PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: After the President and First Lady attended church in Washington this morning, they participated in a September 11, 2001 rememberance and moment of silence on the White House lawn. GWB then headed for New Orleans where he touched down mid-afternoon. He will be spending the night aboard the USS Iwo Jima, which is docked in New Orleans harbor near downtown.

The President was met by New Orleans Mayor Nagin, but Gov. Kathleen Blanco was not present.

Patriot Day 2005 Proclamation

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Four years have passed since our country was brutally attacked on a quiet September morning. On that day, thousands of innocent lives were taken from us. The victims and the families who lost loved ones remain in the hearts and prayers of our Nation. We also remember the courage of the firefighters, police officers, emergency rescue personnel, and scores of private citizens who showed us the true meaning of heroism and demonstrated our resolve to the world.

The mission that began on September 11, 2001, continues. Today, we see the virtue of the September 11th heroes embodied in our military personnel, who are taking the fight to our enemies and helping to keep us safe at home. Thousands of other Americans, from intelligence analysts to border guards to countless others, are doing vital work to help defend America and prevent future attacks. We are grateful to all of these men and women and to their families for their service and sacrifice. We honor those who have lost their lives defending our freedom, and we pray that God comfort their families. We pledge that we will not rest until we have won the war on terror.

As we mark this solemn anniversary, I call upon all our citizens to express their patriotism and their gratitude for the blessings of liberty. By flying the flag, supporting military families, and teaching young people about our founding ideals, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and since, and we help preserve our freedom for future generations.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107 89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2005, as Patriot Day. I call upon the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half staff on Patriot Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, to display the flag at half staff from their homes on that day, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

The number of bodies is a fraction of what was predicted

Not to be cynical, but we need to brace ourselves. We are going to hear that if it was not for the heroics of state and local officials, the death toll would have been much higher.

It's Bush's fault when it goes bad, Blanco and Nagin's fault when it goes right. And to be honest...it looks more and more like the crisis was mostly a figment of MSM histrionics.

I thought that too, and it IS unusual for them to show that in public (other than when they're dancing!)but it was nice to see.

The mutual respect Bush has and gets for those close to him.

Got ahead of myself and didn't finish my sentence.

I meant that it shows in the faces of those close to the Pres. that there is great mutual respect.

I know I always feel lucky when I see him in it--LOL!"

May he have many such shirts in his collection. LOL!

Yeah - I still have fond memories of the scent of fresh milk and the warmth of the barn on a cold winter night.

Fresh from the cow milk is a delicacy nothing like the refrigerated, processed stuff they sell in the store.

I read that Powell was upset the President did not ask him back. He might have turned him down but he was upset he was not asked.

I thought you might like those pix! Do you remember that wonderful picture with the President and the rescue dog from Ground Zero - the President was holding the dogs paw like he was shaking his hand. I wish I could find it; I know I have a printed copy at home.

I was busy crying my eyes out last night when I was watching the news with a fellow who was reunited with his two dogs (chihuahuas) in NO. Whilst the human tragedy is horrific my heart aches so much for all the furry friends left behind.

Don't flame me please, not putting animals above humans.

You don't know me, of course, but I would be the LAST person on earth to flame you for caring about the animals left behind in this disaster. A few days ago, a particularly cruel individual was posting on a thread about the abandoned pets that the pets should be left behind. Animals must come last, yada, yada, yada. Had me in tears. Kept saying real Christians would not worry about the animals -- something to that effect.

Finally I reminded the dope about the story of Noah and the Ark. In that story, God told Noah to save not only his family, but the animals. The example of Noah's Ark says that it is entirely possible to save both humans and people simultaneously. The two are rarely mutually exclusive. In fact, God wanted Noah to do it, so I figure what's good enough for Noah is good enough for me.

I don't think the President is afraid of someone he can fire in an instance. Personally I don't think Rumsfeld is afraid of the President either. It's a mutural respect.

Nagin looks like a heartless idiot yukking it up considering his own city and people have just been devastated

Thanks for saying that. I knew something looked wrong with that picture. Nagin needs to be about his business and not trying to ingratiate himself w/GWB. Of course, taking care of NO must be pretty hard from Dallas, where he just bought a house.

Interesting. I haven't seen that.

But I think the reasons for Powell leaving are very clear. And while the press continues to try and spin what Powell says as being against the President, when I actually read what he says and not just the headline it seems to be aimed in a completely different direction.

Plus, I just saw something that talked about the two families getting together recently, so things are not bad on a personal level.

I have never really cared for Powell to be honest with you. But that is a policy thing, not a personality thing. He seems like a good guy.

Thank you, CAluvdubya. Please consider printing out the thread, or downloading the .zip file ThePythonicCow created for us. Then spread the news among your family, friends and acquaintences. I am urging everyone to help get the truth out, because I believe we in the grassroots can affect what the MSM reports if we push back hard.

Oh, I totally understand too!

If we had to choose between the two, the choice is clear. But now that people, for the most part, are out of danger...it would be irresponsible to not worry about the animals that are dependent on us for their well being.

Hi. I was watching the Flight 93 Movie so haven't been posting. Switched back to Fox from The Discovery Channel and there was Geraldo, getting ready to interview KRAUTHAMMER who, according to that oaf Geraldo, is THE expert on what happened.

I immediately switched to The Weather Channel. I am NOT listening to that garbage again!

Krauthammer is Kristolizing right before my eyes.

Do you have any cats? If so, did it take Ricky a while to get used to her/him (and vise versa)?
