modeling said over 50k could die in a situation like this.. I sure hope they are way off.

I had a feeling this was coming ... so many people made the fatal mistake of trying to ride it out. God bless the survivors and please give strength to the rescuers who have such a hard job to do. God bless America. God ... bless ... America.

please dont propagate this myth.....gulfport and biloxi were forecast to get full ne eyewall surge at least 24 hours in advance of landfall.....the "wobble" was a few miles and landfall occured exactly where predicted.

If I had to guess, they don't want to scare the people outside the affected area with the damage tolls. But, like the tsunami, the numbers and images got out, and that is when the relief efforts started pouring in.
On FoxNews this evening, they were showing communities that had been leveled to the cement foundations. All the pads were clean. If there were any people in those homes, they'd have to be dead. I can understand the drive to stay near your home, but when it comes to hurricanes, I'd leave the area.
One thing is for certain, this will probably alter how future hurricanes are handled, with evacuations not being up to the individual.
For safety and looting reasons, landfall areas should be evacuated completely IMO.
How many were left within a mile of the coastline?
They probably don't know. I have heard several times a reporter say, "Nothing has been heard at all from so and so".
Someone earlier on FR mentioned a whole town had disappeared, no one heard from them. And someone looked it up and saw it was a town of over 20,000. So this may well be.
Don't forget the reporters claimed 20 or 30 thousand would be dead in the World Trade Center attack on 9/11. That figure turned out to be way off.
If I was speculating as to why they might only give out the worst case scenario numbers, I'd guess it could be when the real numbers come out, it makes the disaster not seem so bad. They want the American people to go back to sleep and never hold anyone in government accountable.
....and here I was thinking the death toll was pretty low BECAUSE I haven't seen bodies on the TV.

agreed Russian has made ovatures of help ealier today, but that has been the only one that I have heard.
I think the reality of this will settle in over the next few days when the body count start rolling out. I think the only reason that the Government (fed and state) have not release anything yet, is that they do not want to create a rush of people to the area trying to find out about family members or create a panic in those states.
I wonder if once the #'s are out if the international wallet will come out? I doubt it unfortunatly...
