Thanks, you can find a picture here ladyinred if you just read the rest of the thread! :-) This isn't what I expected! Why would they use this shape? Good Grief.

How about we keep the crescent, but impaled on the foot of a cross like those one sees on the domes of churches erected by St. Stephan of Moldova in commemoration of each of his victories against the Turks?

Can this ignorant and insipid move be undone?

It sound incomplete. Where's the minaret with a mullah yowling like a stuck pig five times a day?

I wish I were a Pennsylvanian because, other than speechlessnes, the only comment that comes to mind is:

OVER MY DEAD BODY!

Ha anybody obtained the real-life reaction of the victims' families?
This is grotesque!

It was also a very common symbol for Arizona and New Mexico indians. I've got a 1922 map of AZ and NM, and the decorative border is made of swastikas.

A few years ago here in Central California they tore down a building that revealed the side of the building it was right next to. On the side of the other building was a big swastika that had been painted on it in the 1910s or 1920s (pre-Nazi). Some people wanted it painted over and some wanted it saved because it was historical. Don't remember how it turned out.

Preacher fights Flight 93 marker's 'Islamic' crescent
Friday, September 09, 2005

AP

SOMERSET, Pa. -- A Somerset County preacher vowed to fight the design of the Flight 93 National Memorial, insisting that the crescent pathway used in the design is a symbol of Islam.

"This is a memorial to the terrorists who killed those people, not a memorial to the folks who died there innocently," said the Rev. Ron McRae, leader of the Bible Anabaptist Church near Jerome, about 55 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

"The crescent is as much connected to Islam as the cross is to Christianity," said McRae of Conemaugh Township, also listed as director and founder on the Web site of the Lancaster-based Street Preachers Fellowship.

McRae said the group may go to court to try to block the "Crescent of Embrace" memorial designed by Paul Murdoch Associates of Los Angeles. The design centers on a mile-long semicircle of red maples surrounding the point of impact, where 40 passengers and crew were killed when the hijacked plane crashed near Shanksville on Sept. 11, 2001.

Though not accepted by all Muslims, the crescent moon and star is an internationally recognized symbol of Islam and appears on the flags of many Muslim nations.

Murdoch, however, said his crescent has no religious significance, but was created to add formality to the bowl-shaped valley surrounding the crash site.

Personally, my first impression from the name "Crescent of Embrace" is that it's akin to the "don't fight them, understand them" mentality of the Left towards terrorists.

An embrace is an action of unity. Since the "embrace" is a RED Crescent, it seems to imply unity with Muslims. Not American unity, or the unity of the brave men and women on the flight.

I am sure the designer/s are well aware of the symbolism. It's no mistake - it's too large a mistake to make.

It's highly inappropriate.

There is an infinite number of possible designs that don't remotely resemble the enemy or their motives for this attack. Why would any of us stand against those who feel the need to remove the one shape that causes so many to think of the attackers first?

The only answer is pride. Feelings get hurt when you say you don't like someone's idea or design or you don't agree with their decisions. I know we live in a self-centered society but are we really this lost as a country?

Does it resemble a prominent Islamic symbol? Yes. Can we make slight changes in the the shape so it would never resemble a monument to Islam? Absolutely. Then why not change it? Because we might hurt the feelings of the people who approved the design. No disrespect intended, these are the objective facts.

This country was built on selfless service and sacrifice. The people on flight 93 are the ultimate example of selflessness but most of us would have done the same thing in the circumstances. Their circumstances revealed the futility of selfish thinking and action. We should share their perspective each and every day of our lives. Let's try to stop our self-centered emotions from dictating our words and actions. Let's try love and respect for all that is good in this world. There is only one that meets this criteria.

All Americans are victims of 911. We should try to behave like the heros of that day.

Hey this is a two-fer! Put a little handle on the crescent and add a hammer and you've got something that Lenin would be proud of as well as the islamics.

Maybe the "tower of voices" is a minaret? I'm beginning to have serious doubts on the motives behind this architect's design since finding out that he is a lefty and anti-Bush.

Come on it's even called the "Crescent of Embrace".... hell if you put up something call the "Cross of Remembrance" the ACLU would sue

At first I thought that those who are complaining about this were making "much-a-do-about-nothing," but the terminology bothers me. I would love to see a response from the design team to a simple question: "Why did you call it "Crescent?" And, depending upon their response, their answer to: "Do you understand the inappropriate religious meaning contained in the use of that symbol?"

Additionally, I must agree that the ACLU would be going ape-dooky over this. Has someone thought of contacting them on this issue? While their past actions would tend to suggest that they would only oppose this if it were a Christian or (perhaps) Jewish symbol that was referenced or used, there IS a chance that they might act on this. Not a big one ... mind you ... but a chance.

Interesting. If true, his ignorance and insensitivity is amazing.

That is even MORE telling. My suspicion is growing. This must be stopped.
