Katrina Floodwaters Trap Couple In Alligator-Filled Ditch

A man in Pascagoula, Miss., is credited with saving the lives of a 90-year-old man and his wife after rising waters carried their car into a ditch filled with alligators that had escaped from a nearby alligator farm, according to a Local 6 News report.

"The alligators were waiting," good Samaritan David Nix said. "The water was coming through my window and the alligators were waiting for these people to die. They were sitting in the car and not doing anything, in shock and scared. They were just grabbing the steering wheel."

Good Samaritan David Nix said he noticed the couple's car in the ditch Tuesday and ran to help when he noticed alligators were surrounding the vehicle.

"The alligators were waiting," Nix said. "The water was coming through my window and the alligators were waiting for these people to die. They were sitting in the car and not doing anything, in shock and scared. They were just grabbing the steering wheel."

Nix said rising waters pushed the car into the ditch with the alligators.

"The water was coming over both sides of the street and dragged the car into ditch," Nix said. "Alligators started surrounding the car. There was a 90-year-old elderly man there in shock and I had to drag him out."

Nix dragged the man to safety and then rescued the woman.

"Then, I had to pull his wife out and she was in shock," Nix said.

Nix put the couple in the back of his truck and drove them to Cedar River Hospital.

"They are safe and alive," Nix told a Mississippi reporter.

Man, some people are lucky, and then there are people that survive to 90 and are lucky.

Just what can you say about all of this. There just are no words, no word that can describe what has happened.

How prophetic of his parents to name him "Good Samaritan David Nix!" Good job!

If the gators are allowed to roam free, where will it lead? There're probably a lot more of them swimming all over the place near N.O. At this rate, they'll thrive there: plenty of hiding places with the abandoned houses submerged. How long does it take for one of these babies to grow up, anyway? There could be a population explosion before the Army Corps gets the levy patched...

Thank you for a good news story. I'm thankful for this heroic effort. I'm certain scenes like this are playing out all over the tri-state region but all the TV media wants to talk about is the looting and the deplorable state of things

I was thinking the same thing. They surrounded the car, he said, yet he was able to rescue them?

Wouldn't you love to introduce that group of gators to the Code Pink slime in front of Walter Reed? I know I would.
