No Microsoft Patches This Month After All
PCWorld/ IDG News Service ^ | 9/9/2005 | Robert McMillan

Posted on 09/10/2005 2:35:32 PM PDT by Mike Bates

Microsoft has decided not to go ahead with its monthly security update after encountering an unspecified quality issue with the software patch it had planned to release next Tuesday.

Microsoft yesterday said it would be offering a patch to a critical flaw in its Windows operating system next week. Today, however, company representatives said that Microsoft had changed its mind and would not be releasing any security patches this month after all.

Microsoft releases most software patches on the second Tuesday of each month, a date that has come to be known as "Patch Tuesday" by security professionals. Little Explanation

The software vendor declined to say exactly what had caused the last-minute change in plans.

"It was a quality issue," said a Microsoft spokesperson. "They found something that made them realize that it was best not to release [the patch] this month," she said, adding that the company's security team decided it needed to put the Windows patch through additional testing.

This is the second time that Microsoft has changed its mind about releasing a patch since the company began giving customers advance notification of its monthly patches late last year, the spokeswoman said.

Well. last night I updated my WIndows XP OS and everything was great until I updated the audio driver (CMEdia AC97 Audio Device). Now, I get an error message 10 and have no sound card operational!

Thanks heaps, Bill!

Then, expand branch on your Hdwre >rt click >properties> >driver tab

& roll it back

Since when does Microsoft not release a product simply because it contains too many flaws? It never stopped them before!

You should avoid hardware driver updates from MS, many times they don't work with your specific piece of hardware. Things like modem & video hardware, can be altered by the manufacturer to fit/work a certain way with the PC maker setup. You should only use the MS driver upgrade, as an notification for change. Many times it is a driver change, needed for another MS patch being offered at the time. Go first to the PC manufacturers site, then go to the hardware makers' site for upgrades.

This one isn't exactly Microsoft's problem or fault. The issue here is that there are only a few manufacturers of certain chip types, and then you've got a bunch of other manufacturers who combine them in different ways. For instance, you might find 4 or 5 different implementations of AC97 audio chipsets on different cards or system boards. And these different implementations might well need different drivers. You need to be sure to use the drivers from the specific manufacturer. Microsoft only offers updated drivers to help out the users if a manufacturer is bad about getting drivers out to the users. This is the same for all sorts of other drivers as well, especially video drivers.

No kidding! I've gotten so tired of this crap. Look, there's NO SUCH THING as an OS or software package that doesn't need some amount of patching. I've been involved in applying patches to IBM 360 System OS, VMS and BSD 4.1 on Vaxen, OS/2, Novell NetWare, HP-UX, Ultrix, Linux, and of course Windows (starting with Lan Manager 2.0 and Windows 3.0) and a few others too!

The fact is, the more features that are added into any software package, the more complex it is, and the more difficult it will be to make sure that everything works under all circumstances. Regarding vulnerabilities, it's difficult or even impossible to know where they are until they've been discovered. Sort of not being able to see the forest for the trees.

----

Someone screwed up and didn't put in enough flaws.

They have to rework the fix to make it buggier.

Buggier. Is that a word?

Well, spell check says so.

Rumor has it (made up out of whole cloth just this moment) that Microsoft's beta testers could find nothing wrong in the patch destined to be released on Tuesday. Panicked Microsoft executives have pulled the patch seeking an explanation.

"Heads will roll over this!" exclaimed Vice President in Charge of Patches, George Brown. "And it won't be mine. Never in the history of Microsoft have we released anything that might theaten my job," explained Brown, reading over his contract.

Software engineers are being required to work overtime for the next two weeks seeking ways to include some bugs in the new patch.

HELP HELP HELP, PLEASE HELP . . .

Very frustrated trying to get MICROSOFT OFFICE 2000 WORD to list the most recent docs again.

Don't know why it stopped. When it opens, it carves out a portion of the screen like it's going to--then just obliterates that and opens a full blank screen. I HAVE RESET the recent docs thing to 9. I've reset it to 0 and closed and opened and then reset it to 9.

I've reinstalled it.

I have not REMOVED it and then reinstalled it--just did a repair reinstall.

any suggestions?

Thanks tons in advance.

Did you ever install Tweak UI? That's a common cause of that problem I understand. BTW, I am no authority on MS products nor do I even play one on TV. You may want to check out:
The "Most recently used" list is missing from the File menu
Good luck.

then, follow the advice in post # 10 & restore your sys to 9/8/05.
Start>acces>sys tools>syst restore

Then, return to Win updates & only get the critical ones
