Tropical depression prompts storm warnings: Philippe develops

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Philippe formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday, while a new tropical depression developed closer to land and prompted storm warnings in the Bahamas, forecasters said.

The latest depression developed east of the Turks and Caicos Islands late Saturday. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said interests in the southern Florida peninsula, the Florida Keys and central and western Cuba should closely monitor the progress of the storm, which was expected to strengthen.

At 11 p.m. EDT, the depression had sustained winds of about 30 mph and was located about 95 miles east of Grand Turk Island in the southwestern Bahamas. It was moving to the west-northwest near 10 mph, and it was expected to continue on that course for the next 24 hours.

The government of the Bahamas issued a tropical storm warning for the Turks and Caicos and for the southeast and central Bahamas. A hurricane watch also was issued for the northwest Bahamas.

Tropical systems get a name when they have winds above 39 mph. The depression would be named Tropical Storm Rita if it strengthens into the 17th named storm of the season.

Meanwhile, Philippe formed late Saturday from a depression that developed well east of the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic. At 11 p.m. EDT, Philippe had maximum sustained winds near 40 mph and was located about 295 miles east-northeast of Barbados. It was moving to the north-northwest near 5 mph.

AP came close to getting it correct.

The TWO update also mentions the liklihood of yet another strong wave south of Cape Verde having potential for development!

Wrong.

Tropical Depression Ten never was named.

Rita would indeed be the 17th named storm of the year.

Um.. usually (blush) Wonder why Philippe, right on the heels of 18 is heading off in such a different direction. Well, good grief, after watching Ophelia's path, anything is possible. Let's hope they miss LA and MS.

Accuweather thinks a Texas hit late in the week; looks like they and the NHC agree on a Keys hit Monday-Tuesday -- possibly as a Cat 1-2 hurricane.

I'm not too fond of it either. I have lifelong friends in San Benito.

Channel 7 always revs things up as soon as the storm comes off Africa. They are a joke.

It's TRUE. President Bush and Karl Rove are flying around in the U2 that President Bush Sr. used to fly a birthday cake to the Ayatollah Khomeini. They were seen throwing out that silver iodide stuff to seed the hurricane and make head back to New Orleans. I heard some guy say it, so it must be true! Paging Minister Farrakhan!
