Please sign the online petition to stop the killing of pets in New Orleans. Conflicting reports abound, regarding whether orders have been given to shoot abandoned pets. But just in case it is or becomes true, please sign the online petitions below to STOP the killing:

Some breeds are naturally "offish" to strangers but no starving dog can resist a bunch of food lying around..
My dogs don't even like strangers coming up to pet them while we're in PetsMart, never mind a flooded city with "mom and dad" gone.
They won't even take treats from strangers while I'm right there.
I spoke with my contact at the Oregon Humane Society just now:
UPDATE: The old Rottweiler OHS rescued is doing fine and was seen being taken for a gentle walk around the compound.
I was worried he would survive just long enough to die at the shelter, but it looks like he's getting a little better each day. But I am so happy to hear he is doing better 2 days after being rescued.
I mentioned live traps to her: She said the problem is the receiving shelters are overwhelmed and can't really take in any more animals. So they aren't ready to trap animals yet. Now they're focusing on feeding/watering in-place - in homes/yards, and at scattered feeding stations for the loose animals.
I suggested they put out the request for live traps NOW so that when they ARE ready to use them, they have them and don't have to wait yet another week for the traps to be shipped to them.
Good news and a good plan.....:)
*If* the animals are not in immediate physical danger, some of them may actually psychologically fare better by being fed at their homes.
Are they making any sort of database matching up houses where animals are found and the people who own the houses?
"DOG IN BOAT" has a happy ending -- the dog in the boat was rescued -- but yes, of course it's sad!

Not that I am aware of. That's an excellent idea. They're in frantic rescue mode right now. As you know, they're going out to specific addresses where owners have called in a request for rescue. Those owners have given instructions to either feed in place or rescue. When they encounter other animals not on their list, as in the 4 Rottweilers, they used to rescue them, but now that the shelters are virtually all full, they have to feed in place unless the animals are in dire circumstances. That's why they rescued the 4 Rotties rather than leaving them.
At the moment, they're not making efforts to find the humans that go with the animals, they're leaving it to the humans to find their animals. But they are making records of WHERE the animals came from that they rescue. So the 4 Rotties will have their house address recorded on their paperwork.
Perhaps eventually they'll try to backtrack the owners by their (former?) addresses. But right now, people are still having a hard time finding other people - no one knows where anyone is. So even if they did have a database with the owner's name based on the address, they wouldn't have any way to track down that owner... Where is he/she? In the Houston Astrodome? Shipped off to a shelter in Oklahoma? With family in New York? Who knows.
This disaster sure makes a good argument for:
a. crate-training your animals
b. microchipping your animals
c. carrying pictures of your animals in your wallet
And obviously the most important one: TAKE YOUR ANIMALS WITH YOU.

I swear I just posted a reply to this, but don't see it, so maybe I just closed the window rather than clicking "post"!!
Anyway: No, not at this time. Too busy rescuing. They record addresses where they rescue animals and that record stays with the animal. For OHS, their primary mission has been going to specific addresses where owners have called in a "please rescue" request. The owners say whether to rescue or feed-in-place.
When they find other animals, such as the 4 Rotties, they used to rescue them. Now that the shelters are almost all full, they feed in place unless the situation is dire. In the case of the Rotties, they determined it was dire (at least for the old guy), so they rescued him (them?).
At this time, they're leaving it to the owners to find their animals. People can't even find people right now, being dispersed to separate shelters, etc. Children are still separated from parents. So the animal shelters wouldn't have any way to FIND the humans right now even if they did have the database. But since they're recording house addresses, they could develop that in the future once the urgent need to rescue is passed. I'll pass that suggestion on to my contact.
Yes, thank God. Thank God she stayed in the boat! I wonder how long it had been since the spray paint had happened until the animal rescue people came along... an hour? Two days? And she stayed in the boat that whole time? Thank God is right.
Some of these rescued animals will make the BEST pets. They know when they've been saved from death, and they are forever grateful.
That skinny pup picture was taken on the 7th, only about a week after Katrina. So I think that was one of those that was half-starved BEFORE the disaster. Most people think my dogs are thin because you can see their ribs. But that's the way they're supposed to be. Most people have their dogs fat. Although I am constantly telling people to take the weight off their poor fat dogs, this is one time I wish everyone had their pets fat before the storm hit.
Most of the dogs they're still rescuing aren't nearly as skinny as that skinny pup, and it's been over 15 days. But the ones who were skinny, old, sick, or weak to begin with are starting to die. Very sad.
Skinny puppies just shouldn't be.....:(
My hounds are even thinner than yours and one of my girls is a *bit* tubby but she looks really weird when she's as thin as she's "supposed" to be.
She's a lot bigger overall than the average Ibizan so "beefy" is "normal" for her.
I do get sick of the "man....ya oughta feed them dogs" cracks though.
The skinniest "normal" dogs I ever saw were a Canaan dog and several Salukis.
I keep after my parents and their Chow.
He's not the usual "stocky" little thing...his belly hangs down like he's bloated or pregnant.
He's old and arthritic and I keep telling them they're doing his old bones no favors by allowing all that extra weight on them.

Most of my dogs over the years have been "11th hour" dogs and not a one of them ever forgot it.

I'm trying to fly down this weekend. It's not easy to line everything up all by myself though. I just haven't had any response from the sites where I signed up to volunteer. So I may have to strike out on my own to go rescue some animals.
