Project 21 Responds to Congressional Black Caucus Criticism of Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

Contact: Ryan Balis at (202) 543-4110 x19 or rbalis@nationalcenter.org

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus held a press conference today in which it was that asserted God "cannot be pleased" with the Bush Administration's response to Hurricane Katrina and suggested race is a factor affecting the likelihood of a person's survival in the aftermath of the hurricane.

Speaking at the press conference, Rep. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), said "To the President of the United States, I simply say that God cannot be pleased with our response." Cummings also said: "We cannot allow it to be said that the difference between those who lived and those who died in this great storm and flood of 2005 was nothing more than poverty, age or skin color."

Members of the black leadership network Project 21 have blasted the Congressional Black Caucus - whose elected members are charged to serve the best interest of all Americans - for racially politicizing a natural catastrophe.

"The comments and actions of the Congressional Black Caucus were morally opprobrious and divisive," said Project 21 member Mychal Massie. "It is beneath the level of sane discourse for the Congressional Black Caucus to suggest that blacks are suffering more than the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have been displaced."

Adding to these comments, Project 21 member Kevin Martin points out: "Several of the Congressional Black Caucus' members have districts that have been devastated by this natural disaster. But rather than offering encouragement to those federal, state, local, and private citizens who are responding to this natural disaster, they would rather fan the fames of partisan rhetoric and hatred."

Project 21 members also questioned the use of Biblical passages in comments by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), in which he asserted, "God cannot be pleased" with the Bush Administration's response to the disaster.

Mychal Massie, an ordained minister and founder of In His Name Ministries, responded, "For Elijah Cummings to use the Bible to support his hateful speech directed at the President while issuing a pass to the liberal black groups is one more example of his belligerent attitude and jaundiced understanding of appropriateness."

Project 21 members called on members of the legislative branch of government to offer unity, patience and an end to violence and looting. "In this time of tragic need, there should be leadership offered from all sides including the Congressional Black Caucus and civil rights groups," said Kevin Martin.

To date, the federal government has responded to the devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina by sending more than 15,000 National Guardsmen, 7,800 U.S. military personnel and 61 Federal Emergency Management response teams to assist in the recovery efforts. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that federal, state and local government efforts have saved more than 4,500 lives, assisted more than 30,000 people and evacuated more than 22,000 displaced persons of the hurricane.

Was God pleased with Jesse Jackson Jr.'s call to President Bush to, in essence, put a hit out on God (like Bush did to the terrorists on 9-14-01)? Could we just have a repeat of Korah, Dathan and Abiram with these "black leaders", with the dirt getting an early lunch?

What did you do to help - HOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE? Why weren't you with Jessie Jettison down in Venezuala also looking for a kick back? Or maybe with Al Charleton holding Cindy Sheehan's hand as she desecrates the sacrifice of her son?

Why doesn't Ole Lijah get his buddy, the Emperor Moon to help. Cummings carried Moon's crown on a velvet pillow while wearing white gloves at Moon's coronation. It was such a beautiful ceremony!

Lijah, like the other members of the fully segregated, step-n-fetchit, colored only Congressional Black Caucus, is a black racist. As a scumbag dem, he will use any opportunity to take a shot at Bush.

I can understand the CBC's deep embarrasment at the behavior of the fat blacks in N. O., both the looters and the dependents loosers waiting around for someone to bring them something. For the very first time, I begin to understand why 95% of black voters vote for dems, it is an issue of ignorent dependency.

If you don't mind I am going to post this here. Mrs.Bush was saying today that people affected by Katrina and children esp., need to get back to their routines and get the children back to school... that is great advice I think BUT there are families who need school supplies because they homeschool, and they will need help the government will not provide.

So here is a link for people who want to STHU about their stupid liberal politics right now and for those who want to use their resources to help good people get back on their feet. Thanks for listening:

These CBC welfare cases are nothing more than race baiting rejects from the gutters of America's gerrymandered districts.

If the leftwing press ignored them as they should then America could
begin to heal the rift between Americans they have created.

