Ray Nagin: School Busses Not Enough, Send Greyhound!

The more this guy opens his mouth, the deeper the hole...

Ray Nagin: School Buses Not Good Enough

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin garnered a ton of publicity with a profanity-laced interview he gave to WWL radio last Thursday, where he blasted President Bush and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco for not coming to rescue his city in time.

However, Nagin's most newsworthy comments - where he explained why he didn't use hundreds of city school buses to evacuate his city's flood victims - went almost unnoticed. Turns out, Nagin turned his nose up at the yellow buses, demanding more comfortable Greyhound coaches instead.

"I need 500 buses, man," he told WWL. "One of the briefings we had they were talking about getting, you know, public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out of here."

Nagin described his response: "I'm like - you've got to be kidding me. This is a natural disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

While Nagin was waiting for his Greyhound fleet, Katrina's floodwaters swamped his school buses, rendering them unusable.

'You can't make it up' What else is this guy hiding that's going to come out?

Yeah...and that's why a 20-year old was still able to steal a school bus on WEDNESDAY and drive 70 people out of New Orleans...two days before the Mayor's rant. Forget the 48 hours the Mayor wasted before the storm; he still had 24-hours after the storm hit and before the levees broke, and according to this story, anytime in between.

"turns out that over 2000 school busses in New Orleans.."

I can't believe that figure. Sure you don't mean 200?

It is more than 200. When I counted the buses on satellite photos of just two parking lots I had over 400. There were other parking lots which I didn't count.

I don't know the exact number, you may be correct.

http://junkyardblog.net/archives/week_2005_08_28.html shows a sat photo of 160 or soo less than a mile from the Dome on 3 Sept just sitting there.

Well, there is the explanation that the School Board, in negotiations over months or years, wouldn't agree to allow their buses to be used in an emergency.

When a Cat 5 hurricane is headed directly your way, the nuances of union driver contracts go out the window.

A 15 year old KID managed to drive one to the Superdome, load it with refugees, and drive them out of NO to safety. 'nuff said.

I just heard this one Rush. Nagin was quoted on a radio station as saying the school buses weren't enough - he wanted Greyhounds. But then did NOTHING to ensure that commercial drivers were available.

This is just unbelievable. The more that comes out, the more even the mainstream media starting to SLOWLY get it.

I have a different take on this interview. It seems to me he is not answering the the question why didn't he use school buses BEFORE the storm, but why wasn't he using them AFTER the storm. Here's the telling quote:

where he explained why he didn't use hundreds of city school buses to evacuate his city's flood victims

They weren't flood victims until after the storm.

"...What makes him think he has a right to demand and commandeer the buses belonging to Greyhound.."

True. Imagine if a Republican mayor had made the request. And I've yet to see this story picked up by the MSM.

200, 2000, whatever - point is that a LOT OF BUSSES WERE NOT USED BY MAYORAL DECISION. When you're talking hundreds of busses minimum, the exact order of magnitude is a relatively minor issue.

New Orleans has/d about 80,000 students. 2000 buses wouldn't seem out of line. Ain't gubmint grand?

Residents were heard to say...

"If you're going to rescue me, rescue me in style and comfort or don't rescue me at all!"

Quite true. Doubt it would have made any difference either way. It's the entitlement mentality. Moi? A yellow bus? Non! (Implication: white people would have Greyhounds sent for them so send them for us).
