Russia offers help to U.S. after deadly hurricane

MOSCOW — Russia is ready to assist the United States in dealing with the damage caused by hurricane Katrina, which has taken 68 lives so far and left behind a tremendous amount of devastation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a message to U.S. President George Bush Tuesday.

"Russia deeply sympathizes with Americans, who faced a disaster of such a colossal scale, and is ready to offer necessary assistance," Putin said.

Putin asked Bush to extend his condolences to families and relatives of those killed in the disaster.

"Accept my sincere words of regret in connection with the natural calamity in the USA. I know that hurricane Katrina, which swept the southeast coast of the country, resulted in deaths, left tens of thousands of Americans without roofs over their heads, and caused substantial damage to the region's economy," the message said. /RIA Novosti/

Germany has not offered help. In fact, they said Katrina was our fault because we did not heed the global warming warnings.

Send hospital boats, generators, buses, pumps, dry food, rescue teams...Now, not in two weeks.

Interesting you should say that. Here's an eye openner. One training project I was managing in the military had a sea lift component. So I go down to Jacksonville Fl to inspect the facilities and there in the middle of the military side of the docks is a huge Russian freighter being loaded up with Marine equipment. Yup, the Russians and Norwegians are the ones shipping us around these days.

You mean without "touching" any of them.

Did they really? Shaking my head in disbelief. Get our bases out of there and tell them to blame the economic damage on Global Warming too.

They were going to send their navy, but it's not back from a bass fishing trip.

Have we heard from France?

Naw, they still ticked since hearing the rumor the President's appointing John Gibson to serve as Ambassador to France.

:-)

Germany also said Katrina's effects would ripple to the EU and ruin their economy. Oh, well.

This is their vacation month. IIRC, they don't even check in on the elderly they leave behind in historically hot weather. Maybe after they return.

This is great--let the goodwill triumph all the time. Regardless of my overall negative view of Putin, in this case he did a right thing. It would be great if rescuers from Russia, Europe and other places will be invited to participate in the rescue effort. America is always ready to help whenever disaster strikes no matter what the political relations with the affected country.

Just as an interesting note, Putin was the first foreign leader to call President Bush on Sept. 11th.

Yup, lets worry about your own arses in the future now rather then offer to help or worry about your "ally's" sufferring citizens now. Typical of the EU Fourth Reichers.

I'll be really surprised if any of the main EU nations send anyone. The Germans are busy reading us lectures rather then offerring help.
