Chavez land seizures slammed

SAN CARLOS, Venezuela -- State governors and the rural poor are moving quickly to implement President Hugo Chavez's vision of a social revolution, carving up and redistributing large landholdings and threatening to take over the premises of internationally owned companies. There has been none of the violence and mayhem that accompanied land seizures in Zimbabwe in recent years, but economists and angry land owners fear that -- as in Zimbabwe -- the takeovers will destroy a productive agriculture sector and undermine the economy. In the cowboy country state of Cojedes, however, triumphant farmworkers are hailing Mr. Chavez as a hero for pushing through legislation in 2002 that has enabled them to take over pieces of the region's sprawling family-owned ranches.

"I am preparing to plant sorghum, then I will sell it as cattle feed, pay off my costs, then reinvest the rest," he said.

and then he will be one of the "rich" and the government will do what to him? what goes around comes around.

And watch his crop go bad because he doesn't know what he is doing, or his market share dries up. Then he'll blame it on the "evil" land-owners or "rich" or "foreign devils". The fool is still a slave and doesn't know it. Don't deal with looter governments.

According to our Supreme Court, Venezuela has the same laws as the United States or Africa for that matter.

Only for middle class and upper middle class Republicans will have their homes and land confiscated. Solid Democraps Like Kennedy, Heinz-Kerry and their ilk will escape the seizure

Of course this won't work out over the long run. But by then his absolute power will be well cemented.

Who knows? Maybe in a few generations we'll be spilling American blood there to "free the people".

Cuba has done so well that Chavez wants to follow in Castro's footsteps.

Is it just a cruel joke from God that virtually everywhere in the world we have lots of oil we also have complete tyrrany?

You are right, and in America it is the tyranny of the left that is at fault.

In less than a decade we could develop US nuclear plants, clean burning coal fired plants, refineries, untapped oil and natural gad fields for complete energy Independence.

I believe you are being rhetorical, but I'll answer anyway. I think that the 'curse' is that it is an easily confiscated wealth, which can then be used to buy off the citizens, even they should own a fractional share.

I knew a Venezolana who told of her Aunt in Caracas. She took a taxi back
to her condo in a nice part of town. The driver said something to the effect
of 'Pr. Chavez says us poor will have these condos given to us. This is the one that I want.' I heard this story in 2002 and I thought this was likely a case of idle politician bloviating. Looks like he is following through with his threats.
