Mary Landrieu: School Bus Failure Bush's Fault

Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005 10:27 p.m. EDT Mary Landrieu: School Bus Failure Bush's Fault

It was the Bush administration's fault that hundreds of city school buses weren't dispatched to evacuate the hurricane-battered residents of New Orleans two weeks ago before floods swamped the city, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu said Sunday.

Asked on "Fox News Sunday" why New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin failed to follow the city's evacuation plan and press the buses into service, Landrieu blamed Bush administration cuts in mass transit funding.

"Mayor Nagin and most mayors in this country have a hard time getting their people to work on a sunny day, let alone getting them out of the city in front of a hurricane," she said. "And it's because this administration and administrations before them do not understand the difficulties that mayors . . . face." Landrieu then added: "In other words, this administration did not believe in mass transit. They won't even get people to work on a sunny day, let alone getting them out."

Saying she was unwilling to criticize Louisiana officials, the Louisiana Democrat insisted that Mayor Nagin's evacuation efforts had been a smashing success.

"Because the mayor evacuated the city, we had the best evacuation . . . of any evacuation I've seen. I'm 50 years old; I've never seen one any better," Landrieu told FNS.

That prompted FNS host Chris Wallace to remind: "But there were a hundred thousand people left in the city."

Landrieu once again blamed the White House, saying:

"They did [have] a hundred thousand people left in the city because this federal government won't support cities to evacuate people, whether it's from earthquakes, tornadoes, or hurricanes. And that's the truth."

Court ordered desegragation (bussing) is still in effect. Since it is, that means that there is more than enough money to operate ALL of the school busses, that now sit under water, in NOLA. Cuts in mass transit is yet another BS excuse in an evergrowing list of BS excuses. Nagin's Navy sat idle, awaiting the flood waters that would render them useless. Nagin and Landrieu should be held on numerous counts of premeditated murder for knowingly avoiding the use of any and all measures to evacuate the citizens (read: voting base) of the two perps. I'm not holding my breath waiting for them to take the perp walk.

Every time a Louisiana Democrat opens his or her mouth, the total I.Q. of the Eastern United States drops a point and a half. If people hadn't died here, and if all Americans weren't going to be stuck with the bill, this would be the best comedy of the new season.

All too true John, and at this point I am alternately moved to guffaws of derision, and tears of despair at what our nation is becoming...

"Politicians have now become the lowest life form on earth ."

They couldn't have gotten there without their media enablers, so what does that make THEM?

What a darn shame. Jabbar Gibson doesn't even come up in
Google news and only a few blogs pull when he is put in a search engine.

Just horrible how the media has not lent him the more than 15 minutes of fame he has earned.

The problem w/ NOLA government is that there wasn't enough time to organize graft and bribes and kickbacks to insure that things actually worked. Rest assured, if there would've been money in it, the people would've had buses.

I'm beginning to think this might actually be the case.

Anyone who didn't realize Sen Lashlarue is an idiot before those asinine answers, surely know it now, unless they are idiots too.

I think she was surprised that he doggedly pursued REAL answers to his questions, particularly the one about the buses.

Quite ironic, isn't it? Here we have a state governor who refused to relinquish control because she wanted to protect her state's sovereignty...and now, because of her incompetence, we have a bunch of politicians who are going to want to give the feds even more power and responsibility. What's so sad is that this is already part of the problem; the more responsibilities the federal government assumes, the less responsible the state and people become. I can't imagine the other state governors are too happy with Miss Blanco and the mediacrats antics over this crisis.

There. That's better.
