Text messaging will work?

I read on one of the Katrina threads that yes, when the regular cells went down, people were text messaging and it DID work. Go feeger.

It's amazing to me how people still don't take these seriously. Yep, it was in the Keys, they interviewed some people at a nice trailer park & the one lady said "if it gets bad, I might leave"!!! HELLO! If it gets bad, it'll be too late to leave!

I live in the midwest, am not particularly afraid of storms, but after being hit with a tornado about 20 years ago & my sons house about 12 years ago, it made me a believer, when the sirens go off & the warnings are out, I'm heading for the basement with my dogs!

Even here in the midwest, the trailers usually are the first to go in a tornado. No accounting for peoples lack of common sense, I guess!!!

I found this:

Latest National Hurricane Center Update on Katrina for August 29, 2005: At 10 a.m. CDT the center of Hurricane Katrina moved ashore near the Louisiana-Mississippi border. The center of Hurricane Katrina was located near the mouth of the Pearl River about 35 miles east-northeast of New Orleans, Louisiana and about 45 miles west-southwest of Biloxi, Mississippi. Katrina is moving toward the north near 16 mph, and maximum sustained winds are near 125 mph, with higher gusts. Katrina is now a Category Three hurricane

What am I missing here?

Thanks, DouglasKC! My brother bought a generator for Y2K but never used it; I'll make sure to pass along the info.

I am all packed up and ready to head out in the morning.

My husband refuses to go.

I don't know how much of a house, or a husband, I will have left when this is all said and done.

Please pray for us, and all who are in her path.

I retired from TI on SW Freeway in Stafford.

I applied for a job at TI years ago and didn't get it. I ended up going to Bechtel. It is a small world and getting smaller each day;)

You are absolutely correct. I have always kept an old land-line phone (keep it in the bedroom extension). Can't tell you how many times I've had to use this year due to T-storms (and I live in western NY)!! Power outages have been incredible up here this year.

I guess the guys at the NHC/TPC don't understand straight line winds either. I've heard something like it argued before, by some engineers IIRC, that the winds in Andrew were only 80 kts., too. Been awhile since I heard anyone trying to say it though. Some of the anemometer readings, before they blew away do a good job of refuting that.

That's fine, you go right ahead and rely on irrefutable evidence - rolleyes - such as the History Channel, ROFLMAO.

I prefer fairy tale

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