I am truly sick and tired of ignorant black people. You know why these people are in New Orleans because they choose to stay there. Two days before the storm hit The Black Mayor of New Orleans said evacuate the city. Now I am sure there are enough school buses and other means of transportation that could have evacuated NOLA before Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast. The behavior of these gutter urchins are unconscionable.

Mayor Nagin is out there showing piss poor leadership by blaming the government instead of growing a pair of stones and lead his city like Rudy did during 9/11. I am a black person and I recognize good leadership arises during time of crises. There is nothing racist about that. NOLA is predominately black and it's leadership is unsat PERIOD. You have black female police officers looting with the criminals instead of trying to stop them. That is the face of New Orleans law enforcement an obese black woman in Walmart with a shopping cart stealing. I mean to rant because I am sick and tired of the same cries of racism when there is none. Those people are foolish and ignorant. It was the Mayor decision to open up the Super-dome he didn't consider that major storm always knock out power so you have all those people in a hot smelly enclosed structure that was really brilliant.

I have been listening and watching New Orleans local response to this devastation and am convinced that they had no direction and no compassion for their own people.

And then the Mayor starts pointing fingers every which way but loose!.

And then Drudge comes up with this picture.

WTF?

"I am truly sick and tired of ignorant black people."

I'm sick and tired of liberals....I don't care what color they may be.

"You know why these people are in New Orleans because they choose to stay there."

I agree. They had well advanced warning about this hurricane and I saw a photo of at least a hundred school buses now part way submerged under water that could have been used to ship these folks out. The local government is going to owe the people of New Orleans an explanation about that in the near future.

"The behavior of these gutter urchins are unconscionable."

Ouch, that one hurt. I wouldn't describe the collective people of New Orleans as "gutter urchins". I saw a man from New Orleans break down and cry yesterday. I saw another man who was ashamed at the behavior of some from within his community who chose to loot and shoot at those trying to help. At any rate, we should now be focusing on helping the people. Everything else will have to wait.

I am sick and tired of the same cries of racism when there is none.

YES. The issue here is lack of leadership by the NO mayor and LA gov. We should hold *all* elected leaders to high standards of office, and not excuse them because of their race or gender.
I'd bet that few Americans think this would be so much of a disaster if Rudy (or someone like him) had been mayor of NO.

Our system is designed to have the Fed'l agencies respond to local leaders, not to have the Fed'l agencies take over local concerns. That's a problem when the local leaders are so inadequate.
I'll remember that when I vote for our next mayor, County Commissioner, and Governor. I wish everyone would.

What gets my steaming is that some Christians dare to attack Bush's Christian beliefs. I have no problem with Christians attacking other Christians over policy. But for a sleezy pedophile like Jackson to question Bush's Christian belief is just too much. For instance, as much as I despise Carter's politics, I would not question his Christian faith. I believe he is sincere - just simply a very foolish man.

Right on the money.

My extended family is about 10% black, 25% Latin and about 65% Arabic--no whites.

I am smart enough to know this--the big city (NO) and the the playing of the race card, will cause the focus to be on race and NO. But I know damn well there are rural areas (white areas) that have seen as much devastation and the people are suffering as much as the people of NO. The situation may be worse in NO on some aspects, but the small rural white areas may have worse situations in other areas. Jesse Jackass and creeps like Elijah Cummings will never mention that, now will they.

The Black Caucus is a sham and an embarrassment to good decent blacks. They only drive down a one-way street--RAT Boulevard, spewing hatred, making idiotic comments and littering the ground with race cards as they go.

If they had half a brain and a quarter of a heart, they would get their scummy assses out to NO and help out.

I'm no expert on what God thinks, but Elijah Cummings (D-MD) is likely doing more to earn God's contempt than President Bush. Cummings has certainly earned my contempt.

With all of the benefits that come from living in America, this guy can't get beyond skin color??? Cummings' attitude only will perpetuate the perception of black inferiority. Probably for generations. And not just for blacks. That perception is passed on to the children of all races. And no amount of "affirmative" action will fix it; it will only make it worse.

Where are the black race pimps - Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton? Why are they not on the ground in NO, ministering to "their" people, as they refer to blacks? I think the answer is obvious to any American who can think. God, I despise them.
