Investigators appointed by the Vatican have been instructed to review each of the 229 Roman Catholic seminaries in the United States for "evidence of homosexuality" and for faculty members who dissent from church teaching, according to a document prepared to guide the process. The Vatican document, given to The New York Times yesterday by a priest, surfaces as Catholics await a Vatican ruling on whether homosexuals should be barred from the priesthood.
In a possible indication of the ruling's contents, the American archbishop who is supervising the seminary review said last week that "anyone who has engaged in homosexual activity or has strong homosexual inclinations," should not be admitted to a seminary.
Edwin O'Brien, archbishop for the United States military, told The National Catholic Register that the restriction should apply even to those who have not been sexually active for a decade or more.
American seminaries are under Vatican review as a result of the sexual abuse scandal that swept the priesthood in 2002. Church officials in the United States and Rome agreed that they wanted to take a closer look at how seminary candidates were screened for admission, and whether they were being prepared for lives of chastity and celibacy.
The issue of gay seminarians and priests has been in the spotlight because a study commissioned by the church found last year that about 80 percent of the young people victimized by priests were boys.

why, are you a liberal?
i'm done. revel in your self-satisfied ignorance.
No need to get condescending simply because I disagree with you and the book. I grew up IN the Catholic schools. I was even an alter girl. I was not molested, nor do I know anyone who was. THAT is where I'm coming from.
altar girl. say no more. of course they weren't interested in you. the Arlington diocese, one of only two in the US, doesn't permit altar girls. you cannot disagree with a book you have not read.
your facts are what again?
thank you. i totally agree.
bump with no comment
later ping.
Precisely. This reminds me of the magician's 36-24-36-24 square-inches-of-clothing assistant taking a deep breath at the moment the magician swaps in the trick deck of cards.
homosexuals ARE a problme the problem in the priesthood. Priest abuse cases are VASTLY homosexual conduct upon children.
Homosexual Agenda Ping.
I like this new Pope, the more I hear about him the more I like him. Comment 31 has more links to articles about this.
It's pretty amazing that homosexual activists want homosexual priests and Boy Scout leaders in the face of all the problems in the Catholic Church. I guess they don't really see the priest/boy action as a problem; they must want more of the same.
It's clear that the molestations were not caused by anything inherent in the Catholic Church but by homosexuals who became priests, then Bishops, and then covered for each other. The sooner they each and every one get rooted out, the better for everyone - Catholic and non-Catholic alike. The Catholic Church has been a bulwark of morality and needs to continue.
Freepmail me AND DirtyHarryY2K if you want on/off this pinglist.
P.S. And seminiaries, cleared of the Lavender Mafia, will be welcoming to sincere men.
I've GOT to read that book.
Well said. Very well said.
"the pedophiles WERE homosexuals.
In the priesthood, the homosexuals ARE the pedophiles.
Homosexuals do not belong in the priesthood in ANY capacity."
Your penchant for the obvious unfortunately is not as obvious to others. It should be. Why anyone would want the fox guarding the chicken coop is beyond me. Homosexuals by nature like men, and that frequently includes young men and little boys. You don't know which homosexuals are going to seek out only men, as opposed to those that will seek out young boys too. There is no test for that.
Ok, so now the Catholic Church has to decide who should gain entry for priesthood in a seminary and who should not. How will it know which homosexuals who claim to not practice it, will end up later on molesting young boys? Have them sign a document professing that they will not? Yeah, that will do the trick. The whole church scandal of child molestation argues against that.
Homosexuality is a sexual compulsion as well as a lifestyle. It's not going to go away upon entry into a seminary. The seminary is merely a hideout for homosexuals, by allowing them to mask their homosexual inclinations, and it is also a fertile hunting ground for those with predatory tendencies. Of course, you don't know which of the homosexuals let into the seminary are going to be more passive, and which will be aggressive. Therefore, is it not logical, for a church already so damaged in reputation over these matters, to make it a policy to not let homosexuals into the priesthood at all? In fact, this is the only way the church can protect itself from that which will otherwise be an ongoing problem, with its attendent lawsuits, and loss of monies better spent on the church's mission of spreading the good word and doing charitable deeds.
All homosexuals shoul be routed out and banned from the priesthood. Homosexuality is by nature a deviancy. Man was not physically made to mate with another man, it is biblically denounced, and it is against the laws of nature, no matter how many attempts to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear are made. It is what it is, a 1-3% deviancy from the norm.
Yes, there are problems with heterosexual predators within the Catholic priesthood too, but there is no numerical nor moral equivalence to the problems caused by homosexuality. The vast majority of "incidents" in the Catholic church are caused by homosexuals, not heterosexual priests. And although philandering priests having heterosexual relationships is not a good thing, it at least is not against the laws of nature. Let's face it, the problems in the church have primarily been caused by homosexual priests molesting young boys. The whole concept of allowing homosexual priests into the seminaries "just as long as they don't practice their homosexuality" is repugnant to me, and a cop-out. Pope Benedict XVI understands this, and I knew the minute he became Pope that things would start to change, that he would take the bull by the horns, and clean up the infestation within seminaries in the U.S. Go Pope B! You are everything I was hoping for and more.
Will they be using gay-dar?
Getting rid of an old tagline that was a tongue in cheek comment made to poster on another thread. Time for a new tagline.
