More women are asking for prenups
Sun Sentinel ^ | September 18, 2005 | Georgia East

Over a casual dinner, Rachel Kaplan turned to her boyfriend and asked, "You're open for a prenup, right?"

Darren Waldohlz, 38, a partner in a successful speed-dating business, admits he was caught off guard. But he said he realized a prenuptial agreement would protect the house he owns, too.

"It's not that I plan to get divorced," says Kaplan, 23, a single mom from Fort Lauderdale, who has a sizable inheritance. "I have to protect myself and my daughter."

While men are still more likely to seek a prenup, "women are becoming a more dominant force," said attorney Alan Braverman, who has offices in Fort Lauderdale and Boynton Beach.

Experts attribute the change to women marrying later or more than once.

"It's not uncommon in today's world that women are entering marriages with assets and stock options," said matrimonial attorney Jacqueline Valdespino, in Coral Gables. "Now both sides have equal bargaining power."

re: Career women

I'm with you. As I have said to many wide-eyed women in my life, women now have more freedom and choice when it comes to career, home, and other related choices. They usually are smiling ear-to-ear at that!

BUT, of course, at the same time men have more freedom and choice when it comes to career, home, and other related choices. That part usually takes the smile off their faces.

It's a self-centered mentality, really: many women think they can change the variables on their side of the equation, and not change the variables comperablyon the other side of the equation. Frankly, they must be smoking crack to genuinely believe that: it makes no sense and it is fundamentally unfair.

They get the careers they want. Men get the mates they want. Everyone is happy, right?

If you are worth ANYTHING of significance and plan to get married, you absolutely have to have a prenup... unless you like watching lawyers get rich by extending the misery of an already miserable situation.

Do you believe that the ONLY reason for marriage is to produce children?

The reason for state sponsored marriage is to give guarantees to all involved.

It ensures the woman that her husband will be legally obligated to care for her and her children.

But since some here think women no longer need be cared for and protected by men, that negates one reason to have marriage.

And since some here think DNA testing can assign responsibility, that negates another reason to have marriage.

Legal marriage also served to protect men from accusations of rape.

But since we have created a crime of rape within marriage, whe have negated that reason for marriage.

Marriage also helps to decide who inherits what, but we have wills to perform that function.

So you tell me why we should continue to get married?

According to your liberalized and sexual-revoltuionized beliefs, there are no practical reasons for the state to sponsor marriage any longer.

Don't bother with him, even other he-man wimmin-haters have to know he's an idjit.

I'm glad I know that not all guys on FR are paleolithic haters. Some of them even respect women. Heck, they might not sleep with a woman before offering her commitment!

re: Do only women have baggage.

No, of course not. But men are primarily concerned with the baggage on their potential mates. Women may or may not have concern with baggage on their potential mates.

Basically, I'm only concerned with women's emotional baggage because that's what I have to deal with.

But I think all traits...Like virtue, integrity, honor, honesty, self-sacrifice are greatly lacking into many people today. And it isn't just gender specific.

I agree, but it's my experience that women are suffering more here than men lately

WHY IS OKAY FOR MEN TO BE RAKES AND CADS PRIOR TO MARRYING, BUT WOMEN MUST REMAIN VIRGIN, OR NEVER MARRY?

Rakes? Cads?

I fear your unconcious bias is intefering with your objectivity.

No fear, I'd never settle for a cad. ;-)

Between my FR friends and my dad-and-bothers, I don't need to worry about accidentally marrying one either.

Actually, not so.

Beyond a certain age when her biological clock is running out of time, it would be unrealistic to expect someone to marry her.

And so she might become someone's paid mistress, for example.

Oh yes, I'm paranoid. When I'm going head to head with a man who has a rough time keeping the ladies at bay, I'm not interested in becoming your next victim.

I'm not sure why your relating a discussion of gender roles to my "prowess". What has that got to do with the argument? And making me seem like a predator only reinforces my assumption that you have many issues.

Your ego has been fed and you are free to move on thinking you know it all. Have a good day sir.

You ain't getting away that easy sister, back up your statements

I know... but don't settle for a good liar either.

Honestly, the thing that freaks me out about these twits, is that they know better than to ~say~ any of this to women in real life. They'd never make it through dinner. No, this garbage is the hidden monster they only share with the grace of anonymity.

One hopes that you are merely drunk, and therefore spouting off. Were you actually sober, I'd feel really sorry for anyone that has bothered to care about you.

You maybe don't know as many hopelessly pathetic twerps as I've encountered recently? Because I can see a few of them saying things like this and then wondering why they never get a second date.

Heck, I could see that creep who was following me around all summer acting like AoR. He'll never get an actual date with an actual woman either.
