Former President George H. W. Bush announced Monday that he and former President Bill Clinton hope to raise millions of dollars for Hurricane Katrina relief.

Former President Clinton said nothing they do would be an adequate response to the misery the hurricane dealt to southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

They announced that private corporations have promised support such as a $23 million pledge from Wal-Mart Stores.

They also said their presidential library funds will donate to the cause and that other presidential library funds have also promised support.

Former first ladies Barbara Bush and Hillary Rodham-Clinton attended the news conference at which their husbands announced the fund-raising effort.

The announcement came at the Reliant Park complex, where thousands of Hurricane Katrina refugees are sheltered.

Both helped raise $11 million for tsunami victims.

Why are the Bushes catering to Clinton's desire for elder statesman status?

I saw them on a TV ad tonight - Bush Sr. looking somewhat befuddled and playing second fiddle to a smug-looking Clinton. Bush kept looking at Clinton while Clinton spoke, as if Clinton was taking the lead.

Clinton left for India Tuesday to raise money for himself. What a puke!

I think you're channeling Askel5's hatred for the Bushes.

lets hope and pray that they raise a lot of money for the victims. """

I'm not caring much about that -- it all becomes feel-good window-dressing after the feds have promised tens of billions of tax dollars. There's going to be so much money that more will be wasted than spent to help people. Just the way we've already wasted tens of billions on "homeland security"

Besides, the money these two clowns raise will go to the governors. As much as I think of Barbour, I would not want a red cent of my money going anywhere near Blanko. Tax money is bad enough but I doubt there will be any accounting whatever of the money Bush the Senile and Bubba raise. Wish I weren't so cynical.

What is the point of private funding or stupid telethons when our government is prepared to throw $100 billion down the New Orleans shithole? It is absurd for a Grandmother from Peoria to send in $20 to a Katrina telethon, when the House voted to send $600 per household to 'rebuild' that cesspool. It is sad to see well-meaning Americans get shafted yet again.

I am disappointed in GHWB and Barbara for cozying up to this slime! Nothing good will ever come of it!

I don't get the coziness between 41 and 42. 43 is taking from our back pocket and the other 2 want to get into our front pocket. There's so much stuff going down there just from good hearted people that I'll bet much of it will go to waste. JMO.

"On that I agree 100%-especially when you get LA pols involved. That has always been a receipe for disaster. Most corrupt state in this country's history"

Brit Hume reported last night on the Grape Vine segment that the money raised by BushClinton will be given to the three governors of the three states and the states will report back on HOW the money was spent. Boy! That's a lot of accountability.

I fear there will not be any accountability to any of the funds raised. Brit Hume also reported that the United Way has priorities for the money they are raising - rebuilding their own facilities in the cities destroyed by the hurricane.

Do we think the media will make a case out of "wasted funds"? Not if it involves Clinton, it won't!

When does Clinton break-out from this love fest, and declare that it's all my influence that countries and people give to the flood relief, screw Bush.

And the witch will state: "you know, it really takes a village - you know"

I agree with your assessment. And because I feel the same way, we are not going to contribute money to any charity. Only clothes and soap to Goodwill, and food to our Church's relief fund.
