NOAH’S WISH COORDINATING PET RESCUE IN SLIDELL, LA
Noah's Wish ^ | 09/01/05 | Terri Crisp

Posted on 09/02/2005 5:55:43 PM PDT by MarMema

Noah’s Wish is working with animal control officials in the city of Slidell, Louisiana to coordinate animal rescue. Terri Crisp, Founder and Director of Noah’s Wish, has met with Slidell Mayor Ben Morris and Animal Control Director Damian Anti to assess the city’s needs and a coordinated pet rescue operation is being implemented.

The animal control facility in Slidell was flooded with 10 feet of water and approximately 50 animals were evacuated prior to the storm. The Mayor of Slidell has made available a large warehouse that is being used to set up a temporary shelter for cats and small dogs. In a lot behind the warehouse, tents are being set up and chain link dog runs being built to house larger dogs. Once completed, the temporary shelter will be able to house over 1,000 animals. Over 400 trained Noah’s Wish volunteers and 25 veterinarians will work around the clock to provide medical support and care to these pets.

“There are many dogs running loose throughout the city,” said Crisp. “Many people left their animals behind when they evacuated and law enforcement has been cutting dogs loose as they find them.” Approximately 200 stray animals have already been picked up by animal control and these animals will be moved to the temporary shelter. A database will track all animals who enter the shelter, with the goal of reuniting owners with their lost pets. Temporary shelter for pets will be offered to residents who lost their homes and are unable to keep their animals with them in shelters or hotels. One Noah’s Wish volunteer, a veterinary technician from Indianapolis, is working to assess the needs of local veterinarians in Slidell so they can open their offices to treat injured animals.

The city of Slidell, located directly north of Lake Ponchatrain was devastated by Katrina. “We can use all the help we can get right now and I am incredibly grateful to have Noah’s Wish here to coordinate relief efforts for pets,” said Slidell Mayor Ben Morris.

Wish I could give her (your doggie) a hug--

I just saw video of two doggies on a porch of a house surrounded by water--at least one of the dogs was heavily chained to a post--he couldn't help himself if he wanted to.
I sure hope help is on the way--at least the video indicates that someone knows they are there.

Thanks for your post. I hope that the new addition to your family gets better. I suspect that she will; you seem to be "good folks" who know how to best treat an animal.

Being an animal is luck of the draw, I reckon. There are the ones like my dog and cats who live in pure animal luxury and then there are the poor unlucky ones who get abused. Makes me sick

That is terrible but at least they brought the dog along and didn't just leave it there.

She has lots of good days with the occasional bad day.
I don't know what provokes the bad days...maybe dogs can have "flashbacks", too.

We've pretty much figured out what most of her "panic triggers" are and have tried to minimize her fear of particular objects/situations.

She's a *lot* better than when she first came here but she still expects us to punish her for her "freak outs".
The poor thing always acts so befuddled when the beating she's expecting doesn't happen and she gets hugged instead.
I hope for the day when she completely forgets that beatings even exist.

If being loved is enough of a cure, she'll have plenty of that...:)

and bringing back dog toys because I feel bad that I left them....:))

I'm so glad to know that I am not the only one who brings my pets back souvenirs from vacation. ;-)

I hope help is coming for them, too.

I know exactly what you mean. I was cleaning out behind the fridge yesterday and when I moved it back into place I found a ton of toys! LOL!

Half the time I don't even know why I buy them toys. The cats love a crumpled up grocery story receipt and list night one of them was fascinated with a Fixadent commercial on TV.

Same here.

Buy the dogs an $11 liver-flavored NylaBone and they play with the cardboard from the wrapper until it's in tatters and *then* they play with the bone.

Paper towel shredding is the #1 'fun thing to do' in this house.

[messy slobs]...;))

I've had a cat that got that way after she freaked out over a veterinarian's attempt to shave a spot on her neck for a blood test. For a few years she couldn't bear the sight of my own electric shaver. Curled cord or sound of buzz = freaked out, snarling, ready to fight cat. She also acted that way in response to a metronome's clicking. Cat finally calmed down about 6 years later.

Our cats love that, too! LOL!! I guess cats and dogs can agree on some things, after all. ;-)

It's the "micro shreds" that get me.....like they're trying to separate the paper towels into individual molecules or something...;))

What a beautiful "baby", glad she is in a happy place now, I have no respect for people who beat on animals just because they can....
