BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard acting on Colombian intelligence intercepted a submarine-like vessel in the Pacific ocean carrying more than 2 tons of cocaine, Colombia's anti-narcotics police said Thursday.
The cocaine was seized Wednesday aboard "a type of submarine vessel" sailing off the coast of the Ecuadorean-owned Galapagos Islands, Gen. Alberto Gomez, the anti-narcotics police chief, told local RCN radio.
He said further details were not immediately available.
Separately, 2.5 tons of cocaine were discovered Wednesday hidden in the oil tanks of a ship docked in the Colombian Pacific port of Buenaventura, Adm. Jairo Pena, commander of Colombia's Pacific fleet, said in a statement. Eight suspects were arrested.
He said the cocaine was likely going to be taken to Central America from where it would be shipped on to the United States.
Colombian authorities have caught drug traffickers using subs on several occasions. They are usually small, fiberglass vessels that travel just below the surface. But in 2000, police on a raid of a warehouse near Bogota were stunned to find a 100-foot-long (30.5-meter-long) steel submarine being built to transport up to 150 tons of cocaine.
Colombia is the world's biggest produce of cocaine and a major supplier of heroin to the United States. The Colombian navy has this year seized a record 46 tons of cocaine.

It was about 5 years ago.
Those pesky criminals are getting sneaky with a "submarine-like" vehicle to transport their product.
Hey, I was there back about 1967.
The Colombian navy has this year seized a record 46 tons of cocaine.
What's wrong with this picture? Can you say drop in the bucket?
Interdiction as a means of eliminating illegal drugs is a boatload of cr@p.
*sigh*, you know what I mean. I hope.
No diving capability? if so, "submarine like" might not be a totally inaccurate description. I'm guessing it's a crude device that has to take on air from above the surface, either by air tubes or by surfacing above the water at needed intervals.
Nagin would bring in his police force for the "show" and they could all be taken below deck for "entertainment' while Nagin is topside telling reporters how he has personally arranged for the shipment and saved his city all while Bush could care less.
In response to the reduction in cocaine supply, a Democrat congressman has introduced legislation to prevent coke dealers from price gouging customers...
During a question-and-answer session, the Congressman was asked if he believed the suppliers were doing all that they could to help their customers.
"I don't believe a word of it!" he snorted.
Cheers!

So was the Hunley.
Pretty neat stuff. I had no idea you could buy anything like that.
Probably trying to escape radar detection. Put only non-conductive parts above water.
Wild site.
Yes it is...run by a bunch of lefty kids, but I swear some of their stuff is VERY funny. Page Six.com (NY Post) and Gawker.com are my two web "vices" - gotta read both daily ;)
